The case of South Africa v Israel before the International Court of Justice (

Very happy to share that at the end of a sometimes long & challenging (certainly not boring) I have been promoted to full Professor at
@UOW
.
It takes a village to raise an academic & I'm grateful for the many people who helped along the way both within & outside of UOW.
Very excited (and relieved!) to see final proofs of the TBT & SPS volume of the Commentaries on World Trade Law. Many thanks to authors, editors,
@BrillPublishing
staff & the many student assistants in Goettingen elsewhere for bringing this volume (almost) to fruition.
Honored to have trained a new generation of
#trade
lawyers & economists from many African countries at
@trapca_esami
again this year. Wonderful and very engaged students who will hopefully have a chance to make a difference in African and global trade governance.
#WTO
New article "The Impending Demise of the WTO Appellate Body: From Centrepiece to Historical Relic?" explains how/why the
#WTO
AB became a central player in international economic governance and is now in danger of becoming "foam on the waves of history".
Honored to have been elected as Executive Vice-President of the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL)
@sielnet
and to working with
@pengshinyi
& the SIEL Executive Council and our members.
The legal dust before the
@CIJ_ICJ
has settled, at least until the Court comes back to deliver its decision on the provisional measures
#SouthAfrica
has requested in the genocide case against
#Israel
.
That won't be for a few weeks.

Talks on the war in

It's a great pleasure to announce that the 2023 SIEL Global Biennial Conference will take place in Bogota in mid-July. The theme is IEL in time of Geo-Political Confrontation & Geo-Economic Fragmentation. Time to book tickets ... and submit paper, panel or poster proposal!
And with this the last tab on
#SIEL2021
closes. It was a fun ride to organize not one but two conferences: SIEL 2020 fell victim to
#COVID19
and SIEL 2021 was the first virtual conference
@sielnet
organized.
Our 3rd SIEL Conversation is underway!

I cribbed from

and asked
#ChatGPT
what's wrong with the
#WTO
in Shakespearean sonnet format
Oh, WTO, thou seem'st a noble cause,
Yet troubles doth thou bring upon thy way,
Forsooth, thou art not free from flawed laws,
And oft doth thou provoke a world of fray.
I asked ChatGPT to tell me what is wrong with ISDS in Shakespearean English. This is what I got:
Hark! What foul a practice hath been wrought,
A system fraught with faults and evils sought.
ISDS, a creature born of greed and power,
That renders justice weak and frail each hour.

One Appellate Body (the
#WTO
one) is inoperable (due to somwhat inscritable US objections). Another, in the
#AfCFTA
context, has just started to see the light of day. This is a positive development should the AfCFTA AB be allowed to be impartial and independent.
The public swearing-in ceremony of the Appellate Body Members, held yesterday in

before the
#AfCFTA
Dispute Settlement Body, is a milestone in the establishment of a rules-based

This: one of the most eloquent & sobering defenses of the
#EuropeanUnion
. But it also shows why
#Brexit
happened: many on the Continent understand the EU as a constitutional project and not - as the large majority in the UK do - merely a transactional one.
Yesterday I had to teach my students, in under 3 hours, what the EU was and why
#Brexit
was happening. It seemed like an impossible task. Then I found this MEP had done it in 2 minutes.
This is very important. Please watch and RT.
