Got a new study out @CurrentBiology showing how sponges sneeze in slow motion to shed particulate waste. It’s open source! #nature #Science
Scientists discover that #sponges "sneeze" to dispose of unwanted debris, and the mucus produced serves as food for nearby wildlife. Watch the #video below to see the process in action. Learn more in @CurrentBiology: @KornderA

@LucreSnooker Good question! We considered that migrating cells in sponge tissues might be involved, but these move very slowly, typically less than 15 um per min. See: Bond, C. (1992). Continuous cell movements rearrange anatomical structures in intact sponges. J Exp Zool, 263(3), 284-302.

@CoralReefFish @MikeMihalitsis Word. We paid 7K for our latest open access publication. Up in Europe. Department covered it.

@taxochica @IBED_UvA @FAME_IBED_UvA @SpongeLoop It could be, we were only confident in naming the genus as we had no samples of the sponge

Had a lot of fun talking about our latest @SpongeLoop research on one of UK‘s most successful kids podcasts 🤩 From 10 min 30 sec onwards, I talk about sea sponges and how these animals at the other end of the evolution spectrum can sneeze to shed marine dust 🤧
In this week's Fun Kids Science Weekly podcast ⚛️ Niklas Kornder (@KornderA) tells us about sneezing sea sponges 🤧 And in Science in the News we look at scientists making toilet water safe to drink 🚽 and what singing whales mean for climate change 🐳

@carlosduartephd Many reefs there are subject to strong currents, hence good water quality, many incoming coral larvae and resident fish. Yet they‘re reduced to rubble zones by dynamite fishing. Heard the bangs myself in 2017. is there a focus on consolidating those rubble zones? Gain/cost 🚀

Had the pleasure to chat for 10 min with Tom on @NewstalkFM about my new study on sneezing sponges. Listen in to find out how I discovered this peculiar behavior 🧽🤧 @IBED_UvA @FAME_IBED_UvA

@expeditionlog It appears even among sponges the duration of contraction-expansion cycles can vary dramatically. Similar purpose for pulsations in deep-sea sponges (so much more difficult to study) is not far-fetched, perhaps a topic to discuss at WSC in Oct with @brian_strehlow & @SallyLeys

Porites corals are colonies of marvelous, mm-sized polyps 🤩 Each polyp is a translucent animal, harboring colorful symbiotic algae. #NaturePhotography
