NEW STORY: Kshama Sawant is now likely to win re-election over Egan Orion, creating what one consultant called the "most progressive council in many years."
New: The King County Labor Council has given the Seattle Police Officers Guild an ultimatum: admit to and address racism in Seattle PD or members will vote to remove them.
The implications of the WA Supreme Court's "Blake" decision — striking down criminalization of drug possession — are absolutely dizzying. As one attorney told me, "we’re going to be saying before Blake and after Blake.”
A wild legal thing happening: DOJ just asked for a restraining order to halt Chief Best's directive banning officers from using pepper spray, tear gas, etc. — which she did because the council banned them. Basically, DOJ wants her to ignore the ordinance.
Good morning everyone. I have a bit of news about myself: I’m leaving Crosscut later this month to take a job covering transportation with The Seattle Times. I start Nov. 29. I’m feeling a lot of things, so indulge me a bit of a thread.
AG Bob Ferguson's hair has suddenly made me skeptical of any elected officials whose hair looks like they found a haircut somewhere. Bob showing solidarity.
Robert Champagne was filmed in KOMO's "Seattle is Dying" as the narrator spoke of "sick, tortured souls." Not surprisingly, his story is more complicated — and in many ways a success.
I'm not sure that people totally understand: Even if the Legislature passes a new law tomorrow, it can't be applied retroactively. The life of anyone who's ever faced a drug possession charge in WA has likely just changed.
NEW: Dr. Ben Danielson — the revered medical director of the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic — resigned in protest last month, accusing Seattle Children's Hospital of racism and indifference toward patients and staff of color.
This is quite stunning. Despite suspicions that Seattle could see a moderate backlash, the council now has a majority — and, depending on Dan Strauss, maybe a supermajority — of council members who support a head tax.
That's it: The Seattle Council has voted to override all three of Mayor Durkan's vetoes, meaning their original proposed cuts to SPD and the Nav Team and their new spending on community remain in place.
I played football when I was younger and all the coaches treated it like the military and then Pete Carroll comes along and wins championships while treating each dude as an individual. What a guy.
New: 5 Seattle police officers are now under investigation for possible involvement in DC insurrection. Crosscut has learned the name of one — Officer Jason Marchione.
During roll call of the
@SeattleCouncil
, members were taking "ay" votes over the phone except CM Morales who could be heard shouting "Don't make a mess in the garage."
Tried to RSVP and got rejected as "this event is a private fundraiser and is closed to the media." However, with seven of nine council members co-hosting, I think it is in the public interest to see what they're talking about!
East Coast media 🙋♂️ needs to pay close attention to West Coast impacts of coronavirus – like in Seattle – "already, in less than a month, society has contracted," the

People probably have strong feelings about this NY Times article, but I’m going to focus on: Can we please stop using the smell of weed as a device to paint a picture of a particular event? It smells like weed everywhere!
Out of 1M vaccinated people, WA has seen 102 "breakthrough" cases in the last two months, including 8 hospitalizations. For unvaccinated people, the average rate is about 120 per million every day. In other words, the vaccine is exactly as effective as advertised.
Good morning! Today is my first day as a transportation reporter for the
@seattletimes
. Tips? Ideas? My contact info is in my bio. It's all a bit heady to work for the paper my family subscribed to growing up, but here we are!
Also, my hot (cold?) take for the day: People from Seattle aren't "bad at driving in the snow." It's just hilly as hell and does not have the infrastructure to respond like your midwestern town. I've known lots of overly confident transplants who have slid down Capitol Hill.
City council just cancelled its morning briefing. I'll never understand why transplants from more snowy parts of the country make fun of Seattle on snow days. I personally love that we all agree to shut down the city and go sledding whenever possible.
Starting tonight at 7:30pm PDT we are offering video broadcasts and livestreams to share strength, comfort and unity with our community in Seattle and around the world as we confront the
#coronavirus
.
Schedule:
Tl;dr:
- Council bans tear gas, blast balls, etc.
- Chief Best, begrudgingly, gives the order to officers.
- DOJ asks federal judge to halt Best's order because they say it violates the consent decree.
"There is no city ordinance exception to the terms of the Consent
Decree."
Who Framed Roger Rabbit came up over the weekend so I watched it and I forgot that the villain’s sinister plot is to destroy public transit and build an 8-lane highway
The downstream effects are potentially enormous! For example: Someone charged with felony possession of a firearm, but their original felony was drug possession. Seems likely their case will be reviewed. And what about deportation? Or those who lost custody of their children?

today: "The CHOP grew to be this situation that we’re addressing right now because the police abandoned the east precinct. If neither the mayor nor the chief authorized leaving the east precinct building, who did?..."
I asked for a single document from the Seattle Police Department -- literally one page -- and this is their ETA for fulfilling my public records request. Out of control.
NEW: the President of Seattle Children's Research Institue, Dr. Jim Hendricks, has been forced to resign as part of the continuing fallout from Dr. Ben Danielson's recent protest. Story shortly.
After getting much of their own tear gas blown back at them last night, it looks like the feds went to the hardware store and got leaf blowers of their own.
I wrote 3,500 words about how Seattle's homeless shelters are totally overwhelmed by the level of illness among their clients. You have 23-year-old staff dealing with people who need nursing homes that don't exist.
I shit on Seattle all the time and then the moment someone who doesn’t live here says something like this I’m getting Space Needle tattoos across my chest
Programming note: I’m moving off of the transportation beat for the Times and taking over City Hall coverage. It’s been a few years so please, please send me tips, ideas, wild gossip.
Hi! I'm a little nervous to ask this, BUT: I'm interviewing Mayor Durkan on Sept. 16. What questions should I ask her? And please please please answer this tweet in good faith, otherwise I'm deleting it.
Seattle becomes the first city to pass a bill of rights for domestic workers, guaranteeing minimum wage, breaks and that workers keep their personal documentation.
