Several years ago I wanted to rent a really cute place in shimokita. Landlord didn’t want to rent to foreigners. Had a realtor that was able to arrange a meeting with him and I spoke with him in Japanese for about 20 minutes and he agreed to rent to me. Lived there for 4 years.

Pretty spot on. I’ve kept my personality and western outlook but absolutely do conform to the etiquette aspects of Japanese society such as train rules, patience, politeness, etc. I get along here just fine and you will too if you do this.
