In 1964 Mississippi elected their first republican in the US house since 1882. Incumbent democrat, Arthur Winstead lost re-election by a surprising 10 points. Prentiss Walker's victory was made possible for two reasons. First was white Mississippian's anger at the national democratic party for passing the civil rights act, which pushed many registered dems to vote for Republican presidential candidate, Barry Goldwater who won the district with 93% of the vote.
