RIP Sir Roger Scruton. As kind as he was brilliant. He once let my daughter, aged 18months, rampage through his library, shushing my attempts to restrain her, and let her keep the book she swiped. He said children being drawn to books was a wonderful thing.
He said books are magical for children who aren't old enough to read, because they are full of secret messages they can't yet decode but one day will be able to unlock. No idea if he was speaking off the cuff or quoting someone I'm not smart enough to have read.
Praising God for the safe arrival of Beatrix Stokes, born 1st May. It was a tough birth but she was tougher still, and although we're still in hospital she's recovering well and we might get home tomorrow. The doctors, midwives, nurses and all the staff have been brilliant.
I'm going to spoil the ending and say this is a brilliant way of serving eggs to people who might otherwise struggle to afford a nutritious breakfast. A wonderful thread to start the day.
This is just basic collapse of a key function of the state isn't it? I cannot understand why this isn't front and centre of the public discussion, alongside cost of living.
It’s frustrating watching my phone travelling across London after I was mugged tonight and be told the police can’t do anything. Everything on my body hurts from the mugging, but what hurts most is knowing the person who did it is laughing, knowing the police won’t do anything
I'm always surprised how few cafés/restaurants/takeaways etc provide low carb options, especially at lunch. This isn't a whinge, I'm not expecting ppl to cater to my dietary whims, just seems a missed opportunity. Or maybe there are fewer low-carb folks than I think?
And very excited to be joining Defra as Senior Leader for Farming Sectors and Policy. Looking forward to getting to grips with dairy, livestock and horticulture policy at this crucial time!
A proud day for the family Stokes, as eldest daughter receives First Holy Communion in the veil her great grandmother wore to her own first Communion 87 years ago.
@rakibehsan
I found that moment on QT absolutely excruciating because she so clearly thought her 'Cameo' set up was so funny and then looked distraught that he just answered her. I sometimes wonder if these audience members think their target is going to melt like the witch of the west under
The comments on this story get worse every time I look at them. There are grown men dismissing
@FWAbiKay
's report as woke and irrelevant because it throws a spotlight on the culture of hyper sexualisation and even sexual assault among young farmers. Madness.

I spent time with a wildlife management professor in Hungary a few years ago as part of my Nuffield. He thought we Brits were woefully unprepared for the coming explosion in our boar population, and he was fascinated to watch it happen.
That was, however, 10+ years ago, and the

Not a partisan question so much as a process point: what are the criteria for securing this much public broadcaster airtime? Farage's absence, given the polling, does seem odd. Is it linked to recent electoral performance?
Last Mass of 2022, praying for Pope Benedict XVI. I was a lost and bewildered Anglican when he visited the UK in 2010. I was glued to the tele, it was like watching a banner being raised, a clarion call of clarity. Put me on the path to Catholicism and I'm so grateful.
I don't know if John Cleese revealing his SDP conference appearance on the Today program is the secret sauce, but the SDP as the vehicle for postliberalism would be poetic. Very Maurice "the old is the new".

It's brilliant and deeply Catholic that the English patron is a dragon slayer from what is now Turkey. Dragon-slaying is a profound symbolic act; vanquishing sin, death and evil. It's also very strange to our modern eyes, ergo is beautifully Catholic.
That our patron hails from
Tough to know whether to use this pic to underline the dragging of once-sensible charities like the RSPB (of whom CP is vice president) towards the extremist fringes, or to use it to illustrate what happens when the BBC grants "untouchable" status to its presenters.
Nadhim Zahawi - the new Chancellor of the Exchequer - is one of the finest British political stories.
Baghdad-born, fled to the UK during the early years of Saddam Hussein's rule.
Now he is in No11 after impressive work as Covid-19 vaccines minister and education secretary.
A post shared by my mum on behalf of my beloved grandfather who is so sad not to be publicly honouring the friends he lost. I have very early memories of him telling me this deeply moving story.

The population of the planet will have tripled in 100 years, but we have the same amount of productive land and 70% of it can only be farmed for livestock. Everyone involved in this debate needs to see
@GHGGuru
shred his business card to illustrate this point.
#yes2cattle
Reckon of our current crop of politicians, only Farage and
@georgegalloway
could achieve scenes even close to these.
Who else in recent memory could pull this off? Corbyn? Pre-COVID Boris?
@FrMatthewLC
I'm sure there are vastly more complex points of doctrine that are poorly understood, but in terms of significance and impact on practice, it's 100% the implications of receiving communion in a state of mortal sin.
Thanks to the fisherman who let my little lass watch him play and land a lovely common carp while we were out walking this afternoon. She hasn't stopped talking about wanting her own "fishing rope" and net so she can "catch a big fish like the fishing man".

Happy feast of Ss Peter and Paul, a feast celebrated on this day for at least 1760 years, a feast that unites East and West in shared ancient tradition.
What I heard at the
#Yes2Cattle
symposium: ruminants are essential to circular ag. Capping consumption is not necessary. Instead we need to innovate, to mitigate the "shadow" of ruminants so they can continue to upcycle inedible cellulose into nutrition for a growing population.
Pretty astounding letter in the Times today in support of the Latin Mass. Hot debate over which name will have the Agatha Christie effect on Pope Francis. I'm guessing he's a The Rest is History fan, so I reckon it just needs someone to explain it's THAT Tom Holland.

I don't know if the financial power of the Man City Empire can be overcome, at least while those 115 charges are quietly ignored, but Arteta is building the most exciting Rebel Alliance and like Odegaard I can't wait to see what this Arsenal team can do next season.
Being a mad old reactionary I tend to be very grumpy about rebrands, but this is so flipping wholesome, I'm here for it. Our little lass gets so much out of Rainbows.

Far from nerdiness, I've often argued that my 30 year-long Games Workshop fandom has always been an expression of British soft power projection.

VAR getting the second call right doesn't make up for this, it makes it worse. Onfield decisions would have given us one penalty from the two incidents, which is exactly what we should have had.

While a hobbit himself, Tolkien tells us hiding in the Shire isn't an option in a fallen world. Even attempting to return to nature will get you eaten by Old Man Willow. The Legendarium as a whole celebrates exploration, derring-do and the building of great cities.
The reaction of some Countryfile viewers to this evening's program is precisely why we need to work at making wild shot game meat a part of ordinary life. It's the quickest, easiest way to overcome any sense of disconnect.
It does feel like those seeking to ban things move swiftly onto the next ban, rather than monitoring the impacts of their previous lobbying. Obvs that's how campaigning and fundraising works, but is it how good conservation works?
Lots of public & political attention, inc from celebrities such as

Rendering postliberalism into understandable prose is a neglected part of the project, but here

manages it while still nailing an ingenious insight.
Just to flip the "hereditary monarchy" thing on its head, i spent much of today feeling that we Brits and Commonwealthers, whether born or adopted, are incredibly lucky to have inherited such a civilisation as this.

I think the expectation from my Hungarian colleague was that they would follow a similar path to muntjac, using motorway network as a form of habitat corridor to join up what woodland there is. Maybe he underestimated just how deforested we are.

There it is then folks, smoked pheasant. After 17 hours of brining and drying and about 4 hours of smoking and basting, it definitely earned its place next to the brisket and the biggest cajun chicken I've ever seen.
Pondering whether the general, meat-eating public are ready to hear that one of the virtues of wild game is that it avoids the trip to the abattoir. Or is that population likely to shudder at the very mention of life and death and not process the message?
This season the
@BritishGame
mission is to get the public thinking about eating game at home. That's why we worked with
@MacandWild
on grouse restaurant kits, and that's why I thought I'd best get one and have my first go at cooking grouse at home.
Little lass's birthday tomorrow, she's 3, and I've bought her first fishing rod (well, whip) because she's not stopped talking about it. Reckon I'm as excited about tomorrow as she is!

Very well coordinated campaign by

This is genuinely epic, with some top game content along the way. Turns out well-spiced medieval English grub was ditched from the national menu for being Papist, as was fish.
Note well how keen a certain BBC presenter is to attack

Assurance. They know every shoot and game farm that opts into assurance, every voice raised in support of shoot assurance in our community, is a threat to their agenda.
What an excellent story. Can attest to the healing power of fishing during life's rough times. Doubly effective when accompanied by a great friend, I found.
Was unsure how that

to answer those questions even while recognising the Beeb approach to the issue would be v sensationalist.
Anyone fancy spending similar time and money working out if there are any Blue Labour MPs hiding among the army of new Labour parliamentarians we're about to see? Any new Cruddas or Frank Fields? Any prolife Labour slipped through the net into winnable seats?
🚨🚨 SOME NEWS AND AN INVITATION 🚨🚨
Last week I confirmed I’d be voting for my local Tory MP John Glen because I see him as a model of duty, competence and a very traditional English sense of public service. In recent weeks eg he gripped the contaminated blood scandal like
Panda doing his civic duty. Also did my own good deed for the day, escorting an elderly lady I met along the way to the polling station. Really unsteady but bloody determined to go vote. So much respect for that.

Successful first fishing trip with little lass' birthday present! She caught a little roach on her whip, and she 'helped' land a couple of nice commons taken off the top.
