There's a proposal to build 115 dwellings near me on the green belt. I just responded to the consultation with the words "I'm all in favour of this proposal. If anything, there's too much green belt in St Albans."

That is such a monumentally bad idea, especially from a human rights lawyer. Do that and every tinpot dictator will use Britain as an example to clamp down on free speech at the slightest whiff of dissent.
I'm British but these are the things I find weird since moving here as a child:
* Worshipping the NHS
* Boasting about being bad at maths (and then throwing tantrums when the PM wants to fix it)
* Not building homes or infrastructure
* Being ashamed of the Empire

Against both Japan and Germany, the US was unequivocally the good guy. I love Japan and what it has become post-WW2 (especially thanks to Abe Shinzo) but my granddad lived under Japanese rule in Shanghai. Horrible. The bomb was undoubtedly the right course of action in the circs.
This is misleading on so many levels.
1. Ignores the invasion of Israel by 6 neighbouring Arab states.
2. From 1949-1967, there was no "Palestinian" land. The West Bank was part of Jordan. Gaza was occupied by Egypt.
3. From 1967-82, Israel occupied the Sinai and gave it back
They never show you this map on the news. That's because it provides the crucial context necessary to anyone wanting to understand the Israel/Palestine situation.
@Glostermeteor
It's just a healthcare system and the reverence just stops it improving. It does good things as well as bad but I will never understand the mentality of thinking it's the envy of the world while also being on the brink of collapse.

Malta. Hong Kong would have stayed British had it voted in 1997. A subdivision of Kenya wanted to. Newfoundland did. Bermuda rejected independence. Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands overwhelmingly voted to remain British.
Watching Clarkson's Farm. How on earth did we become a nation of petty bureaucrats and miserly jealous killjoys? Like seriously, who spends money employing a barrister to stop his neighbour doing something good for his community?

Intimidating a 14yo child for dropping a book is not "peaceful".
My family fled a country where "defending the honour of the Quran" (mob rule on trumped up blasphemy charges) is more important than tolerance and having a sense of perspective. You're welcome to take their place.
@AndrewPRLevi
What is the purpose of stuff like this? It's one image taken out of context. The commentary only does to do the country down. I'm all for free speech and your right to say it (why else support Ukraine?) but what good comes from the commentary here?
@FreddieBailey96
Because Andrew served and risked his life in the Falkland Islands (so there is some lingering respect although most people think he's a creep) whereas Markle has made defamatory allegations towards the Royal Family.
๐Rishi Sunak says he is (now) registered with an NHS GP.
He adds he has used independent healthcare in the past.
โI am proud to have come from an NHS family, and thatโs why Iโm passionately committed to defending it with more doctors more nurses and more funding.โ
My grandparents were ejected from their homes in Pakistan yet I don't call Pakistan an illegitimate country and demand its annihilation. Yet when it comes to the only Jewish state, people gladly call for its eradication. Go figure.
This is completely spot on by Brendan O'Neill
"How can you assert the civilisational authority of Western values when your entire educational and university system is devoted to questioning and demeaning Western civilisation?"
@tomhfh
On the contrary it is very unreasonable for you to ask that. It's easy for you to say that when you don't have family members or property in Russia that would be at risk of being arrested, tortured, stolen or injured.
@ReemAmirIbrahim
Actually they presented the same vision of conservatism but had different sequencing. Rishi wanted to do the hard stuff first because inflation is utterly awful whereas Liz just wanted to do the easy stuff and told people what they wanted to hear and divorced it from reality
When my family and I first visited England in 1998 the first three weeks were spent in the Cotswolds, Cornwall and the Yorkshire Dales.
That holiday made me want to move to England which my family did 3 years later, in part because the people in the countryside were wonderful.
I actually love the fact that the attendees at the NatCons are going to have to rely on their freedom of expression and assembly rights as provided in the European Convention on Human Rights, which they decry...

Opposing the glorification of a terror organisation, or parroting said terror organisation's lines, is not the same as supporting the National Front.
And the chant "From the River to the Sea..." is calling for the ethnic cleansing of Jews from a certain part of the Middle East.
This is bang out of order.
Not only because he's the best pundit on MOTD but he has a non-political role (so no need to be impartial) and commented in a personal capacity off air.
Either we live in a free country where people can voice their legitimate opinions or we don't.
I'm all for scrapping bad or restrictive EU laws but the Retained EU Law Bill is bonkers. If passed, it would cause more havoc than Truss' mini budget.
Brexiteer Tory MPs cannot understand why the Government has done this.
They point out that not a single Tory MP voted against the REUL ill at the Second or Third Reading.
Two Tories tell me they think the U-turn is part of a deal with the EU for agreeing the Windsor Framework.
@PaulHowey1
Your mortgage was subsidised by the taxpayer, your house price was likely 2-3ร your salary rather than 8-14ร today, your elders weren't blocking houses being built.
@Lucius_Winslow
You don't need to go as far as Singapore for that.
In Guernsey people regularly leave their phones and wallets unattended at the bar in pubs, their front doors unlocked and I even left a spare set of house keys in my unlocked car in case I ever needed it.
@emilyhewertson
I'm more proud to be British than I am English (which makes sense since I'm from a former British colony). That said, Orwell was right about the type of people who are less embarrassed to steal from the poor box than sing God Save the King
The best thing about today is seeing how far we've come. When I moved to Britain, my parents' house was egged, they got intimidating and racist phone calls in the middle of the night, I was called a Paki at school and mocked for my Hindu faith. Today we have our first Asian PM.
The need for the proposed Abingdon mega-reservoir is far from proven, and the environmental impacts of such a project don't seem to have been accounted for.
This project must be halted, immediately.
White privilege is growing up in the West, with all the benefits of freedom and democracy, and parroting anti-Western lines from gangsterish dictatorships
@JMPSimor
Sorry Jessica but that's unfair. We're arming and training the Ukrainians to the teeth to ensure that they don't stay refugees for long. Also, security is a fair concern that worries the gov about even my own immigrant group given the regimes people flee from have long tentacles
There is no better example of delivering infrastructure for new homes than at Houlton in Rugby, where a new access road, a primary & secondary school are already open. GP facilities are now needed, which is why today I asked

to ensure this vital provision comes forward.
I love the underlying assumption of this tweet: Hamas, a group of radical Islamist militants who execute gay people in a place where 93% oppose homosexuality, would legalise gay marriage but for the damned Brits (who left 75 years ago).
Oh, and by the way, it wasn't actually Hamas who introduced the law banning homosexuality in Gaza.
Guess who it was?
The British Empire.
"Same-sex sexual activity is prohibited in Gaza under the British Mandate Criminal Code Ordinance 1936."

The response to Sturgeon's resignation isn't misogynistic. She's been more divisive than Farage, as much a charlatan as Johnson and more useless than Sadiq Khan.
Interestingly, in a discussion of women being treated poorly there's no mention of Theresa May or Liz Truss.
My Nani passed away today, the last of my grandparents. I was closest to this her but I wish I'd spent more time with her (and the other three) learning about her incredible life in wartime Gibraltar and Tangier, British Sindh, India, Ghana. I'm glad she's at peace now.

I'm voting Tory at the next general election. They're the only people to support house building in St Albans. It took 2 years for this to be approved, in part because the LibDem council has been so slow in approving planning and it's MP is against growth.
@Conservatives
St Albans MP Daisy Cooper has slammed a government decision to allow developments on Green Belt land at Chiswell Green Lane, near Chiswell Green. ๐ Full story
Green belt land is extremely precious in the UK.
Weโve seen too many examples of local councils circumventing the views of residents by taking land out of the green belt for development, but I will put a stop to it.

It's a shame that since the 1947 constitution, the Japanese Emperor is no longer commander in chief of the JSDF nor even the Head of State.
Inspiration of how *not* to run a nightlife policy. Transport is not sufficient after hours and it took several legal battles for Greggs to sell sausage rolls after 11pm.
London is leading the world in its 24-hour policy with other global cities looking to us for inspiration.
London's Night Czar spoke earlier about her role, championing the nighttime economy and representing 1.3m workers.

What a ludicrous statement. What do you think goes on at the Garrick?
And should a female judge who is a member of the WI or the UWC recuse themselves from cases involving discrimination against men?
@WonPeople
Hard to define "foreign" when I'm a foreigner! But the one place I found hard to relate to was Cambodia. Everywhere else I've been to in SE Asia I have been able to compare to UK, HK, India or a combination of all three. Cambodia was the outlier.

Not in Labour, but it isn't sexist. It's a take on a pretty common meme to explain Labourโs policy and it's a pretty good one.
Disgraceful from South Africa for ditching their U19 captain for, essentially, being Jewish.
Jewish South Africans like Harry Schwarz, Denis Goldberg and Denis Oppenheimer played a huge role in the struggle against Apartheid. Shame they're being forgotten here.
David Teeger stood down as South Africa's U19 Captain with CSA anticipating protests at the tournament.
This is a complex story which reflects many issues in South African society from freedom of speech to the pro-Palestine sentiment.

Serious question (I'm a corporate lawyer not a litigator): in those cases how do you give a defendant a fair trial if you don't cross-examine the complainant?
@Bushra1Shaikh
When my coreligionists are at fault (eg stoking tensions in Leicester last year) I vigorously condemn them. I'd expect others to act the same way. If there were allegations of Hindus attacking Muslim kids I'm sure you wouldn't laugh it off like you are here.
There should be some kind of punishment for localities that continue to block any form of housing.
If they don't want houses, give them a nuclear power plant instead.

No, it's a question of professionalism on the job. If he wants to attend a Palestine march and operates within the law, good luck to him. Spreading it on the public PA system at work is not and should not be permitted.

Calling for jihad in the streets of London isn't lawful free expression. And nobody (other than some protestors from Saturday) claims that Hamas' ethnic cleansing or war crimes are good
