In light of recent events, I thought it would be timely to reshare this article with @jbpilet just published in Party Politics suggesting that mainstream parties via their behavior in campaigns can legitimize radical right parties (cf. CDU/AfD in Germany) 👇
Glad to see this study w @jbpilet out in Party Politics: using an experiment in Belgium, we show that signaling willingness by a mainstream party to rule with the radical right legitimizes the latter, while not granting an electoral advantage to the former

@jbpilet Zo tonen we empirisch aan dat de strategie van mainstream rechts om deur toe te doen voor radicaal-rechts (zoals N-VA deed in juni 2024 met VB) deze laatste stemmen kost, deur openzetten (zoals VVD deed met PVV) heeft legitimatie-effect + verhoogt electorale steun radicaal-rechts

@Vanhuffel_jan @jbpilet Dat had ik heel graag meegenomen in het experiment, maar was geen ruimte voor - al is mijn beste gok op dit moment dat het achterliggende mechanisme identiek zou moeten werken voor mainstream links & radicaal-links, ik hoop dit in follow-up studie te kunnen onderzoeken
