Why do mangaka's shade in "dots"?
I see a lot of people who get confused about it that dont really understand the process of creating manga, so I hope I can help explain it a little to make it easier to understand.
From my experience selling at Comiket/Comitia in Japan vs selling at anime cons in America, I couldn't agree more.
At American cons I felt forced to make fan art prints/merch in order to sell anything, while the original manga I self-published would sell maybe 5-10 copies, but
One thing that makes me sad about the US manga creator ecosystem is how creators end up spending more time & creative energy making prints & “merch” to sell in artists alley vs making comics. The Kodansha editors fr JP noticed this diff too & were slightly puzzled by this.
It's always flattering to me when people see my art and think I'm a published mangaka, even though I've never been published.
I've tried many times to submit to contests, send story pitches and show my work to publishers directly without any luck. However I try not to let
my very first time tabling at Comiket in Japan, where no one knee my work yet and I just had one original manga to sell, I SOLD OUT and probably sold more of my manga there than at any American cons combined.
Japanese cons foster original talent/creativity, while American cons
do not have an audience for original manga work. There is no room for new original works to grow because then you waste a lot of money on table/printing, thus the fan art merch=sales cycle continues.
After experiencing comic markets in Japan, American anime cons cant compare.
✨Useful manga tip✨
❌DO NOT: Draw every background by hand, very time consuming when trying to get pages done fast.
✅DO: Use auto actions to turn your photographs into monochrome manga backgrounds instantly. Same method used by mangaka's like Inio Asano and many more.
"No one ever told you you can't become a manga artist!!"
I got a lot of comments like that on a recent video I posted, but that mindset used to be common and discouraged me a lot. I feel so lucky now to work as a full time comic artist/illustrator and I'm glad I didn't give up🥰
Is there really drama about a Vtuber being mean towards their fan artists...
Listen, I don't care what you say about the quality of your art, if ya'll make art for me I will save it, print it and tape it to my hypothetical refrigerator and cherish it.
The main reason is: reducing printing costs. A lot of printers only give options to print either in Color or Monochrome (black and white). If you paint with gray, you have to print it in color which is going to cost WAY more than just printing in monochrome.
Ppl on Tiktok: so are you depressed living in Japan yet? You must be depressed and hate Japan by now!!
Me: *eating Family Mart pudding on some corner in Shibuya just chilling* what-
Also when printing in gray the printer might add a weird color tone that wasnt intended so the final printed product will look different than the digital version. Using tone helps to reduce that risk since only black ink is used.
And finally, using tone helps to keep that "traditonal manga" feeling which is nice if youre trying to draw authentic looking manga.
I hope that this thread was helpful, and feel free to let me know if you have other questions about the manga creation process💕
The shading used in manga is called "screentone." When manga is drawn traditionally, you buy sheets of tone and cut out the parts you want to shade using a knife and paste it onto the paper. The paper has glue on it so it sticks to the page easily. However,
With a lot of Vtubers graduating it's true we're probably past the peak/boom of Vtubing but I don't think we're anywhere near the end. As technology/VR becomes more advanced I think virtual idols and content creators are here to stay and will keep evolving over time
now with digital tools, screentone can be applied easily by just putting toned textures over your drawing and painting it in like you would normal colors. Its way faster and easier to do this way
But if thats the case, why use screentone now rather than just painting gray tones?

✨List of most recommended brushes to draw manga in Clip Studio Paint✨
I've had soooo many comments and messages in the past requesting to know what brushes I use to draw authentic-looking manga, so here's a list of the best brushes I've used:
First DemonDice follows me and then Sydsnap follows/likes a post about Idol Royale 😳 what a boost of motivation, I'll do my best on my manga/projects!!
I use this method for most of my city-scape backgrounds in Idol Royale! The result looks good and the pages are finished quickly.

Everything is so sudden it's still hard to believe...
Vtubing is such a strange and fun part of otaku culture, and much of it was brought to the west because of Coco. It'll be sad to see you go, but I'm sure you have a bright future ahead as well.
