Look it’s a pretty good day when you get promoted to full Professor, but it’s a MUCH better day when your friends get promoted too. One of the best parts of this job is the friends you make along the way.
@uOttawaBMI
@HeartInstitute
Elated to be promoted to Associate Professor with tenure! And, when your friends get promoted at the same time, naturally celebrations are in order! 🥂 So lucky to have amazing mentors, trainees and colleagues

We are excited to share our hot-off-the-press study uncovering how RIPK1, a pro-inflammatory regulator of inflammation & cell survival, is a genetic risk factor for obesity in humans.
Here's what we found: 1/
I’m overwhelmed by all of the messages and posts from friends and colleagues near and far. Thank you to my
@HeartInstitute
colleagues for trusting me with this role, but mostly the
#Rayhive
team for cheering me on. We’ve got lots to do, let’s go. 💪
Following a rigorous international recruitment process, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute has named Dr. Katey Rayner as its next chief scientific officer and vice-president of research. Congratulations!
@KateyRayner
#ottnews
A little out of practice, but time for take off. ✈️ I’m going to present to a real life audience and network with real life scientist humans. Pinch me!
Check out my cell-fie! Those are my fibroblasts growing happily under the microscope. I donated a skin biopsy to optimize iPSCs (stem cells) for some cool upcoming projects (👀
@ThaisCoutinhoMD
) They are pretty good-looking, if I do say so my cell-f. Ha! I’m here all night.
I was fortunate enough to write this review article with the incomparable
@LeahSusser
, a PhD student in the
#Rayhive
lab. If you think, like we do, that macrophages really are the coolest kid in the class, check it out. 👇
Hey do you like science? How about inflammation? Maybe aging? The heart? The brain? BOTH? If so, we are looking for awesome people to join our team. We have cool new projects starting, and we are looking for grad students and postdocs to join us!
#Rayvive
Our study led by
@MyAnhNguyen9
and Huy-Dung Hoang is hot off the press in
@CircRes
! 👇 Their creative approach shows that miR-223 in atherosclerotic macrophages controls its genes mostly via translational repression. This miRNA is a powerhouse 💪!!
miR-223 promotes the anti-inflammatory phenotype & cholesterol efflux of macrophages. miR-223-/- in murine models yields atherogenesis, lipid-laden plaques, and increased inflammatory markers via broad translational effects.

@KateyRayner
Congratulations to my good friend and colleague
@MireilleOuimet
for winning this competitive award! Sorry I had to miss your talk, but happy to have played a supporting role as conference babysitter. 👶🍼
Although it's hard to imagine an actual hard-copy, print edition of a journal, our latest paper is in actual hard-copy print in Circulation
@CircAHA

RIPK1 expression associates with inflammation in early atherosclerosis in humans & can be therapeutically silenced to reduce NF-κB activation & atherogenesis in mice. Read more:

The littles were so so excited for this day (despite the worried faces and fear of needles). On the right--live footage of the littlest one "kicking COVID right in the butt". Thank you, science. 🙏💉🩹
I know I am biased but
@adilrasheed88
gave an outstanding talk about how cool the spleen is during atherosclerosis. And—he is recruiting for his brand spanking new lab so if you think the spleen is cool too, hit him up!
#VascularDiscovery23
What a privilege it has been to chair the
#VascularDiscovery23
meeting with
@KathyMartinYale
! We had fun putting the program together and even more fun this week in Boston with our colleagues. Thanks everyone for attending and making the meeting a huge success. 🙏
My friend Erin (allegedly Twitterless, but we know she is watching 👀) won a much-deserved award for her research contributions to our Dept. She is the most generous colleague, and person, I know. Her work behind the scenes for allll the things, is recognized. We need more Erins.
I am so fiercely proud of this person, winning this award, after this sh*#-show of a year. In fact, all his hard work has made this year much, much better all around. Keep an eye on this one, he's going places. Congrats Adil, you are most definitely

10 years ago today I defended my PhD. What a wild decade it has been! Boston—>NYC—>Baby—>Ottawa (Assistant Professor)—>Baby—>Associate Professor (still Ottawa)...I wonder what the next 10 will bring!
Calling all immunology-loving cardiovascular scientists! We are hiring! Come work at the amazing Heart Institute, live in a wonderful city (ignore today's snow 😬) and have fun doing science with us:
Transfected!! Yesterday was a big day for the

@InfectiousBeth
Did you know that in Canada, almost all graduate programs start with enrolment into an MSc? If you choose to transfer into the PhD program, then great, but most do not. This gives students a lot of time (1.5-2y) to decide if a PhD (in that lab, that program) is really for them.
A new Rayner lab tradition starts: a lab “convocation” complete with themed hat (thank you German colleagues for the inspiration), Lego cupcakes, and of course bubbles 🍾 . We are so proud of
@MyAnhNguyen9
and all she has done—and miss her already. 🎓
New paper alert! The PhD work of
@LeahSusser
is now online. Leah found that mitochondrial dynamics (fission + fusion) are critical for resolution responses in macrophages. 1/
I am bursting with pride that my mentor and friend
@KathrynMooreLab

shirt. A great day to reflect on how far we have come in the battle with heart disease, but how much further we need to go. But we won’t stop. 💪♥️
We capped off the year with a fun lab activity that got us out and got us active. Maybe some people hadn’t put skates on for years, despite living in a frigid country. We had a blast, but can’t wait till we can have have a “real” end-of-year party next year. 🤞🎉🤞🎉🤞

When I finished my PhD, my sister wrote the title of my paper(s) in icing on cakes for my celebratory party. She needed about 6 cakes to fit everything...the one and only time I ate cake with the words "estrogen" and "heat shock protein" on it.
A great end to a great week with “we are pleased to inform you your manuscript is accepted for publication”. A collaboration with

Yesterday was a hard but happy day. We said goodbye to
@adil__rasheed
and sent him off to start his brand new lab. It won’t be the same without you, that’s for sure- these will always been known as the “Adil years” (aka when we were ballers in the Prez suite).
#hematopoiesis4eva
Of course I owe a hugeeee debt of gratitude to my amazing mentor
@KateyRayner
for putting up with me for the last couple of years. I wouldn’t have had half the success I did if it weren’t for you, and I’m proud to have made you a budding immunologist haha. Thanks for everything!
Another fun
@SkypeScientist
session! These 4th graders at
@bvschools
were ON FIRE with their Qs: “why is sleep good for our hearts? How does low cholesterol prevent heart disease? Is a fast heart beat bad for you?” They are the next generation of cardiovascular researchers!
It is an understatement to say I am proud of
@adilrasheed88
and everything he has accomplished. Can’t wait to see all the cool things the Rasheed lab is going to do! But most importantly: lab nickname?
#onacholesteroll
?
Thrilled to announce I will be joining the team at

as an Assistant Professor!
The Rasheed lab will be opening this Fall, studying immunometabolic contributions to CVD.
Stay tuned for open positions!
My kids are FULLY CONVINCED about the existence of Santa. And feel SORRY for you if you don’t believe. Like you’re missing out on a global secret. And you’re also kinda dumb, because the evidence is pretty solid. It’s both hilarious and precious, and I never want it to end.
I have the privilege of co-supervising this amazing student with

This is so important for those of us running a lab with complex experiments, animals, etc. I made the decision last week to shut down, so we have been able to plan and be in control to minimize the disruption. By the time the directive comes, we will already be closed and at home
At this point, every PI running a wet lab who isn’t in hard shutdown should start preparing for it immediately. It’s a matter of when not if, eventually university leadership will catch up and realize what’s going on.
At that point they may not give you much warning.
