All the ESRI rules I've learned since college are going out the window with QGIS. This software is fucking powerful. Adding fields on a joined table and updating both datasets in an edit session - no problem. Dangerous, but what I've been looking for for years. I ♥️ QGIS.
what do you do with 3 million dollar datasets? i share them freely. ladies and gentlemen - i would like to introduce you to the most detailed dataset the world has ever seen for Bangladesh.
Google building footprints (3.2 GB) for Morocco disaster relief.
I emailed them, asking for data and they plop it out freely - no questions. This is how the modern day, leaders in gis, handle data requests for disaster relief.
Ten years ago I started my blog with the goal of sharing the world's most difficult to find and best GIS data. What a way to celebrate ten years. Ghana census data. Enjoy.
Saturday night, mapping Liberia. Mapping every village, settlement, town and city in the world. Been working on this project almost every day since September 1, 2020!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arcpro feature to line: 2 hours
QGIS feature to line: 9 seconds
both came from same exact feature class in same exact fgdb.

DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE SOFTWARE THAT DOES NOT WORK
ESRI is honestly an OPEN data killer. If you don't pay them your services and data die. Statistical agencies and any other government hoping to share data should expect a long expensive ride. AVOID HAVING YOUR OPEN DATA PORTAL BE AN ESRI SERVICE.
Slovenia has one of the best and easiest to use geoportals in the EU. Easy to download. Clear metadata. Clear terms of use. Bonus: They have it translated to English so you don't have to decipher a google translate version 🤓
If your government used ESRI for COVID monitoring maps and stopped paying them, your maps and data are dead and useless. ESRI gives 0 fucks about fixing any problems unless they are paid first. Do not use ESRI for anything 'open data' because it isn't free, open, or sustainable.
the most important thing in gis, that i tell everyone: if you see a file you think you might need someday ~ DOWNLOAD IT AND BACK IT UP. So many governments upload data, then delete it or can't pay E$RI. I'd bet a six pack of beer majority of covid sites are gone becau$e E$RI fee$
at the library - guy walks in 'I need to georefernce these maps to build a parcel dataset' ~ in his 70s. 'I got arcmap and qgis' ~ I walk up 'Sir, I am your man'. Librarian looks at us... Wild.
if you ever see this on linkedin - they are 100% full of shit. I've been doing this shit for 15 years and learn something new every day. And... data changes daily. Fun rant started.
holy fuck.
@qgis
just merged all these rasters in less than a minute.
@Esri
arcmap is still thinking about the mosaic process, but... yeah - QGIS is the way to go if you want to get work done.

An amazing time for India with amazing data!
I built this thing called GID. If you like it, share fun things you've derived. If you love it, hire me to build more cool stuff. This took me four days. You should see what I can build in four weeks. Enjoy!
One of the most amazing gis experiences in my past 15 years. Talking shop with the main gis guy in Baxter County, AR. So nice, smart, funny, great stories. I live for this. SO MANY MAPS. And arcmap is the main software!!!!!
It took me 13 years to hit 300k. So when I said I would do an additional 200k for 2023 I thought I was crazy. Well, here we are. 500,000 OSM updates with 0 imports in 230 countries. I think this is pretty dope.
in over 13 years of sharing data - today I was formally asked by a government to delete data. because it is putting people's lives in jeopardy.
so i did.
data is a wild critter that can ruin lives. i try to share it to help people.
esri people dont like questions. more koolaid. more colorful posts about everything is good. GIS IS DIRTY. GIS IS HARD. GIS IS THERE TO FIX PROBLEMS, NOT PUT PEOPLE IN NEW CHALLENGES THROUGH LICENSING ISSUES AND EXPENSIVE DATA HOSTING PLATFORMS.
im starting to find out all these city governments that are 'ESRI award winner's' actually have shit maps,shit data portals, and 404s everywhere for maps. This must just be an award for who ponied up the must cash to some sales guy award?

I love talking to GIS people who are passionate about their craft and what they dev. I love it. So glad I was let go. I needed this. Excited to build with others who care.
osm hack (**this might piss you off**) if you ever come across a bunch of horrible buildings in osm, just delete them. save. two seconds later - WAY BETTER RAPID BUILDINGS. I know I know - there werent any attributes. The craft mapper here was drunk. I fixed it. BYE
