We are looking forward to hosting Andy in the podcast very soon. Follow to catch the links when it lands
When the Andy Woodward story about sexual abuse in soccer broke in 2016, I was both deeply saddened and relieved. Saddened obviously for the plight of so many young boys exploited and harmed whilst in the pursuit of their dreams. But relieved that the men I worked with could see that they were not alone in being victimised. That this had also happened to some of those they idolised. I’ve just finished Andy’s book Position of Trust in preparation for a podcast. And it’s a powerful read. Searingly honest. Both profoundly sad and inspirationally uplifting. Key takeaways from the book: · Whilst those with nefarious motives will embed themselves in any opportunity to exploit the aspirations and isolation of children, they are enabled by those who turn a blind eye. Football is no different to the RC or CoE churches. · How boys and families are groomed and can become alienated from each other. The families are often unseen victims – nowhere is this more evident than in Andy’s story. · The confusion of a pubescent boy trying to make sense of what’s happening and the footmark this leaves on relationships and life · That efforts to extract justice from those who should be accountable often amplify the harm · That the integrity of the human spirit can soar despite experiencing huge trauma The book is heartbreaking in places but is well-worth a read. Andy’s integrity as a human being shines through the book even when discussing his own failings and ultimately offers inspiration for recovery. Not just for individuals who share his experiences but for those who have the power to ensure their organisation does things differently.
