BBC presenter/journalist. Three lovely daughters. Fantastic wife.
@DurhamCricket
commentator for
@BBCNewcastle
20+ years. Cycling fan. Footy. NE England.
Nine years ago today
@BunnyOnions
was told he wasn't needed by England. So he jumped in his car and drove to Notts to play for
@DurhamCricket
. Then, without lunch or tea he took all 10 wickets - including a run out. What a response!
That's been a great day of T20. Imagine if the tournament had the unbelievable amount of marketing money thrown at it like the franchise tournament did?
Wasn't broken. Didn't need fixing. Just marketing.
Cricket. I need cricket. I miss the sounds and the smells. I miss the punters and I miss the craic. I miss the silly way county championship matches are seemingly over in the first hour and won in the final session on day 4.
And above all I miss our radio family of cricket fans.
Family of extremely talented Sunderland photographer
@Dean_Matthews_
on BBC News at 10.
One of the 100,000. He went into hospital with an annoying "tickly cough" and never came home. He was 42! He had five children and a wife.
He took pictures like this. It's where we live.
Durham were relegated by the ECB in 2016 because of debts the ECB had a big part in creating, through their plan to have Test stadia upgraded, while asking clubs to bid silly amounts of money to host said Tests. A scheme since ditched!
I would like to thank everyone for all of the exceptional support this year on the cricket commentaries. The messages and the emails make it what it is. Couldn't do it without you.
Bizarre decision in a paper to use a picture of a stand closed for safety reasons to try and highlight and lack of interest in county cricket. There were 1400 spectators here yesterday and there's massive interest in our commentaries, for instance.
I understand Scott Borthwick has agreed a five-year deal to return to
@DurhamCricket
as the club looks to bring back some of its "lost generation".
He joined Surrey with Mark Stoneman at the end of 2016 as Durham hit financial troubles.
Great news for the club.
#bbccricket
There was a poignant moment at
@DurhamCricket
today when skipper Paul Collingwood shook hands with each player before the game.
Official line, even last night, was discussions are ongoing over his future, but I understand he is about to call it a day at 42.
#bbccricket
Gareth Batty, the Surrey coach, said last week nobody has spoken to him as part of the ECB review in county cricket. Other coaches appeared to be in the dark too.
Nobody asked the commentators for their thoughts, even though we watch county cricket for six months of the year.
This is everything I said in 2016 and since.
The 100 also played a massive part. The ECB had a problem. They had nine test venues and only eight franchises.
I am sick of people saying "move on" because what happened was an utter disgrace and out of all proportion.
If you want a successful Test team you need two equal divisions with promotion and relegation. Everyone plays each other twice.
It worked. It got England to world no 1. Then they started messing about with it. And allowed players to go overseas with no benefit at all to England.
Incredible. Air ambulance lands on the ground in the first over of
@Gloscricket
v
@DurhamCricket
#BBCCricket
Appears to be a medical emergency in the ground. Players have left the field.
Congratulations to the
@DurhamCricket
fast bowler Matty Potts who has been named in the side to play NZ in the first test tomorrow. It's his first cap. Go well Matty lad.
#BBCCricket
With the
@DurhamCricket
season done and dusted I would like to thank you all for being there again this year and making the BBC commentaries the wonderful thing they are.
Couldn't do it without your support and interaction.
Winter well people.
#BBCCricket
Those of you sad the test series is over and missing
@bbctms
today, can I suggest you tune in to the BBC's excellent commentary teams covering
@CountyChamp
matches? There are still three weeks of the cricket season to go including some excellent games this week free on
@BBCSport
Fully understand resentment about
@DurhamCricket
relegation in 2016. But the people who took that decision at the ECB have all moved on.
None of them are there anymore.
Today should be about celebration.
I am shaking. I think I am going to have a heart attack. Have you ever seen anything like that in your life?
@englandcricket
World Cup winners.
@MAWood33
and
@benstokes38
of Durham WORLD CUP WINNERS.
What absolute drama.
Ooh that league table looks good.
@DurhamCricket
were the only team to win in Div 2 this week and the lead jumped from 36 points, ahead of this round of games, to 47 after it!
Dean Jones scored more than 2,000 runs in all formats for
@DurhamCricket
in 1992 their first year in the big time.
He was part of something truly massive in terms of North East sport.
10 years ago came the terrible news Ian Laws had left us.
A great writer and friend. We met at journalism college and then spent years travelling together watching Sunderland. First as fans, then reporters.
Taken far too soon. Not a days goes by where I don't think of him.
Can't wait for all these TV betting ads to be severely curtailed. Or banned. Not long now. "if the fun stops, stop". What a load. I don't bet but for those who have a problem there is no escape in this country. So wrong. And I don't want it blasted at my kids either.
To see Yorkshire docked points in a championship season where they are going nowhere - and in a T20 competition which they didn't get through anyway - is unbelievable.
Many people in the NE are understandably, once again, asking why Durham were made such an extreme example of?
Some great news from
@BBCSport
which has extended its commentary deal with the ECB until the end of 2028.
The deal ensures live coverage of England home games and county cricket, as well as coverage on the BBC website.
#BBCCricket
Bob Willis was a hero when I was a kid. Who can forget his demolition of Australia in 1981?
Many copied his style.
Although he spent the majority of his life in the south of England, he was actually born in Sunderland!
I think there may have been family links to the Boro too.
We have people at every game but nobody approached us.
Yet strangely those in the media who watch little to no county cricket at all each year are the ones with the loudest voices. You don't see them at grounds either. It's a really strange situation that.
The
@DurhamCricket
trophy presentation - firstly in front of the fans - and then with them in the team pick.
@CountyChamp
Division Two winners 2023.
Durham are back.
#bbccricket
Can't remember the last time England won a test series three nil, especially against one of the better Test playing nations.
Anyway, well done lads.
I blame the county championship.
Great win for
@DurhamCricket
as they beat
@WarwickshireCCC
by an innings and 127 runs.
Rushworth claims the last wicket as Hannon-Dalby is caught at 2nd slip by Borthwick on 8.
It's their first win in 11 attempts and they go second in group one!

11 years ago today.
"Graham Onions was told he wasn't wanted by England so he drove to Notts to play for Durham. Then, without lunch or tea, he took all 10 wickets - including a run out. What a response to the England selectors."
The secret is out. Former Blur frontman Damon Albarn is to play a number of intimate gigs in Tynemouth and Cullercoats later this month with his current band The Good, The Bad and The Queen.
They will play two nights at
@CullercoatsCrescentClub
and one at Tynemouth CIU.
9 years since George Summerside, Sunderland, Durham and England fan left us.
England cricketers paused while the
@TheBarmyArmy
played the Last Post against Pakistan, in Dubai, on the day of his funeral back in Roker.
That many turned up 100s couldn't get into the church.
First signs of autumn in Chester-le-Street as the leaves begin to fall and another season with
@DurhamCricket
comes to an end.
Thanks for all the messages, emails a tweets again this season. And thanks for being there. Winter well, as they say.
#bbccricket
Sadly I won't be at
@SussexCCC
this week for the
@DurhamCricket
match, which means I will miss my first championship game since my daughter was born seven years ago.
It follows an accident on Sunday which left me in hospital with a fractured eye socket/jaw.
Wowzers.
@DurhamCricket
finish on 405-4. It's the 15th best one day total in this country and the first time they have reached 400.
Bancroft 61*, Bedingham 67, Lees 100 and Clark a career-best 141.
It is the highest score against
@KentCricket
by anyone too.
#bbccricket
25 years ago today this young lad joined BBC Radio Newcastle.
Back in those days it was the early shift on the Ceefax desk.
Five years of Sunderland commentaries followed. 24 seasons covering
@DurhamCricket
Drivetime. Total Sport. And sports presenting on radios 4 and 5.
If only people knew about this new-fangled short form of cricket called the T20.
(We played it a club level for decades.)
But without millions to publicise it I can't see anyone turning up to see it. Not when balls are bowled in collections of six instead of the traditional five!
Sad to say this tonight. RIP Nana Borthwick.
What a lovely lady. I doubt there's a cricketer in the North East she hasn't fed.
And the BBC commentary team would back me up on this too. She looked after us so well.
My thoughts with the family. What a week for NE cricket.
That's that.
@DurhamCricket
bowl
@leicsccc
out to win by an innings and 141 runs. They take 233 points from the season. Their third best haul in the
@CountyChamp
They finish with seven wins from 14. An outstanding season.

SOME of the
@BBCSport
cricket commentators, producers and web teams who bring you county cricket each year.
Not everybody could make it to this year's
@CricketMediaUK
annual lunch. It has been held later in the year because of the World Cup.
And
@kevinhowells100
won an award.
At the World Cup final Wood, Plunkett, Stokes, Latham and Nicholls all came through the
@DurhamCricket
Academy.
Just showing the importance of what this club means to cricket on the global stage.

Been lovely to see so many
@DurhamCricket
fans in Worcester this week. Have met up with so many lovely and familiar faces. I hope everybody enjoyed today?
This week has been a NE takeover.
Off to bed now. A wrong has been well and truly righted this season. 7 years later.
DURHAM WIN BY SEVEN WICKETS.
MATTY POTTS TAKES A CAREER-BEST 7-40.
He bowled Michael Hogan first ball.
They win by 58 runs after
@GlamCricket
are given 5 penalty runs for dissent.
@DurhamCricket
first win of the season.
#bbccricket
You beauty, a record 528 First Class wickets for
@ChrisRush22
for
@DurhamCricket
as Haynes is caught in the slips on 24 by Bedingham.
Well done that man. What a servant to the club.
#bbccricket
Thanks for all the messages today.
The big 5 0 and our 20th wedding anniversary.
Can't thank my beautiful wife enough for all she does for us. My TV and mummy star. And gorgeous too.
And three daughties who make us proud. All doing cricket training at
@WhitburnCC
too.
Switched the cricket off. The gambling ads are too much. It is a never ending onslaught and I am paying for the privilege of witnessing it. I have had enough.
Warwicks and Kent take the final quarter final positions.
That's the end of the
@DurhamCricket
season.
Thanks for listening in these challenging times.
Stay safe. Winter well and let's hope we get a full season in next year.
Can't blame them at all, if it was their decision. Competition has been demeaned in the last two years.
I would like to thank them for all of the years of support of one day cricket in this country. Superb job.
They were also docked 48 points the following year, which made any hopes of promotion nigh on impossible. Plus points in both white ball competitions.
They were stripped of Test status too. 8 Test venues were left and coincidentally became the 8 homes for the 100 franchises.
They've gone home now but the
@Worcs_Cricket
groundstaff were still out there at 8.15pm.
These teams across the country are the unsung heroes of the
@CountyChamp
and work all hours. They deserve massive credit for the work they do.
#bbccricket
A true leader. Record
@DurhamCricket
run scorer. Record century scorer. Only
@englandcricket
captain to lift a world cup. Captain Colly. I would imagine a great career in coaching will follow. And what a miss he'll be.
It was an emotional day for the players yesterday.
#Talisman
Cracking win for
@DurhamCricket
who beat
@Gloscricket
for the first time on this ground. Their previous home win was at Gateshead Fell in 1994.
They open a 54-point gap at the top of Division Two.
Margin nine wickets!
#BBCCricket
Wowzeroonies. What a special day for
@DurhamCricket
today.
@CountyChamp
title winners in division two and with a game to go.
Massive congratulations to the players and staff.
