@XanadanX @Miss_Snuffy No money for talent/ability? Reallocate to what? Being average? I was incredibly lucky to be born at a time when even poor, free dinner kids like me got Latin at a Scots comprehensive (compulsory for 1 year then a choice). It literally changed my life.

@XanadanX @Miss_Snuffy And who are you to choose? So kids can teach themselves? Only working class ones? The others can learn in a classroom. Studying Latin makes Spanish a lot easier later also Italian, Finnish (case systems) & countless others. God forbid clever w/c kids should have opportunities.

@XanadanX @Miss_Snuffy How are their parents meant to afford a tutor? Perhaps that 1 in 10 deserve the opportunity? Or are they not allowed to aspire? A wealth of choice for the education of those with money, but here's what we think you should study if you're working class. Why should you decide?

@johnhenry185 Thanks. My husband is half Manouche (and not an academic or brought up in the community at all) and it simultaneously made me more aware, but also recognise myself as more and more of an outsider (and therefore less qualified). I wish you well in your work.

@KatyaTaylor Ah, advances are depressingly low, I know. I've always had another full time job, never been able to live off writing. Shame, freelancing must be so precarious. x

@mezzocheryl @BigIssue You've chatted to her, so where is she from? What's her first language? Perhaps speak to her about why you find this difficult? If I hadn't enough to eat, I'd probably try to make people guilty if I thought they'd donate a little. And no, you absolutely don't have to apologise..

@mezzocheryl @BigIssue Fair enough. I apologise. My husband is part Roma and people forever generalise about what that means. There are some organisations that can help if she's Romany.

@RobGMacfarlane My favourite of hers too. I often teach it. I wrote to her from Lebanon after I had been to Lady Hester Stanhope's Joun ruin for a second time (we had had a brief correspondence before). She wrote to me that she often thought of the current cats as descendants of Hester's.
