Today, I made the difficult decision to leave the church after being refused baptism. For a year and a half, I patiently waited, attended Sunday worship, and committed to the process—only to be told I wouldn’t be baptised because of my journalism and the time I dedicate to it. It was already a challenge to attend every service they offered, but I made as much time as I could. It took a lot for me to go in the first place, as there is a growing number of churches that lean into progressive politics during sermons, and I just won’t put myself in a situation where I have to listen to it. This experience has been deeply disheartening and has left me questioning whether the denomination I’ve been part of is right for me. I have a lot to reflect on, but it felt wrong not going today, bear in mind, I was an atheist for 28 years. Onwards and upwards, as they say.
