The score is not important. The big news here is that this is Dromard competing in hurling. A small but important milestone for hurling in Longford. 👏👏

Yep. Thousands of kids (who have terrific internet for Tiktok and online games) were somehow unable to access GAAGo on Saturday but could sit and watch Arsenal v Man United via a significantly more expensive Sky package yesterday. Some might have weak internet, but most don't. 🤷♂️
RIP Seamus Flynn. Winner of O’Byrne Cup & Gaelic Weekly Cup in ‘65, National League and NFL Division 2 in ‘66 and Leinster SFC in ‘68. Selected on Team of Millennium, he won 7 SFC’s with Clonguish (Captain in ‘68 & ‘72). Only Longford man to captain Leinster in Railway Cup (‘68).
Congrats to Colmcille's Declan Reilly who became only the 2nd person to win Longford GAA Senior Footballer of the Year award twice! When Declan last won the award in 2008, the current Colmcille senior team captain was just 6 years old!!!
@SeanMcGoldrick1
Graphed in absolute terms and per capita using latest population data on each county. Would be interesting to see a 'per membership' or 'per club' view.
40 years ago this weekend my brother and I stood in Croke Park for the first time on 17th June 1984 at the Leinster SFC QF replay of Longford v Offaly. 🧵…

Why? It is an amazing experience for the young lads who get the opportunity. A professional sport which could set you up for life versus an amateur sport which you play for the love of the game. I love the GAA but to rail against this is nuts.
Longford Club Championship hots up with action in SFC, IFC & JFC this weekend, it is worth noting that this year marks 45 years since Padraic O'Brien began reporting on sporting matters for the Longford Leader. His name is now synonymous with Gaelic Games reporting in Longford.
We re-watched the Mullinalaghta vs Carrickedmond game on Clubber and here is a summary of all scores by timestamp in each half. Mullinalaghta won it 2-12 to 2-11. Worth noting that 22:12 into second half an extra ghost point appears on the Clubber scoreboard for Carrickedmond.

Today’s NFL game vs London saw the most players ever from the Killoe Young Emmets club in Longford's starting XV, with seven Killoe lads starting today. Last time Killoe had so many starting for Longford in adult competition was when the club represented Longford in the 1908 JHC.
@moylesiea
That was tried. 2018 O’Byrne Cup semi between Longford and Meath went to free kicks and Meath won 2-1 in what can only be described as one of the most abysmal exhibitions of free kicks ever seen. Turns out tired legs and long range frees aren’t a good mix!
The Longford Slashers club was formed this week in 1954 (Monday 4th Jan 1954) when Whiterock Slashers and Longford Wanderers clubs united to form a new club. The 'Slashers' name is a nod to Cavan's Myles 'The Slasher' O'Reilly, a legendary Irish hero of the 17th century.
@willocallaghan
Longford has had just 3 adult hurling clubs for 20 years now. Can't raise more than 20 players from Longford clubs for county team this year. Big investment needed in grassroots hurling in Longford. The few are doing all the leg work. It's unfair and unsustainable.
Devastating news emerging from Tullamore this evening with the premature death of Alo Lawlor. A long time Tullamore GAA stalwart, he had a huge hurling passion. Won IHC and SHC B medals in 1989/'90, was a selector when Tullamore won SHC in 2009.A true gentle giant and a real gent
Wishing our followers and supporters of the Longford Gaelic Stats web archive a very Happy New Year and thank you for your support and feedback throughout 2023.
In March 1970 Longford played Clare in SF Challenge in Milltown Malbay. Longford could only muster 15 on the day. When John Smith (Mostrim) got injured there was no sub, so the County Board Chairman Liam Mulvihill (later DG of the GAA) was pressed into action as his replacement.
I challenge anyone to head over to the hurling sections of the Longford Gaelic Stats website and tell me that the game doesn't matter in Longford. I gained the utmost respect for hurling people in Longford when researching it.
Finally completed a history of Camogie in Longford (1934-2023). Includes little known achievements such as Longford reaching the Leinster Junior Championship final in 1963 and St. Brigids (Ardagh) winning the Leinster Club Junior title in 1958! Enjoy.
Longford are through to the O'Byrne Cup final for the 11th time overall and 4th time in the past 10 years, after a hard fought victory over Meath in Ashbourne tonight. 👏🎉
100 years old. Some achievement. Started out in Longford Park which was shared with Longford GAA until 1933 when the GAA moved to what is now Pearse Park. Best of luck in your 100th year.

To mark Féile weekend here is the first team from Longford to compete at the National Football Féile in Cavan in 1982 - Shannon Gaels from Rathcline. Team was trained by an up and coming manager called Denis Connerton. Féile was the brainchild of Granard native Fintan Tierney.

Did you know... Longford is the last county in Ireland to reach an All-Ireland Club final in GAA or LGFA or Camogie at any grade. All other Irish counties & Scotland & Lancashire had already reached a final, but not Longford. The Slashers ladies broke that ceiling for Longford.
That's our North & South Longford Hurling Hubs wrapped up for the Xmas. Massive thanks to all the coaches, parents and players for coming out & trying hurling for the first time!
Hopefully there are 2 new hurling clubs joining

An excerpt from local media in September 1923 when the local club game was at a particular low point with little in the way of competition and few teams active. The historical recall might not have been stellar but the passion and heart was clear.

70 years ago this month Whiterock Slashers invited Longford Wanderers to their AGM in the Temperance Hall in Longford town on 4th January 1954, where both clubs agreed to merge and form a new club called 'Longford Slashers'. And just like that a legendary club name was born!

Longford vs Down this weekend in Division 3. Played 8 times, Won 0. Never beaten Down, Armagh or Cork in NFL, so it's a big one to chase! The member of our stats team who is also Chair of Down County Board has been benched for this weeks stats 😜.

Not sure about ‘The Slashers’ though

I've been knee deep in a rake of GAA research recently and it has brought home to me the immense value of sports journalism especially in local newspapers. Those who report (from notes to articles) are doing a tremendous service to all those who follow later.
Tremendous news that the former HQ of Longford GAA from 1903 to 1933 (Longford Park, later the Greyhound Park) is to be revamped as a new public and sporting space. Well done to
