For @ArtReview_ I wrote about cinema in 2024, the year the film world turned a blind eye to genocide

The fact that two films of 2024 (A Complete Unknown, Anora) tried to copy one of the most romantic scenes in cinema history—Paul Henreid lighting two cigarettes in Now, Voyager—and turned it into two of the most vapid, blandly-shot scenes imaginable. I Hate Modern Cinema

@RavenWoods18 @wennis_dang Yes I was! You have a very good memory. It was actually produced by an independent educational media company called Child's Eye Media (though perhaps it appeared on the BBC in some guise?) That was when I was 5 years old, I have very fond memories of it. Hope you enjoyed it too!

@MiguelHutch You guys were completely brilliant, Hutch - that Northumberland category was as brutal as you said, I can’t believe they thought that was balanced?? But nonetheless you guys are the best and an honour to have played against you

@CineramaSave Sure, I just think that that reflects a deeper problem within culture that things are so capitalist and commercialised that more artistically daring films can't get seen or even funded unless they might win an award

@jman87530075 I literally agree that it's a meaningless awards show! That's the point of my tweet!

@OMENEDIT I'm glad more people will see it now. I also think that if we had less hypercapitalist film industry where funding was more widely distributed, and if we had more funding for independent cinemas, that would be better than celebrating the Oscars when they occasionally get it right

@EAXHOE Sure, I just think that what is really needed is a healthier ecosystem of funding within the industry where films can get promoted and seen regardless of the Oscars' seal of approval
