Manga is one of the few places in the entire pop culture world that still incentivizes innovating and creating new stories rather than endless sequels, remakes, and franchise works. With original anime deader than ever, the reason anime still has vitality is more than ever manga

There are obvious economic reasons for this, as manga is dirt cheap to make compared to animation, and this has always been true to an extent. But there was still an appetite to make daring original anime in past decades that just isn't there anymore.

Overall, this is definitely the best animated adaptation of these 101 chapters. The Madhouse version has some good parts in this section, such as the Gon x Hisoka and Kurapika x Uvogin fights, but the direction, animation, art and coloring are far less inspired and pretty generic

Galaxy Express 999 (Rintaro, 1979): a very solid coming-of-age adventure story with great visuals and a truly incredible soundtrack. It's a bit rough around the edges but I definitely see why it's a classic

Just finished rewatching the first arc of Utena. Was quite impressed by #7 , "Unfulfilled Juri" (SB Mamoru Hosoda, AD Akemi Hayashi, KA Yumeta Company), whose formalistic yet emotionally charged direction brings to mind some of Hosoda's best works from his peak on 1999~2006.

Saint Seiya: the Heated Battle of the Gods (1988) has a script as predictable and lacking in substance as the usual Takao Koyama franchise fare, but also outerworldly visuals with Shigeyasu Yamauchi direction, Shingo Araki/Michi Himeno duo KA and Tadao Kubota backgrounds

Hideaki Anno is such a big fan of Oniisama e... that he wrote a message for the booklet in the original LD release and another for the recent BD re-release, but I can't find either one on the internet ;_;
