It was founded by St. Helena (Constantine l mother) 327–329 AD. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the world.

In Ancient Greece, they were cooking a flat round bread called πλακούς (plakous) which means “flat”. They topping it with olive oil, cheese, herbs, onion, garlic and then baked it in a mud oven. Romans used this as basis for the dish called pizza 🍕.
