A great and very surreal moment today, getting my Newham Council induction.
If you live in Forest Gate North and need support, I’m now set up on liz.cronin
@newham

I’m so grateful to everyone who voted and campaigned, all across Newham and Forest Gate North!
There’s loads to do to earn the trust you’ve placed in us. I’ll share contact details ASAP and get to work - with all residents, however you voted ♥️ 🌹
More canvassing with the tireless
@Uma_Kumaran
in Forest Gate North, Stratford and Bow. 4th July can’t come soon enough for residents 🗳️
Lots to do locally, including around some anti-social behaviour and traffic. If lucky enough to be elected, I’ll get stuck in right away! 🔧📝
Bright and early conversations with Forest Gaters with Councillor

Heartening to see support for us and Labour’s Stratford and Bow MP candidate
@Uma_Kumaran
🌹
📣🌹Excited to announce our 3 amazing
@newham_labour
by-election candidates who’ll be local champions, dedicated to deliver a fairer Newham for our residents.
🌹 Maryland ward: Melanie Onovo
🌹Forest Gate North: Liz Cronin
🌹Beckton: Blossom Young
Every vote counts in Forest Gate North. It’s so important to stand up and be counted - if you want to tell the Tories they’ve let you down, it’s a strong Labour showing that does that.
Trust me and
@Uma_Kumaran
with your support; we’ll work so hard to earn it 🌹
#labourdoorstep
This is heartbreaking, and an absolute disgrace. This kind of hate crime has no place anywhere, and especially not in an area as welcoming and proudly diverse as Forest Gate. 🏳️🌈
#LoveAlwaysWins
🧵🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 This morning, residents alerted us to a hate crime as someone had defaced our Progress Rainbow flag outside Forest Gate Station, which is a celebration of our diversity.
We are reporting it to
@MPSNewham
police & we’ll repaint the flag with pride and in solidarity.✊🏾
Door-knocking for the fabulous
@blossomyoung
, our Labour candidate in the Beckton council by-election on 18th July. Lots and lots of support 🌹

It feels poignant - and so right given the current racist unrest - to honour our utterly diverse history and culture. Purple Haze was written in Forest Gate!
Huge credit to
@zabouartist
, and everyone across Newham who worked on these Woodgrange Rd and Chestnut Ave murals ♒️
Relentless hate, which undermines a symbol Forest Gate residents voted for in an open process. Please rest assured the team is working on a solution to this together 🫶🏻
I’m sorry to share these images. Sadly, once again, the flags in Forest Gate have been defaced.
I will do everything in my power to tackle LGBT+ hate crime.
I know the fear and hurt this causes.
I’ll work with Newham Council, local police & the Minister for equalities on this
Cracking morning canvassing, followed by a very necessary coffee and bun at Ramble ☕️
On the 4th July, vote for change:
@Uma_Kumaran
for Stratford and Bow, and
@LizCronin97
for Forest Gate North 🌹
Loads to do at Forest Gate Library today - childcare info, healthy food demos, DJ decks (next stop, Amnesia…)
Councillor surgeries are here, 10 - 11AM on the 2nd and 3rd Saturday of each month 📝
Free primary school breakfasts and a reformed childcare system, funded by removing private school tax breaks and restoring the top rate of income tax for the 1%.
The girls that get it, get it ✨
My Forest Gate North councillor’s surgery is on this morning until 11 - do please come along to the Gate Library for help with anything from parking to the public realm 📋
First surgery with
@rectripp
done. Lots to do, especially around temporary accommodation.
Followed by Forest Gayte Pride! Just an amazing group of people giving up their time to help others. Continues tomorrow too at

🏳️🌈
Make sure to check out

The weather can’t make its mind up, but you need to ☔️
If you want a change from this disastrous Conservative government, don’t risk not voting Labour on the 4th July 🌹

Congratulations
@LizCronin97
, our new Labour Councillor for Forest Gate North!! You have so much knowledge and you care about people. You'll be amazing and will bring so much to our team!!
Hope we can still litter pick together in Custom House 😃

We’re expecting the next version of the text later today.
We’re nearing the final opportunity for leaders to make history for the right reasons, or headlines for the wrong reasons.

Free legislative and political advice for life for any parliamentarian who chucks in a private members’ bill applying the Health and Safety at Work Act to Parliament 😷

We're at the Family Hub Launch Event at the Shipman Youth Zone. Absolutely buzzing, beautiful weather & everyone is enjoying the occasion. Huge 'Thank You' to all the volunteers & congrats to everyone involved on making this an amazing event.

Absolutely. Childcare is too often talked about as a ‘women’s issue’ or a nice to have - it’s critical infrastructure, integral to any sensible economic strategy
Childcare has been broken by the Conservatives.
Labour will make lasting change to how we think about childcare, integrating it into our education system so parents have flexibility and children get the best start in life.
If you’re missing the delights of election campaigning, please come and help us out in the upcoming Newham by-elections! 🌹
We very much encourage first-timers, and there will be many snacks 👀

PSA, that grim sense of decline isn’t Covid, or Ukraine, or normal, or inevitable. Other comparable countries are doing better - more money to spend, warmer homes, and much better rates of surviving the major illnesses.
It can be better here, and it will be 🌹

Utterly infuriating
"Like the empty cable car nearby, the loss-making ArcelorMittal Orbit, the overheating Routemaster bus, and the ill-fated garden bridge, the Royal Albert Dock plan bore all the hallmarks of Boris Johnson’s mayoralty: an overblown vanity project"
‘It’s been a disaster’: how Boris Johnson’s docklands business hub turned into a ghost town - a project with murky undertones as uncovered by
@Channel4News

Council polling centres and districts review:
Your time, views and expertise are much appreciated 🧠
Great to see the launch of the Council of Skills Advisors’ new Skills and Learning report, chaired by the legendary Lord Blunkett. Loads of really positive stuff in there to draw on, for a future with education at the heart of government policy 📝
👏🏻 evidence on cash transfers is really strong.
“Recent studies have debunked stereotypes about cash transfers causing dependency, increasing consumption of temptation goods…cash payments to poor households cause improvements in consumption, savings, nutrition, mental health”
The Tories are failing families and denying our kids opportunities that help them thrive.
While Tory leadership candidates compete to damage our country, Labour would be putting money in families’ pockets — tackling the cost of living crisis right now.
Really disappointing, considering our relatively strong performance on this in the past. As much as policy reversals, political signalling really matters 🛑
Oops...UK slips in EY ranking of best countries for green investment
US, Germany, France ahead
Due to “diminishing of green policies” that leave "investors with reduced confidence in UK renewables”👀
No shock US leads race with Inflation Reduction Act
A beautiful day in Parliament, marking the extension of the right to telemedical abortion with heroes Liz Sugg, BPAS, RCOG, MSI RC and all fellow travellers ✊
“He would also argue that Britain has over-delivered on confronting climate change”
But delaying UK climate action (plus new North Sea licences and a coal mine) risks convincing sceptical countries *not* to join the confrontation, right before COP28 👎🏻
No love for Liz T, but no MP and especially no foreign secretary takes the 13 weeks of parliamentary recess as holiday. More like work, constituency work, and a one week faux holiday they work through then get slated for anyway. Framing like this is misleading 👎🏻
💥JRF have found that Newham has *the highest* destitution rate in the whole country - the proud, wonderful people who live here have been let down. We need urgent change, starting with fair pay, many more affordable, decent homes, and an end to no-fault evictions
Destitution has ⬆️ across the UK, but particularly in London, Wales and the West Midlands.
In Scotland destitution ⬆️ much more slowly.
Newham, Manchester and Middlesbrough were the local authorities with the highest rates of destitution.
Rraab says he had received "informal tip-offs by a Cabinet Secretary and a Director of Propriety and Ethics that unionised officials were targeting me and other ministers".
Otherwise, he claims that PET gave him a "clean bill of health" when vetted for cabinet roles.
Really sad that of the ten million Conservatives entering the race for next prime minister, there isn’t one with an outside-the-South-East accent

There aren’t enough maths teachers left to do this though are there. He knows this, we know this, and he knows we know this - what an utter waste of breath.
Nice the PM’s graced us with his presence though. Rome’s burning Rishi 🤷🏻♀️

It’s a national scandal. From Robert Verkaik’s Posh Boys ⬇️
PS - under Labour, private schools would pay full business rates. Just like state schools do.
Elite home town 🫶🏻
“Capacity of local government to make major changes has been almost entirely overlooked … According to a Federation of Small Businesses study, 58% more of the money spent with small local companies remains within the local economy compared to large companies”
???
Evidently the skills, further and higher education minister is going to focus on this nonsense rather than … skills, further or actual higher education issues. Despairing at our now profoundly unserious country
"The current system would rather our young people get a degree in Harry Potter studies, than in construction," says Higher Education Minister Andrea Jenkyns, who says that universities are feeding students "a diet of critical race theory, anti British history and Social Marxism."
Councils are responsible for so many local things MPs aren’t: your schools, social care, house-building, potholes and bins among them.
Remember to have your say today, and make it Labour 🌹

🚨 7 months after I began a little campaign at work, asking Parliamentary authorities to provide Halal food options for Muslim Staff & MPs on the Parliamentary Estate, I'm delighted that today (with the support of many) this has happened! Got a little spring in my step 🥹❤️
