So yeah the news was that I've spent the evening working on a MAME driver for the Atari prototype Marble Madness II. It is now fully playable, although a few things still need to be verified.

@TheNCSmaster Switch games *just work* which is what I want in a console. I put in a cartridge, I play the game. No installing, no internet requirement. It *just works* and works *anywhere* That's the main reason I use my Switch over the PC and PS5 I already have.

People sometimes say that Congo Bongo ripped off Donkey Kong. The reality is, it's basically a sequel. Both were programmed by Ikegami Tsushinki, for Nintendo and Sega respectively. Note the similarities in presentation (bonus counter etc.) due to it being the same developer.

the TLDR for this is that they actually put a 'Genesis on a Chip' inside the cartridge rather than emulating the Genesis on the GBA.. which is fascinating in its own way.

Finally, after years of searching, I have obtained a GBA cart with a Mega Drive/Genesis emulator on it (thanks to Ankos!). I have been wanting to research this for some time after seeing it on YouTube, and it turns out it is far more interesting than I anticipated. 🧵(1/x)

So yeah, I called libretro out on their hypocritical stance on stopping online bullying when they were a source of homophobic abuse towards Near. They blocked me. It's a PR stunt on their part, they're not serious about clamping down on it, they're complicit. Avoid LR/RetroArch

One frustrating thing with emulation is the sheer amount of effort that gets put in to making something like MAME respectable in any given field, only for the masses to just want to throw money at projects like RetroArch for just rehashing ancient, buggy, versions of our work.

@cultofthelamb @devolverdigital Honestly I think more developers should share this kind of thing after release, it gives some more insight into the industry (and may even give some budding developers hope if they see the stages their favourite games went through)

With this dumped all known original versions of the Game & Watch library have been dumped. The games with melody ROMs still need a proper electronic dumping method, as they are currently constructed from output analysis, but this is another landmark in the Game & Watch story.

XingXing improved the video emulation so that Fearless Pinocchio is somewhat playable. It seems to run at the incorrect speed for now though (too fast, with stutter) and has no sound. The Phillips XA CPU I'm still working on emulating is probably used for the audio and I/O.

@dark1x @PrnomNo05673639 And if something doesn't aim to be one of these, no matter how well it does otherwise it gets considered a failure in the AAA industry. Unrealistic target. Streaming services don't help either, nobody buys. Digital also means buyers can't recoup costs. Broken models all round.

One thing MAME 0.261 will support is Game-A-Tron's Crazy Mazey. While this will be marked as a clone of Pacman (as it's hacked from that) it's actually a little more. It introduces these doors, which block your movement (but only after corners weirdly)

MAME is not a dirty word. I've noticed a few reviews lately retroactively remove 'MAME' from ways you can play something, in favour of only naming streaming services they're sponsored by. I asked one why, and it was 'by request of a current license holder'

The dumped NMK-113 is interesting, as it seems to contain the code for 5 different games, and selects which codepath to use based on a port read. One of the paths appears to be correct for Hacha Mecha Fighter, so the protected sets of that work now too without a simulation.

Jorge Silva dumped the arcade version of Sun Mixing's Super Bubble Bobble, an obviously unlicensed, but very good version of Bubble Bobble running on Megadrive clone hardware. The MD version is one of the reasons I wrote HazeMD back in the day.

Windy Fairy ( @_987123879113 ) worked with Guru to extract a decrypted binary for the Namco System 10 Point Blank 3 and Gunbalina. This is not yet properly decrypted, but is functional using the predecrypted code. Here's an attract mode video

Emulator developers are small creators too, we don't exist to simply be walked all over, or banned if we speak out against people who are walking all over us. We don't exist to be banned because you don't like the direction we've taken our projects etc.

The Senario 'Video Extreme' 50 in 1 unit was also dumped, this one wasted a Speed Racer license on simple title screens for common games that weren't even reskinned.

This appears to be what happens if you give Japanese arcade developers a near unlimited budget to create a Rock, Paper Scissors game. It will be supported in the next release thanks to Phil Bennett + others.

@Wario64 Hopefully somebody will keep tabs on which games use it, so that I can avoid buying them (I say this as somebody has probably 500 physical Switch games at this point) @NintendoAmerica / @NintendoEurope DENUVO WILL COST YOU CUSTOMERS

the MCU dumped from Thunder Dragon (also marked NMK-110, but different ROM) was hooked up too. Not such a big deal as there is a fully functional unprotected set, but still nice to see this run without the messy simulation code.

@Wario64 Hopefully this will be the death of Unity then. It's already ruined so many games because it's appeared to be the cheap/easy option, despite having a mountain of technical problems that are dragging this generation down.

@Moskaato @TheNCSmaster Yeah, there are a good number of Switch games like that, or only a tiny update Means I'm not forever having to juggle installs around to make room or hoping WiFi is good for downloading Some companies (esp AAAs) still take the piss with big updates, but those are easy to avoid

More shots from Top Driving. In addition to ClawGrip, I should also give credit to Museo del Recreativo and I dub this one Blombier Car

We're breaking new ground in different areas all the time, in a scene that somehow sees 20 year old versions of our work running (badly) on weak hardware as more valuable than that. The disconnect between level of work, how much we're giving back, and support is out of this world
