This essay by George J. Veith is well worth a read to understand how the US, the USSR, and North Vietnam coordinated to avoid unnecessary bloodshed during the closing days of the Vietnam War in April 1975.

January 18 marks the 75th anniversary of Vietnam-China ties. China is the first country to recognize Vietnam. China's recognition paved the way for the Soviet Union's recognition of Vietnam less than 2 weeks later on January 30. North Korea followed suit on January 31.
