More than happy to share this: a special issue on Fanon in MENA, resulting from a workshop in Tunis last year I attended with great scholars/colleagues. My piece is a comparative reading of Fanon & Mahdi Amel. Please share widely 🙏🏼
If you couldn't imagine how rotten the German public discourse is. The reactions on a mainstream journal putting a Palestinian woman on the cover: this is a green party politician...👇🏼
The original cover quotes "I don't think it is correct to only focus on 7 October". The adapted cover reads "I don't think it's right to only focus on the Shoah". The equation of Palestinians with Nazis should be investigated under criminal law.
A lot of ppl supposedly standing on the left have forgotten about Iran's repression against its own citizens & non-persian ethnic groups in Iran; their role in Syria; their role in Iraq.
Anti-Imperialism of the fools.
@ABaerbock
I really don't get this whole "Germany is embarrassing itself rn" talk. As if that - how the rest of the world looks at G - would be the problem here. Couldn't care less about the state's image. Start thinking about material relations of oppression and exploitation instead.
We can now watch the German government's interpretation of jin jiyan azadi turning into practice: deporting Kurdish women (a minor and an elderly) to Iran
Never forget. It took half a year of actively contributing to today's situation, which is now called "the hell that Gaza is" (Baerbock), to finally support a temporary (!) ceasefire...
This is what Germany's "feminist foreign policy" looks like: rejecting a humanitarian ceasefire. No surprise that the Berlin think-tank
@feministfp
didn't say a word since 7th October...
In 1977, the Lebanese communist journal al-Tariq organized a symposium on the question of "The development of Marxist thought between the logic of unity and specificity". Participants of the debate are, among others, Husayn Muruwwah & Mahdi Amel (both got assassinated in 1987)
Finally got this one: Ilham Khuri-Makdisi's The Eastern Mediterranean and the Making of Global Radicalism (2010). The reviews of and references to this work have been great so far. I mean...just look at that table of contents. I'll probably start reading with chapter 5
Anyone interested in Marxist critiques of Said's Orientalism should read Gilbert Achcar's concise treatment of this debate. For a more in-depth text, see Sing/Younes, or the excerpts in English translation of Mahdi Amil's
Some major announcements from the University of Rojava
@RojavaUniv
I am so happy and incredibly proud to announce the establishment of the University of Rojava Press. The first book that we decided to publish is “the Wretched of the Earth” by the one and only Frantz Fanon. 1
I'm off to Tunis for two days of discussing Frantz Fanon's legacy and relevance today. Looking fwd to meeting some great scholars and colleagues.

If your idea of anti-imperialism includes proto fascist states that both suppress emancipatory & liberation movements inside their own country and attack, dominate, and colonize others (looking at Turkey and Iran), then your politics is deeply flawed
An eyewitness sent me this video taken yesterday while travelling from Berlin to Gambia. He shared the plane with three German police officers who are in the video deporting a young Senegalese man. According to the eyewitness, the young Senegalese had been

For International Workers' Day, Fanon reminds us how the struggle for decolonisation always has to be structurally linked to the struggle against capitalist exploitation.
Excerpts from Bashir Abu-Manneh's amazing article "Who owns Frantz Fanon's Legacy?"
In 1977, the Lebanese communist journal al-Tariq organized a symposium on the question of "The development of Marxist thought between the logic of unity and specificity". Participants of the debate are, among others, Husayn Muruwwah & Mahdi Amel (both got assassinated in 1987)
I'm not easily impressed by academic talks, but listening to Avi Shlaim & Raja Shehadeh was kind of an inspiring experience. Really looking fwd to reading "Three Worlds"

@ZDF
Richtig schlimme Sendung. Alleine das Ende als der Moderator mit leuchtenden Augen sagt, man könnte dann sogar eine Universität in Gaza bauen...well, vielleicht hätten man nicht alle zerstören sollen in the first place...
No offense, but this statement is really ignorant. What about decades of scholarship & Fanon studies on which Shatz, like any other author, builds in his own writing? It can never be "only one person" to trust. Who owns the legacy of Fanon?
Amilcar Cabral on solidarity between the European left & working classes, and national liberation movements

Shame on you Germany
A right-wing Israeli mob came to my family’s home yesterday to search for me, threatening close family members who fled to another town in the middle of the night. I am still getting death threats and had to cancel my flight home. This happened after Israeli media and German

Handbook on Marxism and Post-Marxism (2021) is a great & concise introduction to Marxist theory and political movements in colonial contexts; comparing the cases of South Africa & Algeria. Highly recommended

Remembering Halabja, 16 March 1988. Remembering also means working towards a present & future in which all relations and conditions enabling genocidal violence will ultimately be abolished.

Today I listened to

. The audience (mostly over 50 years old & white) was so supportive and empathetic. You immediately feel the difference when you're outside of Germany...
Listen to this Rojava University lecture by H. Bozarslan on the state of violence in the middle east. A good example of how one can think about Palestine & Kurdistan at the same time. Great moderation by
@rosaburc
It was a pleasure to listen to and moderate dear Prof. Hamit Bozarslan’s illuminating lecture on anti-democracy and wars of de-civilisation in the 21st century at today’s annual freedom lecture of the Rojava University. Thank you for inviting Sardar

Nein! Ach so. Ich schon. Aber erzähl gern weiter.
Looking fwd to teaching a postgrad class I developed for this summer semester, starting in April: "Past & Present of the Kurds in Syria & Iraq". This is my syllabus, can't wait to get into reading and hopefully have productive discussions with the students:

Ich dachte mit dem Bürgergeld sollte es weniger staatliche Disziplinierung und Sanktionierung von Menschen die keiner Lohnarbeit nachgehen (können) geben lol
@taraxrh
I hope you grieve as much for the thousands of victims of genocidal campaigns, mass deportations, and expropriations during the Saddam regime.
Addressing our colonial history is not just a matter of justice – it also makes us stronger. It’s the only way we can build global partnerships based on trust for security & peace: openly, honestly, with a willingness to reflect upon the past & inspire our actions for the future.
Interested in Fanon studies?
Some of the works I'm engaging with for my contribution to a Fanon themed workshop later this year. I'm particularly interested in Fanon's notion of "stretching Marxism" in the colonial context. Any further recommendations for readings on the subject?
Today's book: Sara Salem's Anticolonial Afterlives (2020)
@saramsalem

Interesting book, with a promising chapter on the revolutionary role of the "Lumpenproletariat" in the context of anti-colonial struggle as well as the black liberation movement in the US
As expected, following the

& antid. Hysterie gg. alles was "PoCo" ist sehe, dann bin ich full on im defensive & apologetic mode

Teaching Khalidi's "Palestinian Identity" this week. A remarkable chapter on early 20th C. formation of pal. national identity, with all its historical shifts and evolutions in that period.
"Let us recognise our intertwined destinies and forge a path towards true transnational feminist solidarity with our dear comrades in Palestine."
Read this powerful statement embodying a true sense of internationalist solidarity ✊🏼
"We've learned the lesson of resistance & solidarity against systems of oppression from those who take to the streets in Palestine under Israeli occupation, our comrades in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, & our Kurdish sisters in Rojava..."
Excited for all those accounts here that spent the last three months in denial (or worse) to now slightly shift their position, tame their tone, focus on other issues...hoping that no one will remember.
With all eyes on Rafah, don't forget that this has been going on for 8 months with impunity. The delayed shifts in discourse & policy won't save the West from its deeply entangled complicity in all of this. Germany is complicit.
