Because there are 7.5 billion of you and only 2500 of her.
I for one would like my grandchildren to live in a world where bangle tigers still exist.
GBA HD AIO got some skin to really make this project shine like a professional product.
Can’t believe it’s been a year since I started down this journey. 😳
Someone reached out to me to find out if I want some old C64 hardware he’s been keeping around for a few decades. What I got was a bit more than I expected.
In March 2017, I got exclusive access to a 90’s game hoarder’s storage unit. His kids were selling their inheritance. I helped them with a lot of repair and pricing. As a thank you, I got this for $200. Atari factory seals still on the box.
@ZubyMusic
Fun fact: the US constitution has a minimum age to be president, but not max age. Know why? Because people didn’t live this long 200 years ago! They never imagined it!
gbaHD-AIO cases from
@collingall
are amazing! Unbelievable precision and a perfect compliment to an awesome open source project.
480p-1080p GBA consolization without using original PCB and easy firmware upgrades via SD!
I decided to see what the real cost of building a GBA-HD would be in today's market. In particular, what I believe to be the best solution - Zenkfoo's gbaHD-AIO-Shield. Lets see if it's even possible in today's market!
Follow along in this thread to see what I found out.
I do A LOT of PS1Digital and XStation installs everyday. Rather than bore you with another install pic, here are some pics to help some understand the precision required to do these installs. It’s not something for those new to soldering.
After a decade, my arcade machine is finally complete. Thanks
@RetroLabs_com
for the incredible marquee, very high quality print and material! That empty plexi attract board needed something to go in it!
Something very special landed on my workbench. I’m sure a lot of Nintendo fans would be interested in learning about this as much as I am.
SNES JAMMA 5 slot arcade PCB. Build on top of a real SNES.
PSOne came in with no direct video, plays music CDs but not detecting PS1 discs. C550 and C551 fixes video out. C705 fixes not detecting PS1 discs. These little PSOnes now need cap kits. 🥺
A Sega Genesis game came in that periodically froze after a short while. After inspection, found 2 traces that were marginal at best. Quick trace repair and it’s good as new again.
I've been trying to solve my EverDrive N8 crashes. I discovered this is an old problem going back to 2007 that effected the PowerPak. The fix was to add 100 ohm resistors on the 8 CPU data lines.
Years later, the ED N8 never got this fix. The N8 Pro has 100 ohm resistors on
This is a great catch! WATA graded a reproduction! The original game doesn't have that dimple in the plastic case (zoom in to see it)
@eBay
should remove this listing.
A dead Grind Stormer came in; while most would replace the PCB, the correct fix to preserve the Tengen PCB is to fix it. 9 vias were open or had nonzero resistance value. No other Genesis carts were killed as part of this repair. Still looks OEM.
PSA: If you find yourself with a broken XStation flat ribbon cable, high quality brand name replacement can be purchased from Digi-Key. Search for P/N: 732-3544-ND
Failed N64Digital install came in today. Parts of the flex cable were still embedded in the solder. Bent pins and traces all fixed up. Another N64 saved.
Since ‘98 I’ve only owned
@Honda
vehicles. This past weekend my wife was involved in a serious car accident. The Pilot did its job and saved her and my son from high speed side swipe by a V8 Ford SUV. Car took the hit, they walked away. Thank you Honda.
I don’t understand why anyone will spend $1000 on eBay for an HDMI modded N64 when RGB modded one +
@retrotink2
RetroTink 5X will give you pretty much the same result for a fraction of the cost. Even UltraHDMI 2 is insane price now.
We need to stop supporting clones. We give a lot of grief to the more known bottom feeders, but let others on AliExpress get away. They didn't even bother to improve much on the original layout from the real McWill Game Gear LCD kit. Just say no to installing these.
After months of collaboration with
@RetroLabs_com
here’s what I consider to be the ultimate Retro Chip Tester for anyone repairing retro consoles and computers.
Sega Genesis VA1.8 came in for 3BP upgrade when I noticed it has a Sega PCB added to it from the factory. This seems to be generating new CSync into the CXA1145
Something different today. A lot of expensive Konami arcade PCBs came in today that all have leaking sound modules. Modern reproductions to the rescue.
This is an awesome find that not a lot of people talk about. If you have a dead backlight in the TurboExpress due to failed transformer, you can transplant the one found in a Game Gear and it works perfectly.
Another Neo Geo AES resurrected from the dead. 2 part epoxy to strengthen fiberglass, 1 bodge wire, dozens of jump wires. Unibios 4 and it’s ready to play.
3h under the AmScope is not the best way to spend a Friday evening. 😂
Proof that using 6.3V soothing capacitors for the GPU in the OG XBOX was a silly mistake. Factory fitted a 10V capacitor where 6.3V goes and it didn’t leak! I suggest only using 3300uF 10V caps; skip 6.3V.
Between 2008 and 2015 I took a break from full time retro repair to renovate my 100 year old house. Today got back in the saddle. Over the next few days installing a new kitchen backsplash.
Anyone care to see pics or keep it retro only? Here’s what I’m working with.
Before I start soldering, I always clean the console I work on. For instance, did you know the N64 cart connector is removable? Let’s see what’s hiding under this one. 😳
Panasonic Q tray and rails arrived from JLCPCB. I’m so impressed by the level of detail, smoothness, color, … of resin prints (compared to FDM in pics) Highly recommended. No duties either!
As a child, I had many birthdays at Chuck E Cheese. There, I played a single arcade game more than any other. >20 years I’ve own a copy of the PCB. Finally, got around to test if it works. Toaplan’s 1985 Tiger-Heli.
After being dead for decades, a CD32 resurrected! Needed new RAM, Paula I/O controller and 74F373 RAM octal latch (and of course new caps) Couldn’t have done it without DiagROM.
Original XBOX super capacitors are so old now, removing them is no longer sufficient. At this point, many will require board level repair. Unfortunately there are no schematics for the XBOX so the value of all these components around the super cap are not yet known.
If you own an original XBOX, chances are the clock super capacitor has leaked and has started your system on the path to failure. Cleanup is very time consuming.
2 WiiHDMI installs today. I’m glad to see we finally have an HDMI solution for all the revisions of the full size Wii consoles. Kits also came with the latest firmware already loaded. 😎
The Retro Pixel IPS screen upgrade for the Neo Geo Pocket Color is one of my favorite portable screen upgrades. Simple to install and works great. The glass screen included is an awesome bonus.
I wanted to better understand why my launch PS3 is failing. I purchased a USB to TTL serial adapter, took the PS3 apart and soldered the 4 wires to interface with the SYSCON. Here's some interesting things I discovered:
- The ERRLOG only has 2022 errors. Something to do with AV
Multitpost on why one should never give up. Ever.
A decade ago I purchased an Ultracade UVC to connect to my 240p arcade monitor to downscale 480p+ content. It cost a pretty penny back then ($200USD) and after a few weeks it arrived from France; not working. 🧵
This was recently offered to me for purchase. I couldn’t say no. My retro hardware collecting meter is off the scale knowing I now own this rare unicorn. ❤️
Everything fully restored and working by some chap in Canada. 😁
Another Wii came in for an HDMI upgrade and new shell. When I do a shell swap I always try to use as much of the original (including labels) as the replacement parts are not the same quality as the original Nintendo ones.
The N64D started arriving yesterday. In past 24h, I received 2 e-mails from people that tried to install the kit themselves and killed their N64.
N64D is not a good beginner soldering project. If you don't know what you're doing, leave it to someone who does.
A Sega CD came in with a clunking CD drive. Surprisingly the caps are all good but the drive was dry. Silicon grease like Shin-Etsu goes a long way to quiet rattling optical drives. Don’t confuse it for lithium grease which dries hard and works against you in the long term.
Everything I know, everything I learned, pointed to broken solder balls under the CPLD. But this time I had to tools and so I reflowed the CPLD. With nothing to lose, a miracle happened. It's fixed. 😍
Why
@collingall
hasn’t made a professional looking case for this is beyond me. 😉
The OSSC screams “basement hobby” in its current skin.
@collingall
can totally give it the look it deserves. Who else agrees?
Picked up a 5501 “broken” PS1 at a local swap meet today for nothing. This poor thing was probably under water. Nothing like a quick clean and new PSU from my parts pin to get it all working great.
