I’m honored & excited to take the oath today to serve as Secretary of
@ncdhhs
. Thank you to
@NC_Governor
for your confidence in me & thank you to my colleagues for their incredible dedication & service. Let's get back to work!
One year ago, on December 14, 2020, we distributed the first vaccines in NC. Now, 1 year later, 14 million doses have been administered with 69% of adults and 91% of those 65+, fully vaccinated. An incredible team effort. Don't wait,

.
@ncdhhs
I am incredibly grateful for
@SecMandyCohen
's visionary leadership over the past 5 years. NC is a better & healthier state because of her service.
I'm honored by
@NC_Governor
's confidence in me to lead
@ncddhs
& improve the health, safety & well-being of all North Carolinians.
Mandy Cohen has shown extraordinary leadership during her tenure and she has worked every day during this pandemic to help keep North Carolinians healthy and safe. We are stronger because of her efforts and we are enormously grateful for her service.
We warmly welcome Mandy K. Cohen, MD, MPH, as Director for CDC and Administrator for ATSDR. She is one of the nation’s top health leaders with experience leading large, complex organizations, and a proven track-record protecting Americans’ health & safety.
I would like to thank the Senate for their unanimous support of my confirmation. I look forward to our continued partnership to improve the health and wellness of North Carolina.

As a public servant, I care about my community, but as a gay man, there was something that I couldn't do to give back: donate blood.
Today, that changed.
Screening based on behavior, not who people are, can protect AND expand the blood supply.
They say: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
Friends, we got to this moment together.
And here’s to just how far we can go to improve the health and wellbeing of North Carolina if we keep working together.
Let’s do it.
Nearly 300,000 North Carolinians woke up today with full Medicaid health care coverage. It is the most significant investment in health care in North Carolina’s history. Learn more about
#NCMedicaid
expansion: .
This week, I donated blood🩸for the 3rd time since the
@US_FDA
started screening for at-risk behaviors instead of who people are.
It’s 21 months since we called for the decades-outdated policy to be changed. Fixing things takes time. Sticking with it (pun!) makes a difference.
Today, joined by health officials from 8 other states and D.C., I sent a letter to the
@US_FDA
requesting their
#blood
donation policy that discriminates against gay and bisexual men be done away with.

The delay of Medicaid expansion has cost North Carolina billions of dollars, especially in rural communities.
And caused heartache for hundreds of thousands of hard working folks.

Friday, we open the doors to comprehensive health insurance for 600k North Carolinians. Great to discuss our all-hands-on-deck marathon approach, the nearly 300k who are covered day one, where to learn more (), behavioral health investments, and much more!
Excited to announce that
@NCDHHS
launched our first online data dashboard with information about the progress & quality of our NC early care & learning network. This dashboard will be a powerful tool for communities across NC.
This morning, I saw my healthcare provider for a preventive health check-up.
This afternoon, I’m joining
@NC_Governor

I worried that you couldn't be gay & be a public servant. It kept me in the closet.

I applaud the N.C. House and the leadership of the

But we're not done yet. It's critical to rural and mental health that we get this across the finish line in the next few weeks.
#NCGA
The
#COVID19
pandemic has pressured our own mental health & NC's mental health services like nothing we've ever experienced. There is a lot we can & should be doing. & as I write in
@newsobserver
, it starts with
#MedicaidExpansion
& sufficient coverage
Delaying the budget and delaying Medicaid Expansion is putting hundreds of thousands of lives at risk and wasting hundreds of millions of dollars — each month.
“So, I’m stuck.”
Gov. Cooper signed Medicaid expansion in March. A budget was expected by July, but legislators missed the deadline.
Now, many North Carolinians' healthcare has come to a halt. Some need life-saving treatment.
I am thrilled to announce that Victor Armstrong (
@1of2vics
) will be joining us at
@ncdhhs
as the Director of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, & Substance Abuse Services. Victor is the right person to join our Behavioral Health & IDD team.

Thanksgiving isn’t always happy. The holidays can be a hard time for a number of reasons.
But there is a number to call if you or someone you know is in crisis or just needs someone to talk to: 988.
Wishing you a Thanksgiving that is whatever you need it to be…
“Someone coming to the Emerg Dept at UNC Rex may wait as long as a full day to be seen” said Linda Butler, the CMO.
“Please get vaccinated so you do not end up a patient in one of our hospitals,” Butler said. “We don’t want your business; we want you to be healthy.”
Nobody should feel alone. The pandemic has led to many North Carolinians experiencing stress, anxiety, loss, & other threats to their mental health & wellness. The Hope4NC helpline provides free & confidential support while referring people to counseling & community resources.
@ncdhhs
@NC_Governor
Grateful to our team & healthcare workers that have been working through the holidays to help mitigate the impacts of the Omicron wave. Thanks to my fellow NC’ians for your partnership in rising to this challenge to protect ourselves, loved ones & workers. Vax. Boost. Test. Mask.

Today
@NC_Governor
and
@NCDHHS
released a $1B roadmap to transform the behavioral health system. Our goal is to make care available when and where its needed, ahead of a crisis, and ultimately reduce the number of people in crisis (1/3)
The launch of 9-8-8 has been a monumental advancement in connecting people to care. The best crisis system is one that averts crisis, which is why expanding Medicaid is the next best step to provide thousands of North Carolinians the mental health services they need.
Congratulations to Dr. Karen Smith on receiving the 2023 Rural Leadership Award.
Her contributions to her patients, her community, to improving the health and well-being of North Carolina are simply inspiring.
Heartbreaking data shared in this week's Child Fatality Taskforce Meeting about NC high school students in 2021:
10% attempted suicide.
22% seriously considered attempting suicide during past 12 months.
I am deeply grateful to have had the privilege to work closely and learn from
@SecMandyCohen
the past 4 years. You are a person of unwavering dedication to others & who carries a personal responsibility for the care and well being of every North Carolinian.

I’m thrilled for the Opioid Settlement dollars, $750M over 18 years. But treatment is expensive and long lasting. Medicaid Expansion brings $4 billion a year into NC and if we act NOW, a bonus of $1.7B dollars. That’s more than twice the settlement in a single check.
Thank you! Growing up, NC invested in my education, health, and gave me opportunities to study science and policy as a first generation college student. After a tour of duty in DC, coming home to NC to pay it forward is my great honor.

For too long, I lived in fear. But finding the strength 12 years ago to tell folks who I am — a gay man — was, as my mother now says, the best thing that ever happened to me.
Bottom line: Medicaid expansion helps hard working North Carolinians AND improves the budget. Billions for health care heroes working hard to take care of their communities.

It is heart-wrenching to see Mr. Brooks face this life threatening delay and know there is a simple solution within reach: allow Medicaid expansion to move forward.
With the Monkeypox outbreak, it's critical we must start with the data. The data tell us that anyone can get this virus, but nearly all cases in NC & the US are in men - & more specifically men who have sex with men. And it's disproportionately affecting Black men.
It was good to have
@Burgin4Senate
and Katherine R. at

today. I appreciate Sen. Burgin’s leadership and partnership in supporting all North Carolinians on their journey towards becoming healthier and more supported to live, work, and thrive.
Here’s an important update from

Director, Dr. Mandy Cohen, reminding everyone to take steps to prevent the common respiratory illnesses spreading right now: flu, COVID, & RSV.
Our best tool to prevent severe disease and protect ourselves and each other is vaccination.
Expanding Medicaid is a marathon effort.
Many eligible folks work 2 jobs, take care of kids and parents, and live busy lives.

For too long, we’ve not spent the money needed to support mental health. It’s created the crisis of today. People languish in EDs, no one can find care, families suffer.

We have 3 priorities at
@ncdhhs
:
- Behavioral Health & Resilience.
- Child & Family Wellbeing.
- Strong & Inclusive Workforce.
Threaded through all three is something we all agree on: we want to keep our families and communities safe.
An achievable goal, when we work together.
Last night, South Dakotans voted to

Now, they’re one of 39 states investing in mental health, rural communities, working families, and lowering costs for businesses.
Meanwhile, NC is still losing $521 million a month. We can’t wait any longer.
