Great coverage from @theprojecttv last night on @choiceaustralia's investigation into the use of facial recognition by major Australian venues. @HTI_UTS has developed an FRT model law which would safeguard Australians from harm while supporting responsible use of the tech.
A new investigation has revealed that we're being tracked with facial recognitions at major venues, raising concerns about where that data is stored and what that means for everyday Aussies.

I don't want to live in a society where everyone is constantly treated like a criminal suspect. This @choiceaustralia investigation led by @KateABower uncovers the growing use of unregulated facial recognition by venues across the country. Australia needs FRT laws now.
Facial recognition technology is being deployed at major concert venues and sporting events around Australia, often without consumers' knowledge or consent. Read the full investigation here:

Thank you @TUNSW for sharing our story. All of the costs of no-grounds evictions are borne by the renters - aka the people with less power and stability. There needs to be consequences for landlords and agents who evict tenants on the basis of lies and deceit.
Lauren and her partner Jason have been renting together in Sydney since 2016 and have been in their current rental since April 2023. This follows two no grounds eviction notices in two years. Read Lauren's story:

Implementing an Indigenous Voice to Parliament will not undermine foundational human rights principles. On the contrary, the Voice provides a mechanism to improve rights & outcomes for First Nations peoples. @esantow & 4 other former human rights commissioners believe the same.
Lorraine Finlay claims the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament would undermine human rights. This is wrong. I've joined with four other former Human Rights Commissioners to affirm that an Indigenous Voice to Parliament would uphold human rights.

So many of the most vulnerable people in our community are in prisons, youth detention centres, immigration detention, hospitals, mental health facilities and aged care facilities. They deserve dignity and human rights. They deserve better than this from Australia. #OPCAT
The UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture has taken the extraordinary step of terminating its inspections in Australia. Australia's Human Rights Commissioner @lorrainejfinlay calls the decision "disappointing but not undeserved." Read more:

Pleased to see the Fed #PrivacyActReview refers positively to the @HTI_UTS Facial Recognition Model Law, acknowledging the need to strengthen legal guardrails for high-risk technologies like FRT and other biometric tech.

Empowering speech from @HTI_UTS co-founder, @nickdavis97 on why we have established the Human Technology Institute dedicated to building a future that applies human values to new tech. @UTSSocialImpact
'The recent pandemic demonstrated that as humans we all share critical vulnerabilities which is why it is more important than ever to consider the value and rules we choose to shape technology design — one that places humanity at its core.' @nickdavis97

Facial recognition tech can be used for both good and ill, so neither outright bans nor a free-for-all approach are a good way forward. Our piece in @ConversationEDU today explores a new model law for facial recognition developed by @esantow, @nickdavis97 & myself at @HTI_UTS
Facial recognition technology has set us on a path to mass surveillance – but it’s not too late to change course. @NickDavis97, @ESantow + @LaurenEWPerry (@UTSEngage) suggest an outline for governments to adopt to regulate uses of facial recognition.

Facial recognition is transforming our society. @HTI_UTS has developed a model law which would safeguard Australians from the risks of facial recognition while fostering positive innovation. Delighted to have co-authored this report alongside Profs @esantow and @nickdavis97.
As facial recognition is rolled out in shopping centres, workplaces & homes, we’re sleepwalking towards mass surveillance. Our Facial Recognition Model Law Report is a reform roadmap to improve #privacy protections, while enabling positive innovation
