Wow
@DB_Bahn
was für Mitarbeiter habt ihr im ICE515 heute morgen? Ansage kam „Es ist 1. Oktober und die Rocky Horror Lauterbach Show geht weiter und deswegen sind sie verpflichtet eine Maske zu tragen“. Ernsthaft? Maske tragen mit einer Horror Show vergleichen? 🤦♀️
Instead of "Advice for being a woman in Science", can we agree to just have "How to not be an asshole that drives women out of science" course for men? I am sick of all the advice. It puts the work on women how to navigate a shitty system made for and by men.
@DB_Bahn
This video is essentially why the Black Hole at the center of the Milky Way got the
#NobelPrize
today: They tracked *individual* stars orbit around the black hole over time. Animation from here:
Today is the day! Our work on the closest pair of super-massive black holes ever found is out! We directly dynamically detect two SMBHs that are only 500pc apart from each other, making it the only known SMBH pair with a sub-kpc separation.
That the harassing Leiden professor was de Zeeuw the former ESO director comes as zero surprise to someone who was a young female student there while he was the director and I am glad it is out and in the open.
@ericbkennedy
Honestly tweets like this annoy me for many reasons but mostly because you just cannot rule out that you were purely lucky AND/OR were just asymptomatic when you caught it.
Apparently its post-doc appreciation week. You know how to REALLY appreciate post-docs? Give us a real job! Thats it, that is all the appreciation we need. Not some nice but useless words.
Attitudes like this irk me to no end because they imply that career & money is everything in life. Maybe spending three more years on something you are passionate about instead of slaving for the capitalism overlords is also valuable?
I'm often asked "should I do a PhD?"
I usually say no, because:
- a PhD doesn't prepare you for most careers
- a PhD isn't required for most careers
- the risk to your mental health is high
- the opportunity cost is high $$
How would you answer this question?
Everyone posting their Aurora pictures makes me so happy. People stopping and marveling at a natural wonder is such a bright spot in a world full of doom and gloom.
Academic job offers these days:
Seeking highly qualified and motivated candidate with tons of experience and a Phd in astronomy. We pay minimum salary and the job is limited to one year and can only prolonged if we get funding and starting date is 7 weeks from now.
🤦♀️🤦♀️
One of the worst parts of academia for me is being blatantly ignored. Today a paper of the arxiv basically showed exactly what I predicted more than a year ago and no mention. Upon inquiring via email I only got a "um thanks we'll keep it in mind" boilerplate response.
Also this is not meant as a subtweet at all the women that have worked to highlight other women and their experience in science. This is an important contribution but I feel its time to change perspectives. We can give decades of good advice. If men don't change its useless.
Fuck yes!!! I did it 🥳😭🥳😭😆👌
Freiburg Marathon in 3:43 a 11min PR after trying for 4 years and being handed one unlucky thing after the other. It rained and stormed and it had 220m elevation gain and had a smile on my face the entire time. God I love marathons.
@angie_rasmussen
@webmz_
Honestly we have had the discussion in Europe when the Astrazeneca issue hit over and over again. You can compare the risk in terms of number but not of the disease. A standard blood clot is not what they have reported. Its a deadly clotting autoimmune disease.
OK we have reached the clickbait stage of this whole thing 😅 I say it again: No these two black holes are not dangerous to us!! They are astronomically close but that is still *really* far away from us. So no cause for concern.
I’m still in absolute shock they picked me omg ☺️😭☺️😄😭
Thanks everyone who supported me in this journey. Might have been the hardest ultra marathon of my life.
If you referee a paper of a junior scientist and take several months for each review step then this is just actively screwing that junior scientists career. Seriously don't do that. Yah we are all busy and on vacation but then do not accept to referee it.
@klawler9
@BallouxFrancois
It is NOT as simple as that. I do all the above and then some (marathon running, vegetarian etc.) have zero health issues and the Virus wiped me and my partner. How well you deal with it is not just determined by being previously healthy.
We detect the dynamical signature of an intermediate-mass black hole in the most massive Globular Cluster of Andromeda. This likely means that this cluster is a tidally stripped nucleus of a larger galaxy.
@drannawatts
@samayanissanke
@derspiegel
Honestly, anyone who has ever worked anywhere in Garching has heard plenty of stuff about him & his group and lets just say none of this is a surprise at all. Like all I am surprised at is that he is not able to even pretend to be a better person in a interview like this.
@HollsteinM
Für 3.5 Monate des Jahres durfte ich nur innerhalb von 1km raus und nur für 1h. Und musste mir dann immer von Freunden aus Deutschland anhören wie schlimm sie die Beschränkungen finden 🤦♀️
Bragging about someone who used to work for your University won a Nobel Prize when having deemed their work "Not of faculty quality" is ahem bold. Just shows how incompetent the higher-ups assessment of someones research quality is.
Having a permanent job now means I can make plans again! Its so crazy when your horizon goes from ~a month to ~your entire career. Its been wild and I think it will still take me a moment to adapt to that reality.
A pair of supermassive black holes have been discovered closer to Earth than ever before. And when we say 'supermassive' - one is 150 million times the mass of our Sun.
Astronomer

what it means and why it's so "amazing".
We’ve officially entered the time of the year where you have no clue which day of the week it is and you just exist in the vacuum of time that is between Christmas and New Years. 😂
@itsmedoctorbrie
That is insane 👀 And assume it derives from the german "Stier" being simply a bull its 100% "correct" that way. Not that there is a correct way to write last names. He'd love my last name because bird in German is Vogel with one g only 🤣🤣
Did a interview for a permanent job in FRENCH. Stick a fork in me I’m done 🤪
13 year old me would be happy to know that this useless french course will actually come in handy in a couple of years. 😂
My hometown newspaper
@Schwaebische
has also written an article about our recent SMBH discovery. Hilariously they made my joke about being the PR manager for a better public image of black holes the title. 😅 But its in German, sorry English speakers!
Best way to instantly get demotivated for work (and life) is to get rejection from two job application that were some of your last hope. Having no perspective sucks, but during a pandemic it sucks at least twice as much.
@karagoucher
I’m do sorry for your granddad. It breaks my heart to hear 😢 I’ve had the covid myself and it was horrible even as a 30 year old marathon runner. And now 6 months after the fact I still have lingering issues. It’s insane he acts like it’s nothing. 😡
Its been 3 days since Berlin Marathon and I am still floating on cloud 9. What a race. I had a magical day and was rewarded with a new shiny PR of 3:38. When a Marathon goes well there is nothing like it. Danke Berlin 🥰🥰
I shared my experience I had with having
#Covid_19
in a blog with
@PhysicsWorld
. Thanks for allowing us to tell mine and
@MatBethermin
story. You do not want this Virus even if you are young and healthy!
The paper I have been working on for a while is out! In this one I predicted the detectability of Globular Clusters in the full 6-year Euclid survey! And then tested detection models and size measurement using the first ERO data on the Fornax Cluster!
Also please fellow people on the internet do NOT victim blame in the de Zeeuw Leiden case. Typically there are huge power-gradients involved and many times only when one collects different incidents a big picture emerges.
@angie_rasmussen
@webmz_
So using it as a comparison is incredibly misleading in terms of disease comparison. Yes its rare but its real (at least from European data). And its NOT a normal blood clot.
Brutal day out there in New York and so proud I even finished. Conditions were like a Sauna and managed it we and thought I had a good day until around km 30 when the heat got to me and I got incredibly dizzy and disoriented.
The last 24 hours have been absolutely crazy but in like the best type of crazy. Never did I imagine the level of interest that I've received on our double super-massive black hole discovery. As a bonus, here is the ESO cast explanation video:
Twitter let me introduce you to the newest member of the Bethermin-Voggel household: Louisa!
She adopted to her new kingdom so quickly and
@MatBethermin
adores her 🥰🥰
I had the pleasure of talking to physics magazine about how we should not put the burden on women and in general minorities to adapt to the existing culture in physics but that rather the culture needs to change.
To keep women in the field, some researchers would like to see more emphasis on programs that create an inclusive physics community rather than on those that place the onus on women to adapt to the existing culture to survive,
@LetoSapunar
reports. (2/6)
I cannot even begin to understand why anyone would participate in this dumpster fire of a paper as a judge. And if you claim such a rigorous method to judge impact then maybe don't use subjective opinions of a select 22 astronomers. 😒
Strasbourg Half Marathon this morning! Absolutely loved my first half back. It’s the best distance. 1:44:23 on my watch. Not my best time but for 6 weeks post Covid I’ll take it. 🥳
@AEBaileyEpi
@GeneticCuckoo
Yes its a big discussion here and I think another reason it exploded so much in France, Italy & Spain where hugging & kissing everyone you meet is common. Whereas in germany even within families we often only shake hands or say hi.
In one hour I’m picking up
@MatBethermin
from his one week stay in the hospital. Infinitely grateful today and hoping we are finally done with this chapter! He’s been so strong though all of this ❤️
@emilydoesastro
My garmin has a “stress measure” and this is what happened when I finally put away twitter and read a book on my train. 🤷♀️ it’s surprisingly accurate and I can see the “corona stress” in its levels.
The nomadic lifestyle of academia is really tough during a pandemic. I moved 3months before the pandemic hit and still have almost zero social circle. Its quite a lonely existence that I see so many fellow academic going through which is even worse currently.
@mollypriddy
@Wikisteff
But we all do agree that it's a terrible system? Not even sure this should be legal to tell customers any less than the full final price or goods. I still tip but it's completely wrong on so many levels.
Tayrona National Park in Columbia! What an adventure yesterday. We walked 13km through dense rainforest and the most insane beaches we’ve ever seen. Insanely amazing nature here 🇨🇴🇨🇴
Yesterday
@MatBethermin
defended his habilitation here at the
@ObsStrasbourg
. He did great and of course we celebrated with lots of hai favourite wine 😊
Take that covid, you won’t catch us a second time!! Two new members of team moderna on the first day of eligibility for all 😆

It’s been an absolute blast attending this weeks
#aspengc2022
conference here at the center for physics. Such interesting talks, meeting colleagues, talking science and doing all the things we missed the last two years. That was incredible 🙌
Celebrated with the whole observatory today with a Pot (French for reception) and opened a couple bottles of Champagne. 🍾
Now that I’m back here it starts to sink in that I actually can make plans for the future 😄🙏
This result is one of the best evidence that black holes are actually real and exist. We directly see their gravitational pull on surrounding stars and gas and due to the high spatial resolution we know that this dark object must be very small and dense.
#NobelPrize
For those who don’t know the French system: it means I got a permanent job as astronomer in Strasbourg. I’ve cried like a solid bucket of happy tears. It’s the strangest thing to see your wildest dreams come true.
Just submitted a paper that I started just before COVID hit. 🥳
I feel this should count like more than one paper considering what we I (and we all) went through in the last year. Including me losing so much time to having the COVID and recovering from it.
@drannawatts
@samayanissanke
@derspiegel
Oh and no twitter outrage is going to change a thing about him. Max Planck directors already have almost unlimited power and with a nobel prize he is literally untouchable by the German system & max Planck society 😬
Now this is incredibly hard to do because the are on the sky that one needs to resolve to track the orbits is extremely small. That is why you essentially need to combine the light of 4 telescopes in interferometry.

Um kein großer Akzent nur viel Witzelei wie es typisch für Kölner ist. War auch bei paar anderen Sachen echt Lustig fand den Maskenwitz aber echt unpassend.
BREAKING NEWS:
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2021
#NobelPrize
in Physics to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi “for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems.”
Just found a fellow astronomers webpage who traces back their academic Genealogy to Galileo and it weirds me out much more than it should. I mean what is the obsession with your "lineage"? What is the intention of putting that up on your webpage?
Finally watching
#DontLookUp
and literally in Minute one they show this object and I immediately recognize it! Its a UCD in M85 that I often include in my datasets. 🤣😅 Here is the wiki article with the picture they used.
Day 7 of coronavirus and both me and
@MatBethermin
feel like we have turned a corner and are much better. 😀💪 Until we are back at remotely normal it’ll be at least another week. But just thankful we are ok! And thanks for all your well wishes it means a lot.
After my rough start with Covid 2.0 the magic of vaccines & previous infection did their job. Its day 3 only and like a flip was switched and I feel SO much better. This is definitely way WAY better than in pre-vaccine time. Previously I did not feel this good after 3 weeks!
Köln Half Marathon ✅
I got a 1h41 which was a bit off my sub 1:40 goal but not much. Still had a decently good race.
@MatBethermin
absolutely smashed it and ran a 1h39 good for a new PB and his first time sub-1:40.
@J_Voggel
was the best Sherpa helping and supporting us 😊
And in order to track these orbits one needs to survey them for decades. Having the precise orbits of the gas and stars around it enables us to calculate the precise mass of how much dark mass there should be using simple orbital dynamics.
#NobelPrize
The last couple days this situation has taken too much of my mental capacity. I did not see that coming. I mostly tend to wonder whether we could have and should have done more at the time to stop it from happening more.
I’m co-supervising three bachelor students on their project and this is their last week and they brought me chocolates as a thank you. It’s such a tiny gesture but man kids these days are the nicest!
My sister documented the pre launch worry & excitement of these two astronomers
@MatBethermin

Hat der mal darüber nachgedacht das bei einer solchen Regelung Menschen die Risikofaktoren haben dann vielleicht auch nicht hingehen und an der Wahl teilnehmen können? 🤔
And apparently today on science twitter: blaming people for not spotting an obscure porn reference in a journal article. Because apparently its ok to assume everyone knows *porn* references. Blows my mind.
My US based timeline:
- Yay
#FullyVaccinated
- I did these fun things with other fully vaccinated people
- So many fun things planned this summer
In France:
- Will I one day be allowed to leave my home again after 7pm? It's been half a YEAR.
I am now the owner of a BahnCard for the German train network. Feels kinda good having that instead of my frequent flyer card when I lived in the US. Yay for trains 😃
How do papers that do not give the details of their data/sample in a table get past the referee stage? Seriously this is really annoying as an observer.
