Check out our latest study in @ScienceAdvances on the contextual activation of V1 neurons in the absence of feedforward input!
Sometimes neurons in V1 are activated by the context even if there is nothing in their receptive field. We find that activity is strongest if the context suggest that there is a figure (e.g. a grey disc). Interested? Read paper of Lisa Kirchberger et al.
