Atletico in their comfort zone right now. Defending in banks of 5 and 4, with 3-4 Atleti players always on the strong side staying compact and narrow following the ball carrier. They've barely had to deal with any entries into the penalty area. Ironic that the 3 left wingers have barely had a touch on the left at all. The wing has been given to Fran Garcia. Vini and Mbappe central. Vini's had the least amount of touches of any outfield player on the field, and they've been poor. The team looked mentally-spent after the penalty. Immediately followed it with poor pressing sequences and poor tracking. Took Atletico 1-3 passes to break through behind Vazquez who is now pushing up. Not a penalty. Hard to focus on the football. There are two things true right now: Real Madrid have been bad, officiating has been bad.

Kids growing up watching Real Madrid in 2025 are going to be traumatized by this list of defenders. In 2040 they’ll be telling the next generation “you guys don’t know how good we have it now. I was around long enough to remember we went into the most pivotal stretch of the season with a starting back 4 of Vazquez, Asencio, Tchouameni, Mendy, and virtually no subs”

Marcelo: We won't see anyone like him again. He was a cheat code. Probably the player I miss the most after CR (part of it because my eyes bleed everyday with our current wing-back situation). Love this quote from Valdano: “Marcelo brings the ball out with outstanding naturalness and ease. He goes through the middle of the pitch as if it was his own home and, when he gets to the top of the pitch, he has the solutions a forward has. We’re used to full-backs like Gordillo or Roberto Carlos who plough the wing; Marcelo goes by planting flowers.”
