The word is out! My book 'Between Community and Collaboration' (
@CambridgeUP
) received the Yad Vashem International Book Prize for Holocaust Research. I feel extremely honoured & am in very good company. More info:
Vandaag denkt Nederland de Holocaust. Binnenkort zou ik een lezing over de
#Holocaust
in Nederland geven aan de
@HU_Utrecht
[1/2] This is Juliette Stern. A brave woman. During
#WW2
, she used her position in the French “Jewish Council” to clandestinely transfer Jewish children to non-Jewish families. She continued after the Gestapo suspected her. At great risk. Over 1,000 children were saved…

My forthcoming
@CambridgeUP
book 📕 has a cover! Very happy with the result, and with the endorsements/reviews by wonderful and inspiring colleagues. For pre-order and more info:
[1/5] Publication day! My author copies have not yet arrived, but I’m still excited. A🧵on what my book roughly is about. It's a comparative study of the 'Jewish Councils' in the Netherlands🇳🇱, Belgium🇧🇪 and France🇫🇷 during
#WW2
.👉🏼 Why a comparative study?
1/2 Visited the “Jewish ghetto” in
#Venice
. Most stolpersteine were of Jews who died after the liberation of
#Auschwitz
. A clear reminder that the
#Holocaust
did not stop with the liberation of the camps….
What a splendid day to start my course “Topics in Holocaust Studies”. Gotta love teaching at
@UvA_Amsterdam
. The course is part of the MA programme Holocaust and Genocide Studies, offered at
@NIODamsterdam
#teaching
Today is book launch day at
@NIODamsterdam
! I spoke with
@nrc
about my work on the Jewish Councils, the
#controversy
that still surrounds this topic (esp. in 🇳🇱), and how a comparative approach leads to a better understanding 👉🏼
Gisteren sprak ik op
#Holocaust
Memorial Day in Uden.
@NIODamsterdam
This just arrived in my mailbox 📫 So happy to see this article finally in print. Pm me if you’re interested in reading the article ✉️ ! Also noticed that an edited volume I published an article (“If this is a woman”) was reviewed very nicely in the very same issue.

Expert meeting of the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure (EHRI). The start of the establishment of Dutch hub 🇳🇱of the project. Exciting programme, with talks about Digital Humanities AI and Big Data & Holocaust research.

What a great talk Anne van Mourik and I just had with
@ankahajkova
about her latest book. It will be part of the

podcast series (more info soon). Great appetiser for the

event tonight.

I co-authored a “preliminary findings” report on the role of the Dutch railways during
#WW2
and its responsibility for the deportation of
#Jews
and other groups. The
#railways
(Nederlandse Spoorwegen) will now fund a large research project on this topic. 👉🏼

[1/4] YAY! Beyond excited to share that I was awarded a
@NWO
VENI grant for my new research project INTERMARRIAGE AND FAMILY. Can't wait to share new research findings on this topic the coming years. Short summary: ‘Intermarried’ couples and their families...
Just found this in my mailbox. Excited to see the article I wrote on
#female
involvement in the
#Jewish
Councils of the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and France 🇫🇷 published. Congrats to the editors!
[1/4] Not surprised. Financing
#education
, and especially a PhD, is becoming very hard. And this is a major problem. Not least because it will further hamper a diverse academic landscape. A short 🧵(as a

The suggestion that dying of throat cancer would be Van den Bergh’s price to pay for his supposed betrayal of the Frank family is wrong on so many levels 🤯. Just reread this section of the cold case

betrayal book. Will talk about this project with my students today.

Fantastic “coffee lecture” by
@CourtmanNick
on the post-war naturalisation of Dutch Waffen-SS soldiers in West-Germany
@NIODamsterdam
. Fascinating how naturalisation requirements for convicted Nazis and their collaborators were systematically easened.
Our students meet Patrick Debois at
@NIODamsterdam
this morning. He will give the
#Auschwitz
Never Again lecture today. All the more important after
@ClaimsCon
’s report that there is an alarming lack of knowledge about the
#holocaust
in the Netherlands🇳🇱 👉🏼
Start of the
#intermarriage
workshop
@HolocaustMuseum
. Great discussions about “relationships in the making”, social dependencies, racial thinking, radicalisation in Nazi-occupied Netherlands and so much more. Now
@L_Marhoefer
with a great paper on “interracial” gay couples.
Session 1 of our seminar on “Jewish Councils” at
#LessonsandLegacies
is done. We talked about transnational exchanges between Councils, “knowledge” of “the East” and so much more🙏🏼 On to the next session!

Pretty sensational: The Dutch prime minister publicly apologized for the first time for the role of the Dutch government and authorities during the

. A very important statement during the National Holocaust Commemoration.

Very proud that two of our current (!) MA students in Holocaust and Genocide Studies got their first articles published. Even more exciting is that our former student (and current PhD at

co-edited the volume👇🏼

Today is

Memorial Day. Thinking of this group of children. Only the girl in the middle (white dress), Felice Polak, survived the war. Some were deported to

shortly after the 📸 was taken in Sept. 1942. Others were deported later.

"Reflecting on Evelien’s life and legacy leads us to ask how best we can develop and sustain a community of scholars who model their behavior on kindness and acceptance." A meaningful read on this sombre Sunday morning.

Interesting article by Wolf Grüner: “This is but one example of how scholars desperately need the public’s help to recover the stories of countless unidentified victims of the Nazis.” Also relevant to

Guess the climb was worth it - what a view of Montréal. Reality is even better. Flying ✈️ back home today after a fantastic conference
#LessonsandLegacies
. Was great to meet old friends and make new ones. Thanks
@JenniferVEvans
and others for organising.
@HEF_NU
1/2 My article for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is (finally!) available
@OUPAcademic
. It compares Jewish Council leaders' decisions. Why did the Dutch🇳🇱 leadership decide to remain in place while the Belgian🇧🇪chairman resigned?👇
[2/2]…I write about Stern, and other female members of the “Jewish Councils” in Western Europe in ch. 5 of my book “Between Community and Collaboration” and my article in the volume “If This is A Woman”. See: .
#InternationalWomenDay
Last week I came back from Paris 🇫🇷 after a month at
@Shoah_Memorial
. Found tons of fascinating docs, enjoyed the convo’s with colleagues, and feel immensely excited about my “mixed” marriages project. Still much to uncover on this topic (in W-European
#Holocaust
historiography)
@ztsamudzi
I am quite flabbergasted by “had to be understood as an exclusion of a black woman”. It IS the exclusion of a black woman. It’s not a matter of interpretation.
That feeling when you find documents you could only hope existed…❤️ Having a great day at the

Compelling lecture by Dan Michman for the MA students "

To my astonishment, I found out that little was known about the Belgian “Judenrat” chairman, Salomon Ullmann. His story led me through numerous archives. One of the remarkable things is that he stepped down from the Council, but remained Chief Rabbi and survived. Interested?👇🏼
Great discussions with my

museums, the Farhud pogrom, Wendy Lower’s latest book, and so much more.

As a counter to the negative sides to

that are often highlighted: I asked

My first time as a

[1/2] What a splendid day for a first (!) time ever in
#Warsaw
. So many thoughts on the memorial landscape of the city. Most striking: how the former ghetto site has become a “non-place”, indeed a lieu de mémoire without the lieu….
1/2 Conspiracy theorist David

cannot enter the Netherlands. A very good move by the Dutch immigration service. Icke claims that humanity is ruled by a cabal of reptiles appearing as humans. His

Wonderful location for “Nacht van de Geschiedenis” - an evening/night full of talks and discussions by (and with!) historians. This year’s theme:

#genocide
, climate change and many other themes.

Reading this fascinating and very well-written book in “preparation” for my talk at the Wiener Library next month. Starts with a very powerful quote by Alfred Wiener “I’m prepared to forget, as long as everyone else remembers.”
#Holocaust
@wienerlibrary
On 13 February, I will have a virtual talk about my book on
#Jewish
Councils during
#WW2
📕 at the Wiener Library. Can’t wait to exchange thoughts with brilliant
@ankahajkova
. Registration for this event (mandatory) via 👇🏼spread the word!
There's still time to register for our online book talk with
@LaurienVastenh1
&
@ankahajkova
on Between Community and Collaboration, the first comprehensive, comparative study of ‘Jewish Councils’ in the Netherlands, Belgium & France during Nazi rule...
In these particularly difficult times, it was great to see many dear friends and colleagues again at the “Lessons & Legacies”
@HEF_NU
conference. Of course, our dear Israeli colleagues were greatly missed. Apart from our own panel on ‘Contested Intimacies’, I had the privilege…
Can't wait to visit the
@wienerlibrary
again for my talk on the Dutch 'paradox'. It's part of a series of events that marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of this remarkable library. 11 October 6:30 pm in London it is! 👉
On my way to 🇨🇦 for the bi-annual

conference
@HEF_NU
. I will host seminars on
#Jewish
Councils in Nazi-occupied Europe, the Soviet Union and North-Africa. The papers are very promising. Can’t wait to start the discussion.

Today we had a fantastic “coffee lecture” on
#Jews
and
#Roma
in French internment camps by
@DijkstraClara
, current fellow at
@NIODamsterdam
. On family networks, the permeability of camp boundaries and agency of the victims. Great also to see her references to
@ankahajkova
’s work!
Attending this great talk by
@nina_siegal
on her must-read book “The Diary Keepers”. It’s based on 7
#WW2
diaries that have been preserved at
@NIODamsterdam
. Good to see that this unique collection (2100 wartime diaries!) is recognised this way.
It was great speaking at the
@wienerlibrary
last week. I argued, among other things, that the persistent focus on the different murder % of Jews in W-Europe during the
#Holocaust
has led to oversimplification. Catching up with fantastic colleagues was ❤️. Until next time! 🇬🇧
A fully packed room, some laughter and already great questions and themes to think about. A wonderful start of

Jewish city history.

In January, a 'Cold Case Team' accused a Jewish notary of the

betrayal. On 22 March, based on (archival) research, we will present a detailed report refuting their main arguments. Thanks to

After a weekend full of horrific news, stories and videos it feels odd to “just” start a new workweek. So many friends and colleagues in

who know at least someone either kidnapped, missing, or murdered. The impact of this terrorist attack cannot be underestimated.
Maria Ferenc talks about information, rumours and fake letters in the

after deportation. About the hope to survive and the fear to die.
