How blessed we are that his odd but mesmerising face, his crazy eyes, his strange, deep voice, his lanky body, and his surprising talent were ever put to use in cinema.
After his 1st film audition, the writer and producer called Donald Sutherland to tell him he didn't get the part. The role was for "a guy next door sort of guy," they told him. “And to be absolutely truthful, we don't think you look like you ever lived next door to anybody.”

For @guardian, I wrote about the state of film criticism today, as influencers have better access to press screenings than, well, the press, & how the devaluation of criticism is related to the devaluation of cinema by streamers.

It's easy (and logical) to get cynical about these award ceremonies but moments like this one are just too beautiful.

I was so looking forward to PAST LIVES but found it annoyingly thin and uncomplicated - this piece explains and contextualises this really well
For @ArtReview_ I wrote a dissenting opinion on Past Lives, a film so insistent on making its characters relatable, decent and sympathetic that it forgets to make them into real people

THE SUBSTANCE is the best thing I’ve seen at #Cannes2024 so far - Hollywood’s ban on ageing & its consequences pushed to their logical, extreme conclusions, with plenty of horrifying & hilarious gore, some devastating moments, & a De Palma-esque palette (my) dreams are made off.

ICYMI I wrote about what a shame it is that most people will have to watch HIT MAN through a link later.
A movie from the director of ‘Dazed and Confused’ starring one of Hollywood’s rising stars—sounds like box office magic, right? Alas, ‘Hit Man’ is headed to Netflix. @ManiLazic: .

Not trying to blow anyone’s mind but I’ve recently realised that telling myself that I do, in fact, deserve to be happy, makes a world of difference? More of that this year.
Today's card. Pay attention to how you feel as you tell stories about your life & what's going on w/ you. Do the swords you're carrying make you feel peaceful, connected, expansive, isolated, afraid, helpless? What will be the impact of carrying tales that make you feel this way?

I finally did it - I wrote about PHANTOM THREAD! I discussed how Alma is a terrible model & how PTA's camera shows us that she understands Reynolds so well! It's my @ebertvoices debut!

I don’t want to say too much about Andrew Haigh’s ALL OF US STRANGERS - just know that it’s wildly original, tender, often funny and definitely good for your heart, and go see it as soon as you can. #lff

I watched almost all of Sharon Tate's movies ahead of seeing Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME. IN HOLLYWOOD, which made the experience even more moving. For @ringer, I wrote about how peculiar, difficult yet promising her short career in the movies was.

Beyond thrilled to have written about the brilliant films of Claire Denis for @ringer! She’s one of our greatest filmmakers, finally getting the international love she deserves thx to her new film HIGH LIFE & with a retro at @BAMfilmBrooklyn!

Apparently Jean-Pierre Léaud and his wife are going through tough times financially and a fundraising campaign has been set up to help them. There isn’t much info out there, but the little we know seems to come from Serge Toubiana, director of the Cinémathèque Française.
