When I am in facilitation spaces where funders tell me the reasons why they cannot use words like white supremacy, racial justice, misogyny or even the word race, I have to take a deep breath. My thoughts on philanthropy's obsession with the word 'equity':
Just to add to this: for the greater good is always the foundation for violence. ✨ALWAYS ✨ And also this was an issue of consent as well (on a marginalized —child and woman—body).

I couldn’t make up what folks have lived through. The co-opting of liberatory language w/o praxis has made this work nearly impossible to navigate + do safely. And by this work I mean liberation. Decolonization is now so far from grasp b/c it became synonymous with 💵 + ⚪️ness.
Honestly—was at this show last night as well. It was PURE joy. I felt like I was tripping on the best of shit the vibes were just wild + iconic + nostalgic. Its fair to say we were watching an iconic duo at their finest. I also cant feel my feet or back — we just did not stop. 😍
Went to see Silk Sonic last night and lemme tell you, I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun at concert. My feet hurt and I had on sneakers — that’s how good this was. Anderson Paak and Bruno Mars are electrifying performers. My soul is full.

we truly have conversations about rape culture, toxic masculinity, + the asks of women in a sector staffed almost entirely by women but still mostly run (and entirely built) by men. So much of the "safety net" doesn't apply to philanthropy and for many women, it is life or death.

I don’t recognize their Mary. Everything that makes Mary Mary seems to offend those who struggle with the weight of how present she is today in the faces and places they deem too low for a woman who askes them to join her. Its devestating and a distortion.

I went off on my insta about this so… my husband has spent tonight (which he had off) working to secure and ration oxygen for his patients. He is literally right now trying to figure out HOW TO RATION OXYGEN for a hospital system. This is dystopian. This is America.
In the ER. My doc came into triage + asked me directly: what works to manage your pain + breakthrough? And he ordered it. This was before we had data to diagnosis. He just trusted that I was in severe pain + would know best. When I tell you this is so rare it took my breath away.

The biggest threat to Latinx mental health is stigma. Its us. Its our rhetoric. Its religiosity. That needs to really sink in as we work on breaking generational trauma with the next generation looking to us in the way we looked to our parents when drowning. It can end with us.
Latine mental health is a complex issue that's often overlooked. As a community, we face unique challenges that can impact our mental well-being. It's important to prioritize our mental health and seek help when needed.
So often folks say “measure equity” as if it is some concrete thing — and as if the real onus isn’t on BIPOC+ folks to assure the systems that they are doing “less harm” — never asking the systems/folks to deconstruct the foundational truths they hold + exist upon.

Because of the moving goal post/construct of whiteness, it isn’t able to be categorized as a “normative” in the way we use it critically. Its more nefarious/has a different intent (heteronormativity is already crumbling for the same reasons). Its mutability constrains definition.
