This one’s a blast from the past. My very last landing on the 767. Saturday 21 Dec 14. Video taken by a good mate and fellow 767 driver in the back seat.
Gee it was an awesome machine!
It seems that
@British_Airways
have changed their social media policy meaning that their crew can no longer post photos on Twitter of some of the fantastic views that crew get to see.
Shame that BA will now miss that really positive advertisement that comes from engaged crew.
And Captain Sean Golding nails the landing on the first ever New York to Sydney flight.
Well done to my
@Qantas
colleagues both in the jet and behind the scenes.
@3YearLetterman
lol. We boil water in a kettle because we have an electrical system that doesn’t fail when a kettle is plugged in.
But this should be fun! What’s next? 😜😂👍🏼
Brought a bunch of Swifties across from Perth to Sydney today. They were in fine spirits and insisted on gifting all of the crew these little bracelets.
A couple of great shots from the folks at of the Dreamliner at Uluru.
If you haven’t seen their work before they’ve got a few awesome shots of Qantas final 747 flight out of Sydney.
Planned route for the inaugural

PER- LHR. It’s so long it doesn’t show entirely on the one screen shot.
At 8032nm it’s 203nm longer than the great circle route.
Planned at 17:07 flight time.

Daft take. All pilots are held to the same standard. There is no quarter given. Almost every pilot I fly with couldn’t care less for the sex, race, gender, gender identity, religion or any other attribute of those we fly with.
What do we value above all else? Competency.
I hope there is part of the transmission missing on this… but perhaps not.
Seriously, declare MAYDAY. Clear, unambiguous, shuts everyone else up.
‘Declaring an emergency’ is just waffle.
FULL ATC audio I compiled and uploaded to TikTok this morning shows how busy the Alaska 1282 crew was. Amazing job by both pilots quickly working through the situation, getting down to 10,000, and quickly getting back to PDX.
Captions are self-generated so apologies for any
Singapore airlines is currently cashed up to the tune of $19billion SGD. That’s $21 billion AUD. They’ve certainly enough cash to sort out an airline they own 20% of and take a controlling stake.
Not something Aussie taxpayers need to do

MyGov app, Medicare app, Service NSW app, Check in QLD app, Service Victoria app, Safe WA app, G2G pass app, CovidSafe app, ATO app.
Seriously, can we just consider the ‘Australia Card’ again? It’s not like the government doesn’t have all our data anyway!
Provisional flight plan for QF14, Buenos Aires to Darwin. 8027nm Over the top of Antartica. Planned flight time of 17:21.
I suspect it’ll be daylight virtually all the way given they’re flying with the sun taking off at 1125am and landing 1845 in DRW.
@speedbird020
How do you train someone when there is just a single pilot at the controls? Captains are developed over years of flying with more experienced pilots, not just anointed and sent to operate an aeroplane on their own.
Into the morning Sun.
Turning ‘base’ for SYD 34L after an all night ‘freight dog’ flight from Tokyo.
So thrilled I was able to catch this beautiful moment in time.

False: Australians only flush coffee down the drain when in they’re in the USA after discovering that coffee is American urban slang for strained sewage.
On approach into Manila on a surprisingly clear afternoon.
When I was an F/O on the 767 this flight was timed for a night time arrival so seeing Manila like this in daylight is fantastic.
After flying all night, the sunrise in the tropics never fails to impress.
Seoul- Sydney.
The dead bug smudged along the window the only thing that ruined the view!

My F/O enjoying a lamb shanks dinner with a beautiful sunset backdrop between Cairns and Sydney last night.
Not enough flying for me recently.
@speedbird020
Heading to our jet in Shanghai and there is this poor Ethiopian freighter that had a cargo fire on the ground in July 2020. Looking very forlorn. A write off.
There are days in this job where you just have to sit back and admire the view- even if it is on just two hours sleep in the last 27.
Thankful for the grace that allows me to have opportunities like this.
Clearly BA’s message to the crew internally is dramatically different to what they’re saying here. All of BA’s crew on Twitter can’t have all interpreted it the same allegedly incorrect way.
A West Australian colleague transited Adelaide for 45 minutes. The Captain did a walk around of the aircraft during transit and did not come into contact with SA residents. WA Government now requires them to self isolate on return for 14 days.
What. A. Joke.

@GemmaTognini
Prior to 9/11 this would happen in flight. Visits to the flight deck were a common thing. It would almost be unusual if you did not have a visitor on a trans continental or international flight.
It was the start of the aviation journey for many young people.
I miss those days.
Remember folks, being an airline pilot is all about the glamour! 😜😂
(Stuck in a hotel room at Shanghai airport).
And despite the bleak outlook I’m still grateful and feel so blessed that I have a little bit of work.
Off to Singapore for the first time since April and we’ll be allowed to leave the hotel.
Fatty’s here we come! (Best Chinese food in Singapore for those who were thinking something different with that statement!)
A couple of photos from today’s SYD- MEL sector. First landing in the jet in 188 days. Better than I expected on MEL 34.
Great snow coverage just south of Canberra, Mt Kosciuszko, our shadow with a nice rainbow halo on descent into Melbourne.
So I reckon I could land on it. Getting a taxi home though looks like it’d still be a problem.
Western Sydney airport starting to look the goods though.
There are days when this job delivers the most spectacular scenery. The photos don’t do it justice!
Interestingly it lasts for just a few minutes before the light changes again.

MAYDAY is ICAO standard phraseology. It’s literally what the rest of the world uses. Having now done some digging I can see that the FAA doesn’t use the same firmness in terminology that virtually everyone else does. It’s definitely a defect of the US system I reckon.
@PolybiusChamp
@3YearLetterman
No doubt it is. Australians normally rate it marginally above the quality of jokes that Yanks use when trying to make a crack on the whole Australia/ Austria thing.
They finally arrived. So thrilled to have these as a momento of my time on the

I flew OJN just six times as a F/O and was ‘pilot flying’ five of those times. My second last landing on the

The flight plan for QF787 ‘flight to nowhere’ today.
@flightradar24
showed a scenic departure from Sydney and no doubt they’ll be down low again for the flight over the barrier reef up near Hamilton Island (HM) and again out near Uluru (AYE).

100 years ago today, in a tiny outback town in Queensland, an airline that would become a worldwide icon was born.
I was recruited as a S/O in the 75th year of
@qantas
existence. I’m humbled to be contributing to its legacy of operational excellence as a Captain at its 100th.
Never have I ever been so excited as to see a sim session appear on my roster! After 178 days I’m heading back to work.
It may be only for a month but in these times you take what you can get.
No, they don’t
@newscomauHQ
They show a perfectly working thrust reverser system. That is also the right engine. My sources suggest it was Left engine that was shut down.
I’d call you ‘muppets’ but I’m trying to be better at not using names when calling out ignorance.
I can’t fathom this headline. Contest to the reporting the initial report did NOT confirm ‘the aircraft was lucky not to break up in mid-air’.
This was a significant turbulence event but these sorts of headlines are appalling and disgusting. Click bait!
We now have a much better picture of what happened on board that Singapore Airlines flight that was nearly shaken out of the sky last week, and it's terrifying. The first report has been released, confirming the aircraft was lucky not to break up in mid-air.

Normally I’m posting red Qantas tails in the sunset.
Today it’s a beautiful maple leaf sunset in Vancouver.
Only a two hour transit and a 15 hour flight to go.
Provisional flight plan for the second ever JFK- SYD flight. A flight time just short of 19 hours though probably a bit longer once SYD arrivals are factored into it. God speed to the crew.

departure from Australia, here it is. Lots of lats and longs. I just need to ascertain whether the flight planners built it and it could be uploaded or whether each waypoint inserted manually.
If ever you wanted to see political policy dressed up as ‘safety theatre’ (designed to look safe rather than to actually be safe) look no further than

approach to crew isolation requirements and crew overnighting in WA from the eastern states.
One of the highlights of my year was being able to present these to
@Qantas
newest A330 Captain earlier today. 🎉👍🏼
That he taught me IFR flying some 28 years ago is an added bonus.
Well done mate! I won’t tag you to protect your Twitter innocence. 😜
Imagine trying to deal with an engine failure in a single pilot airliner. Just imagine the coordination required between that single pilot and cabin crew, ATC, passengers, other aircraft, monitoring the aircraft performance, engaging with the company, setting up for approach, etc
AIPA statement on

"This type of incident is extremely rare. We are pleased the expertly trained and professional

pilots took all the right steps to deal with the incident and were able to land safely back in Sydney."
This is what 10 hours of back of the clock ‘fun’ looks like tonight.
Followed by the obligatory 14 days of isolation despite having not been within 2m of a single soul whilst in Shanghai. Bring on open borders and no more iso BS.
@speedbird020
Sometimes the job has perks. Even if it comes off the back of an overnight flight and little sleep.
Last time in HNL for probably a few years as the 787 takes over the route from the A330 soon.
@speedbird020
Saturday morning. Sydney departure board. Pre Covid this screen would have shown flights only for the next couple of hours. In Covid world this is the entire day.
Fingers crossed sanity prevails when we get to 80% double vaxx’d and Aussies can start to live life again.
I live just down the road from a NSW Public school. It’s awesome listening to them play the

And now for the trip home! 7:10 of fun and another sunrise proudly sponsored by my employer!

note that we’re on a ‘flex track’ once inside Australian airspace taking advantage of winds and direct tracking.
@speedbird020
A couple of Dawn shots as we enter Australian airspace on the flight from Haneda. The 25 minute ATC delay on arrival was not what is preferred after a 9 hour overnight flight!

Dwarfed by CBs (cumulonimbus clouds aka Thunderstorms) northwest of Manila before commencing our approach into an eerily quiet Hong Kong Airport on a glorious early evening.
A quiet

means no 34R for arrival and instead a left circuit for 34L.
The bonus is a fantastic view of Sydney Harbour, the bridge and the Opera House.
