today, i was reminded that i cannot mental health, journal, therapy or optimize my way out of this pandemic.
we're living through trauma with systems that are letting us down.
what i eat in a day as a woman that prioritizes her health:
- coffee with half and half
- 1200 calories worth of cheez its
- two cheese sticks
- a salad buried underneath a mountain of cheese
Someone on IG said, "PTO is not enough, I need to go on maternity leave. No, I'm not having a baby. I am the baby."
I have never felt something so deep in my spirit.
In my 30s, I no longer want to hustle.
I want morning walks, followed by slow cups of coffee. I want less screen time and more face to face interaction with people I love. I want to see me smiling in pictures instead of on Zoom.
That’s what I want for me.
Game of Thrones is on.
Handmaid’s Tale is coming back.
Big Little Lies is returning.
If y’all thought I was leaving the house ever again, you were wrong.
There’s a conversation happening about journalists and their role in the music industry.
I’ll say this: We really really need to understand the difference between journalism and PR, editorial vs advertorial, reporter and media personality.
It matters.
Hi. I have a personal conspiracy theory.
I work for Adweek as a social media editor.
Adweek sometimes writes/tweets/Instagrams about Aviation Gin.
Ryan Reynolds is behind Aviation Gin.
This brings it full circle and thus, Ryan Reynolds knows I exist.
Please hold your applause.
social media marketing is just one portion of your digital strategy. websites and user experience are also important, folks.
social media is a ✨tool✨ to get customers to your product or service.
if you're having someone on your staff take on social media management responsibilities in addition to their regular job, you need to pay them.
social media management is a job.
Literally all I do as a social media editor:
I already saw that meme.
No, I can’t make this go viral.
RT’d
Yes, they tweeted at us. It’s NBD.
That won’t resonate with our audience.
THE ALGORITHM.
Literally all I do as a national news digital producer:
I already posted that online.
That’s not breaking news.
Livestream is up.
Yes, I can share that story.
I am going to rewrite these stories for web.
Stop writing boring headlines for web.
I am not IT.
Everything is on fire.
I was one of the ppl saying they wouldn’t watch
#WhenTheySeeUs
because I’m tired of seeing those who look like me in pain.
But I’m glad I did. I needed to know. Too many times the history of the marginalized is glossed over, forgotten & changed. Not this time. Thank you

I know y'all are busy talking about Love Is Blind today, but I hope you'll find time to read my latest Digiday story.
Black Twitter was a force to be reckoned with. Marketers knew that. But with Musk's reign, where does Black Twitter live now?
I spoke with almost 20 social media managers for this piece. Some on the verge of burnout and others burned enough to leave the industry.
The question now is how do we fix it, and is up to the industry or the agencies?
idk if this makes sense, but the idea of constantly advocating for yourself is kind of exhausting.
advocating for yourself at the doctor's office, at work, in relationships, during elections, etc.
i get it, but it's a lot and i wish we could just exist sometimes.
just saw someone tweet about turning abandoned malls into co-working spaces with bookstores, cafes, restaurants and day care centers.
it'd be a dream come true and a really good use of vacant space.
we really gotta do a better job of explaining career possibilities to kids.
like, if i would have known i could get paid to make jokes as a copy writer instead of a standup comedian, i would have freaking gone to ad school.
Another hill I'm willing to die on: Social media management isn't a one-person job.
It is several jobs and if you have one person bearing that responsibility, listen to their expertise and PAY THEM THEIR WORTH.

Ma’am. We are in a pandemic. My game plan is to not catch the ‘Rona. That’s the best I can do for y’all.
Journalism and public relations are not the same thing. Journalism and public relations are not the same thing. Journalism and public relations are not the same thing. Journalism and public relations are not the same thing. Journalism and public relations are not—
Daily reminder to mute yourself during Zoom meetings.
I forgot to mute myself so everyone just heard me say “I’m ready to stop talking and go eat” and “my stomach is touching my back.”
So I’m going to go rocket launch myself into the sun.
If you haven't heard, new year, new bio.
Super excited to join

We gotta talk about quality over quantity in journalism. Our current business model is broken, prioritizing page views and ad dollars over solid reporting with nuance and analyzation.
Not to mention it's burning out some of our brightest stars.
We have to find a solution.
I’ve actually abandoned at this point. As a journalist, I’m not the intended audience, it seems.
Now, I take my audio recording and put it in Slack. Slack transcribes it pretty quickly and it’s a godsend 🙏🏾
i use for interviews and at some point since i started using it it’s become an exclusively b2b product so instead of just showing me a transcript, it also creates an AI synopsis of the interview (usually unhelpful) and “action items” (always unhelpful lol)
Normalize putting the same amount of effort into your friendships as you do your romantic relationships.
Friendships are just as important as romantic relationships, and I feel we forget that a lot.
After I turned 27, I started panicking about my career. I thought if I didn't have everything figured out by 30, I failed.
I've hit a point in my career where I'm not sure what success looks like anymore, so I'm using 2020 as a clean slate & a reminder to be patient with myself.
After seeing many job postings for audience engagement editors, I feel like our industry needs to reevaluate what an audience engagement role looks like.
It's often more than one role, meant for more than one person.
I guess now is a good time for a 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑢𝑝𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑒 📢
After 3 years in news and social media alongside some truly innovative people, I've started a new career journey as a digital marketer at
@Turner
!
Here's to something new 🎉
I don't understand the push behind return to office mandates. Flexible work expands who you can hire, offers better work-life balance and saves overhead costs.
i do not understand people who forget to eat lunch.
i forget a lot of things, but my stupid brain would sooner leak out of the side of my head than allow me to miss a meal.
international women's day ad campaign pitches <<<<<< year-round pitches about closing the gender pay gap, proper family leave and promoting women of color.
a lot of pr and comms folks will ask me what's the best way to pitch.
the answer is this: research before pitching.
- understand the publication
- understand each reporter's beat
Something I'm not seeing: industry resources for social media managers.
We're more than a decade deep into this and (unless I'm mistaken) I haven't seen industry groups tackle this.
