I’m constantly amazed by the dedication of Ukraine’s arts community. On Sunday I was at Kyiv Opera’s first performance of La Boheme since Russia’s invasion. It was delayed by an air raid, and interrupted by another - but nothing could stop Rodolfo and Mimi falling in love.

In 🇬🇧 we have Nativity plays, in 🇺🇦 it’s ‘vertep’ or ‘szopka’. Here the stage is set at St Sophia’s, Kyiv with the stars, goats and ‘didukh’ - a wheatsheaf representing the spirit of the ancestors, to wish everyone health and good harvests in the New Year.

I attended a great performance of Tosca at the Kyiv Opera tonight, with Oksana Kramareva in the title role. It was both difficult and moving to see the depictions of torture and sexual violence in Act Two, in a country that has seen such horrors at the hands of Russian occupiers.
