Ok my other news! Excited to say that I will be a joint faculty member with
@WUSTLBio
as an Asst. Professor, & the
@DanforthCenter
as an Asst. Member starting in July 2024! My lab will use single-cell & spatial biology methods to study plant-pathogen interactions & development.
Welp here goes. Hey guys, I'm Kevin Cox, a 2nd year postdoc at the
@DanforthCenter
! I study plant-microbe interactions to figure out how plants "get sick" by microbes. I use single-cell RNA-seq methods to determine how plant cells and microbes "talk".

#NewPI
Update: Yesterday was July 1st, meaning I'm officially an Assistant Professor at
@WUSTLBio
and an Assistant Member at
@DanforthCenter
! Feels surreal to have my dream job. Time to make this an exciting year 1 as a faculty member!
I've been kind of quiet here for the last couple weeks. Mainly because I've been too busy snuggling and loving on this small, but mighty one. Say hello to my new son 😊
I'm curious Academia Twitter: for diplomas (B.S., M.S., PhD), do y'all have them framed and if so, how fancy of a frame did you put it in? I figured that it might finally hang up my PhD diploma somewhere and wanna see something 🤔
Hey y'all! I'm Kevin Cox-an
@HHMINEWS
Hanna Gray Fellow at the
@DanforthCenter
. I study plant diseases at a single-cell level to figure out how plants & microbes talk to each other. I also use YouTube & Twitch for
#scicomm
and just to have fun with games! 1/2
#BlackBotanistsWeek
It's
#BHM
! Last year I highlighted 28 Black Botanists, one each day. And I'm back at it again with another 28! Meet Patrick Thomas
@soylentSG
, a PhD Candidate at
@UCRiverside
! Patrick studies Whitefly resistance and hormone response in alfalfa. 1/28🧵
Outside of lab, I do outreach by visiting elementary schools to do fun science activities! I also have a YouTube and Twitch channel where I play video games or make videos to educate ppl on science! Feel free to check them out!

Day 2 of
#BlackBotanistsWeek
is
#PlantInteractions
! Plants can get diseases from pathogens, just like us. When you have get plants/crops that get sick and die, there's less food to go around, leading to higher prices in stores! An example of this is a disease on citrus. 1/5
Not gonna lie....never would I have thought I would ever give a day's opening speech for a major scientific conference. Guess I can mark that off my bucket list! Looking forward to day 2 at
#PlantBio20
! (Also, I cringed rewatching this btw) 😅😅
Probably my biggest highlights of 2023 were the birth of my son and securing a faculty position. While there won't be any more new clones added (I hope 🤣), I'm excited to start my lab this year. 👨🏾🔬🧬 Wishing everyone a successful 2024!!
Yesterday I turned 31. While being a scientist has ups and downs (and I mean A LOT of downs 😅), one thing I can consistently count on every year is the love and support from my wife and two girls.
So here's one of my big announcements I've been meaning to share:
They say that good things come in threes so.....my wife and I will be welcoming our third child (and our first son) this late October! 😄🎉👶🏾
Finally did a thing as a
#NewPI
: I made my lab's website!! Not 100% finished but it's complete enough that I feel comfortable to share it - happy to hear feedback!
#NewPI
update: Lab renovations over at WashU are complete enough to start moving equipment/items in! Lots of boxes are coming my way in the foreseeable future!
March 13th at 8:29pm, my wife and I welcomed our second daughter, coming in at 6lbs, 5oz! The smirk she has is probably letting us know that she's going to have a bit of a dramatic personality; something we're starting to notice already. 😅😅
#GirlDad
I looked on my Google Scholar this morning and found this. Do I get a medal or plaque...or something? No?...😂😂
But wow!! 100 citations on my 1st first author paper I published while in grad school four years ago!! Hoping for a career that blesses me many more!!🥳🥳
It's
#BHM
so you know what that means? Yep-a thread of 28 Days of 28 Black Botanists from me for the 3rd yr in a row! 1st up,
@LifeAboveAvG
, a PhD student at
@WUSTLdbbs
&
@DanforthCenter
! Antonio combines root phenomics and social science to help urban farmers grow better crops.
I consider myself a late bloomer (plant pun 😂). I didn't get into plant biology until the end of my JR year
@umsl
. It was during this time that I got a part-time lab assistant job at Danforth. Then I did my PhD
@TAMU
in Plant Pathology before returning. A full circle!😅 2/3
The Cox Lab is looking for 1-2 postdocs to join us! If you have an interest/expertise in single-cell/spatial transcriptomics, imaging, and/or plant-microbe interactions, I encourage you to apply!
I hope the science community is paying close attention to their Black colleagues' response to the Rittenhouse verdict. We're mad, but not surprised at all.
If you haven't realized why we believe our Justice system is messed up, you need to read that last sentence above again.
Is it just me or is there anyone else having trouble "getting back into the swing of things" after the holiday break (such as organizing experiments or day to day tasks)?
#AcademicChatter
28 days, 28 Black botanists. I enjoyed highlighting different Early Career Black botanists/plant scientists each day of

@Fanfiber
for the shirt design! 😂🎵🎧
Milestone as
#NewPI
: Just got the email today that I have officially hired my first person to my team. I guess it's really starting to set in now, huh?....
For
#BlackBotanistsAtWork
my day involves working with small things! I spend alot of time @ the microscopes & cryostat to cut & collect thin plant material. My goal is to map out the locations of plant genes; think of it as drawing the state borders/cities on a blank USA map! 1/2
Thrilled to "ExPOSE" our preprint! We present ExPOSE: a comprehensive toolkit to perform expansion microscopy in plant protoplasts. Great collaborative work with

A couple of
#NewPI
updates! Over at the WashU lab, we're MANY boxes deep from our lab equipment orders! And over at the Danforth Center, the lab made its karaoke debut at the scientific retreat! It sounds like we would've won "People's Choice" if that was a category! 😅😅
I'm away at a conference! ....Well sort of lol 😅. Figured I would attend my first maize meeting since it's right in my backyard. Met some familiar faces last night after some great talks. If anyone at
#MGM2023
wants to catch up or meet, hit me up!
Quick photo dump for
#PlantsInside
my home! I will point out that while I do work on plants at the lab, I still have a couple plants at home that are "stubborn" 🤣🤣. It happens to the best of us so don't feel bad if your plants are struggling!
#BlackBotanistsWeek2022
Some of y'all may think this is exaggerated or that this is just a small sample size....it's not. 😑 I can tell you that the number of Black faculty/post-docs/students in plant biology I met in grad school can easily be counted with one hand. We got to do better.

#BlackLivesMatter
Naomi Osaka's situation reminded me that we need to stop normalizing "all work, no days off" as a flex. I was guilty of that at one point in my life; even now I still am at times. We need to stop feeling guilty for taking time off. It recharges us physically and mentally.
