Today I'm releasing a new Unofficial English Satsuma! PDF partially translated by me up to page 30 of 47! This 52.8 MB version has: corrected grammar, new explanations, and an accessible table of contents for easy navigating when downloaded!

An interesting line consistency drill practiced by Japanese animators is called "Baumkuchen"! Based on the German cake with the same name, the animator carefully draws evenly spaced lines between 2 rings!
Sounds simple, but is quite difficult to master!
In 2021, the Association of Japanese Animators published a free PDF called「アニメーターの課題集」(ENG:A Collection of Exercises for Animators) to help the development of aspiring animators.
Even if you can't read Japanese, try these exercises out!

Did you know Clip Studio Paint offers 7 free and ready-to-use Japanese Animation templates from different Animation Studios?
All you need to do is download the file, extract the contents, open the .clip file, and boom! You're ready to start!
Link:
Here are these 3 exercises again, but now they've been unofficially translated into English (by me)!

The Anime Studio MADHOUSE has a tab on their website called ‘Special’ that displays production materials from various Anime!
In particular, the links for Overlord and One Punch Man showcase easily viewable Genga cuts that are great to study from!

Joseph Gilland's book, 'Elemental Magic Volume II' originally had supplemental videos hosted on a now defunct website, but I was able to use the Wayback Machine to recover a Water Splash Demo series!
You can view/download these 7 videos below: ▼
Another free resource the Association of Japanese Animations website has for download is a PDF called 'A Manual for TV Anime Series Production Assistants'!
This 51 page PDF is available in Japanese, English, and Chinese!

Have a free and high-quality Japanese Animation Timesheet!
Don't know how to use one?
Take a look at page 5 of the Satsuma! PDF (unofficial translation by me), which includes notes on nearly every aspect of the Timesheet!
The Association of Japanese Animations has a free standard A4 size Layout template available for personal and commercial use!
The file format is Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or PDF, and each part is layered separately for easy editing!
Download Link: ▼
So you've got your Timesheet, your Layout Paper template for animating, but now you want a pencil brush, color set, etc. for animating in Clip Studio Paint.
Let's look at some great free CSP downloadable assets!
1. Realistic Animator's Pencil for LO: ▼
Another training drill done by Japanese animators is this one where you transform a circle into a triangle!
This drill challenges your ability to create clean lines for accurate inbetween drawings!

If you own the book, 'Yoshida Style! Drawing Anime Effects', you can view a GIF collection of the text's effects!
Download the GIF zip from the link below, and type the password on page 2 of the book to access the contents!

If you’re familiar with Timing Charts in the West, you may wonder: What is the Japanese equivalent?
The answer: ツメ指示 (Tsume Shiji)!
両詰め - Both Ends Spaced
先詰め - Slow In
後詰め - Slow Out
The chart style is slightly different, but the meaning is the same!
The following free 1920x1080 (192dpi) CSP animation template works great BUT it has a few nuances to fix before using it:🧵
Download 2 assets:
1. Type the dimensions as shown
2. add カット用テンプレート material to 'Shot Template'
Another great (free!) download asset for CSP is the Animation Auxiliary Set Ver. 2!
It contains:
Auto Actions, Timesheets, LO Template, Color Design Sheet, Gousei Slip, Brushes, a classic Cut Folder, and an excellent Color Set for Animation!

MADHOUSE updated the ‘Special’ column on their website to include Layout sequences and Genga stills from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End!
There’s materials from all Episodes (1 to 28)!

If you want to try drawing a walk cycle but don’t know where to start, take a look at this free CSP walk cycle asset!
The best way to practice with this is to search for a character’s design sheet and use that as reference over the asset base!

So I was watching 'Mr. Villain's Day Off' when suddenly Mr. Villain's walk cycle was animated really smoothly on 2s!
(couldn't find this on Sakugabooru, so I'm posting it here)

Why does my brain tell me that drawing using references is “cheating”? 😣
I KNOW that professional artists use references in their work all the time, but when I consider using them myself, my brain goes, “Nuh uh.” 🙂↔️

Update on this:
I’ll be doing self-study exercises for a while to learn more about the Douga (inbetweens) pipeline. 🙇♀️
At the moment, it doesn’t seem possible to do Douga freelance work since those jobs are often outsourced to overseas Douga companies, not solo animators.
Hey everyone, unfortunately, I got DMCA’d by Big Copyright™ today, so I won’t be able to share free and open-source materials anymore. 😞
Instead, I will be posting pictures of my cat, Buttercup.
Thanks for your understanding.

I also wanna add that the ¥2,500 (if that is what they were paid) is per cut, and looking at the snippet shown here, I see 4 cuts which is minimum ¥10,000, not ¥2,500 for the entire sequence.
The difference between 原画 (Genga/Key Animation) and ニ原画 (Nigen/2nd Key Animation):
原画 - corrected drawings from Layout (LO) that *you* drew previously
ニ原画 - corrected drawings from Layout (LO) that *someone* else drew previously

Something worth memorizing in Japanese is the 五十音 (gojūon), which is Japan’s system for ordering kana! You can compare it to the Alphabetical Order used in English!
You can easily look through a book’s index, or glossary of terms, and find exactly what you’re looking for!

To add to this, if an animator only does Layout work and not their Genga corrections, they will still be credited in the 原画 (Genga) section in the credits.
I’ve never seen credits that show separate sections for LO and Genga.

I know there’s several ways to go about translating something, which is why I’m sharing the (not so secret) way I’ve been translating the Satsuma PDF!
I don’t recommend DeepL for translating Kanji; instead I use an electronic dictionary (電子辞書)! This baby has everything: 1/2
Let's take a look at them!
1. Regular Template (1500 x 844px, 150 dpi)
2. Toei Animation (1600 x 900px, 144 dpi)
3. Studio Hibari (2056 x 1157px, 200 dpi)
4. Kinema Citrus (1800 x 1200px, 150 dpi)
So I found out that the Japanese Language school I attended while in Japan sells their Kanji textbooks on Amazon Japan!
Name of the school: KCP学園KCP地球市民日本語学校
Here’s the Amazon link to the 1st Kanji textbook:
While researching what the job of a Douga-man (動画マン) entails, I discovered that some Douga-man also do Shiage (仕上げ), or Finishing/Coloring.
This explains why credits will show 「動画・仕上げ」 together, instead of titled separately like Genga (原画) and Nigenga (ニ原画).
In page 28 of the Satsuma! PDF, the ‘Strobe’ effect can be hard to visualize, so here are 2 examples in Anime you can watch for reference!
One Punch Man OP:
Death Note Potato Chip:
#satsuma_pdf
If you want to google a Japanese term but aren’t sure if the search result will be relevant, try adding these:
原画とは - とは gives explanations about (Genga)
原画と作画の違い - と and の違いgive resulting explanations about the differences between (Genga) and (Sakuga)
You can purchase Retas Studio through the CSP website!
Retas Studio is a bundle of 4 softwares including Paintman, which is used in the Anime Industry to color in Cels!
The price is 30,000 Yen outright, or 500 Yen/month!
Link (scroll to the bottom):
A few more tips for googling Japanese terms:
[term] 英語 - gives an English translation result for [term]
“[term]” - quotations around [term] only gives results that include it
[term] 読み方 - will give the hiragana reading for [term]
Blender Market is celebrating 10 years on the net with a *free* download of Auto-Rig Pro!

Every time I make a post here, I have to fight the character limit. I don’t plan on paying monthly, and I don’t want to post a screenshot of something typed up because then the auto-translate feature won’t work.
Should I try making videos? Those take a lot of work though… 🤔
