It’s not just an education thing. Even the nurses did stuff like that when changing wound dressings. And then folks act shocked when patients get C. Diff or something and fly into a theatrical frenzy of extreme, theatrical anti-contamination measures.

And in the nursing home, they’d take the package of wipes or tube of cream they’d just used—which they’d had to touch with dirty gloves—and PUT THEM ON THE TABLE SHE HAD TO EAT ON.

I’d hoped that was an exception, but when Gran went into the hospital and then into a nursing home, I saw that it was routine practice. Medical staff think of gloves as only being there to protect them, but they’re also to protect other people.

I remember the owner of the piercing studio I worked at telling me abt visiting his mom in the hospital & having to make the aide change her gloves between emptying the catheter bag & touching ANYTHING else. Any decent piercer would lose their fucking mind if they saw that shit.

It was an important lesson in advocacy. I don’t think we should make students fix the problems that hurt them. it’s not their job. Their job is school.

…it does seem especially hypocritical that the wife of a disabled WWII veteran, who came up from extreme poverty and raised three children while caring for her husband, would be assessed as owing $49K to Medicaid after her death for two years of substandard medical care.
