A Student's Submission from the Second High School of Chenzhou (CHINA) " The "arms race" of study hours has become the norm in Chenzhou, a fourth-tier city. Waking up at 6 a.m., I step out into the nearly freezing cold wind and catch the first bus, closing my eyes to make up for the lack of sleep. Forty-five minutes later, I arrive at the misty Suxianling Square. Despite being called the "Eighteenth Blessed Land of the World," the square is now filled with a crowd of students in monotonous school uniforms, lined up like cattle waiting to be slaughtered, passing through the gates one by one—this is the scene every morning at our school. Entering the campus, despite the large number of students, it is eerily quiet. There are no sounds of laughter or playful banter, and even the voice of the teacher reading aloud during morning study sounds hopeless, tinged with a sense of despair. “Survival of the fittest, pursuit of excellence”—this is the school motto of Chenzhou No. 2 High School. Social Darwinism has been implemented thoroughly in this so-called "key school." The weak must be eliminated, and the so-called "strong" in the realm of test-takers are the new generation of prime, high-quality "cattle." After all, according to the logic of those in charge, even Social Darwinism is "socialism." At noon, enduring the disgust of picking stray hairs from the mystery meat in the cafeteria, I eat my meal while holding a textbook, chewing the food as if it were wax, and then rush back to class. The school leadership is smart when it comes to making money—they don’t force students to stay on campus for meals but manage to shorten lunch break time enough to make it almost mandatory for us to eat in the cafeteria. In the evening, the homework piles up like mountains, and sometimes, teachers give extra lessons. At 10 p.m., the stars twinkle outside the window, and the lights of a thousand households are shining. Yet, these lights have nothing to do with us, who are stuck here from Monday to Sunday. We cannot feel the bustling energy of the night market; "lying flat" is considered a crime, and rest is shameful. We can only hide our MP3 players—an almost obsolete device—in the hope that they provide some comfort. Another half hour passes, and we leave the classroom, walk through two gates, and end another exhausting day in the darkness. With one-quarter of our time off each week, plus the wasted commuting time, we rarely get to eat the meals our families prepare for us. A quick shower, a lazy sleep, and the day is gone. The official holidays are exchanged at a "1/5 rate" in the school, a common knowledge in our school. After the upcoming "100-day pledge ceremony," things will get even worse. The countdown on the wall—“XX days until the college entrance exam”—acts like a death knell. These simple numbers can control the lives of students like puppets. The bloodshed caused by the heavy pressure and the lives lost are just "reasonable losses" under the school's obsession with high graduation rates—self-punishment and a toast of three drinks, and it's over. In the midst of this endless torment, students have lost the will to resist. Yet, even if they harm themselves, they are mocked and used as examples of what not to do. I have seen graffiti in the school bathroom stalls that reads "Liberty or Death" and "Never Forget 6/4." I know that not all are sinking into this terrifying system. I can say with certainty that the VPN coverage rate in our grade has exceeded 30%. We have our own ideals, our own hobbies. We love freedom, we pursue reason. I cannot bear to see these lives numbed, compromised, and becoming the next generation of "cattle" or "human mining" under the relentless pressure. I hope to use your influence to change this situation and hope that everyone can awaken, so that humanitarianism and universal values can shine into the corners of this fourth-tier city. Long live freedom, and may democracy never die. "
