Sadly, the City of Burien added to this toll last night. A man overdosed in the City Hall/Library bathroom. We continue to have the County Executive and County Sheriff not enforce any of our public camping laws, leading to continued deaths on the street.
Look at the three states leading the way in drug deaths: OR, WA, and CA. Those same three states have toyed with decriminalization of drugs and permissive harm reduction policies.

While the state of WA needs to create a million homes over the next decade, this is not only a housing crisis. It is, by far and away, a substance abuse and mental health crisis. King County electeds and appointed officials have essentially said it's not their problem.
Homelessness in Seattle and King County reached record levels in the 2024 Point-In-Time count. Government officials say a housing shortage is to blame.
@ne0liberal
I'm shocked by this too. We should be accessible to all who desire liberty and justice, freedom and democracy. Especially those fleeing autocratic regimes.

Hey Rep. Fitzgibbon, it's Mayor Kevin Schilling of Burien. As a matter of fact, Burien has permitted and approved and will be building 657 units of PSH and low income affordable housing this year and into next year, reaching half our regional housing goal.
Wait a second: Executive Constantine praised the SCOTUS decision on homelessness? Then why on Earth is he and his Sheriff suing the City of Burien over a law squarely in line with the Constitution, a law that now he's praising the foundational/ Constitutional merits of and for?

Okay, I know it's not the 1990s but how about Battlestar Galactica? I think it's prime for a political analysis.
The president early on is bent on re-establishing democratic norms, then becomes authoritarian, then led by the gods. Where we at with that?
The County Executive's and County Sheriff's decision to arbitrarily not enforce any part of the City of Burien's public camping ordinance, including the daytime camping restriction which is not a part of their concerns, continue to lead to drug related deaths.
It's truly devastating when any individual loses their life to an overdose within the confines of public buildings, such as city hall. This tragedy underscores the critical need for compassionate, community-centered responses. Implementing comprehensive support systems, including
Here's my full statement on the King County Sheriff's Deputies' letter:

I wrote my master's dissertation on the history of U.S. involvement in Central America vying for canal building rights and jockeying constantly between Panama and Nicaragua. Our 99 year lease option in Nicaragua is up. Guess who bought the new 99 year option? China
I love this too. As someone who started his higher education at a community college (South Seattle Community College) while working full time at a grocery store, I know that community college students work incredibly hard to earn credentials. Go community colleges!
Community colleges deserve way more attention, and it’s incredibly cool to see a Senator taking the time recognize them by giving the commencement address at one.
This is the third overdose death on the streets and adds to the already 337 overdoses across the county. We need the Sheriff to start enforcing our public camping ordinance, and we need the county to actually provide services that get folks off of drugs and off the streets.

mentality has been incredible to my thinking as a policymaker and I will use it for years to come. Wealth creation has to be utilized to grow strong towns, and we have to listen to neighborhoods.
Far past time for KCRHA to be reformed entirely by the King County Council. The longer the wait, the less gets done. While staff get paid, folks stay on the street. We need a regional org that actually does outreach and shelter operations. Not just wasting time and tax dollars.
King County Regional Homelessness Authority's interim CEO withdrew his candidacy for the permanent job, writing a letter about the many problems with the job.

"Increasing licensing"? Why not just more efficiently help street venders get licensing that they need to operate? Definitely doesn't sound like Yang has this one totally figured out yet.

The County gov should be focused on continuing to increase the supply of housing of all kinds, getting folks off the streets into treatment for drugs and mental health services, secure occupational support, while handling any criminal activity associated with drugs as well.
@KJSchilling94
You think if they can’t camp in public that will solve the drug epidemic happening? Or will you just be blissfully ignorant to it if they are out of sight.
Get a grip dude. This was a problem long before council tried to enforce an unconstitutional law. Stop blaming the sheriff.
If this is the case, pretty sure it's time to drop your lawsuit now Dow. You can't publicly praise a SCOTUS decision and then actively stop yourself from enforcing a law that fits the legal parameters you're praising.
This is a scandal. The state has spent billions on homelessness, and it's worse. Also, outcomes literally mean everything when it comes to homeless services, and unsurprisingly, they have no data. A full independent audit must be done. Now.
@GavinNewsom
We are disappointed the Sheriff has unilaterally decided not to enforce a law passed by the democratically elected city council. And we look forward to the decisions of the courts.

taught me the importance of civil discourse and exchange. We need more, in-depth, smart discourse about issues, not less.
I just want to make sure city leaders are using data and facts instead of lazy political comments that serve no one.
From KCRHA:
Burien spends 2.2% of our budget on homelessness services, which accounts for $19 per capita.
Renton - only 0.3% of its budget and $7 per capita.
Sitting on the exec board for the South King Housing & Homelessness Partners (SKHHP), this is what it’s about: a regional, collaborative approach to housing & homelessness. Other cities could take note rather than act like their city is too good for this regional issue

Unfortunately for your theory, my dad served on the USS-Narwhal nuclear submarine, launched in 1967. And it was the third US sub to be named after the Narwhal, the first being launched in 1909. So someone who grew up in the 19th century had some idea!
Another blow to the radical harm reductionists and drug legalization activists. Decriminalization of open air drug use was unwise, radical, and caused great harm to the community. A complete failure. Let's now focus on treatment and recovery.

Citizens should be begging King County to stop playing games, and start seriously investing in substance use disorder and mental health crisis services like the regional issue this is.
Last night's primaries prove that the center-left is still strong, and when we take primaries seriously, we can easily win against the far-left candidates that have been costing Democrats votes and eroding our support with the working class.

I don't think Trump understands how unwise it is for him to make faith a central part of his campaign. He has made decisions that directly counter the majority of Christian ethics and morality.

The City of Burien just approved the approval of a neighborhood based business, updated our at home business licenses to allow them more effectively and are currently looking to expand the opportunity of neighborhood corner stores
@UrbanistOrg
But another error here is the downplaying of the addiction crisis amongst the homeless. Whether it's a primary cause or not is almost irrelevant as it's an anchor to the streets. That's a fact.
For years we've heard from the police about the short comings of county service providers and the need to get drugs and public camping under control. Then, with a council that wants to do that in place, we're now in this scenario where the Sheriff is not enforcing those laws.
Absolutely. In downtown Burien we have the potential to do this. Remax has just built a second story unit for office space and I hope it starts a trend.

And then deciding that cutting unemployment benefits, while giving corporations meal deductions, is a common good goal! Keeping America Great one corporate bailout at a time.
This is absolutely unacceptable & sadly, not an isolated incident. I have said many times that State agencies must do a better job in vetting and providing oversight for these groups that over promise, undeliver, & steal resources that are meant to serve our most vulnerable. 1/2

Two other quick stats. I'm glad the legislature funded 72 behavorial health beds at Cascade Hospital (across the street from Burien) and 96 behavorial health beds at NAVOS right in Burien. Burien is doing quite a bit for the region and state. Happy to discuss more.
@typewriteralley
and I can't wait to sign more. Before I was mayor (but while on council), Burien approved 95 units of PSE with DESC, a Habitat for Humanity Project, an EcoThrive project, hundreds of affordable units, and hundreds of market rate.
Can't wait to make it easier to build in Burien!
@joefitzgibbon
As a State Rep for Burien, and former member of Burien's planning commission yourself, I'd hope you'd have already known that information and would be collaborating and partnering to ensure our success. Hopefully more of that will happen. I invite you to come to Burien anytime.
When I'm speaking with neighbors the major civic issues on everyone's minds are homelessness, police, and inflation. Every candidate running for office should be speaking about all three. And if elected should be prepared to work together to address these civic issues.
The Burien City Council appreciates the work of the deputies and officers in protecting Burien. We understand they are in a difficult position while this political issue plays out.
Finally a reason for me to indulge in explaining my master's dissertation to a wider audience! Canals are important and the U.S. has known that for centuries. Governments, militaries, and private sector donors have all been interested in a second canal in Central America.

is tough to watch. It should be. There must be absolutely no question in anyone's mind, nor in history, that what the Trump administration did to families was immoral, cruel, and unusual punishment. This is not what government is here to do.
@joefitzgibbon
I'd be happy to walk you through the sites in your own district that I listed above and the great work the City of Burien is doing to meet our regional housing goals. It's time for folks to actually look at data and numbers, and stop silly politics. Especially in your own LD.
A judge has not ruled that this law is unconstitutional, but instead, it falls squarely in line with federal requirements as well as in line with the argument of the administration of President Joseph Biden:

Totally agree. That's why Burien's Comprehensive Plan is going to be fully in line with HB1110 requirements and get us to the 2050 goals. Super excited about that!
Burien Police Officers are employed by the County Sheriff' Office and are Sheriff's Deputies. They are here to protect and serve our community every day.
You know what's sexy? Transit Oriented Development. Expanded light rail throughout the Puget Sound. High speed rail through Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. Expanded airport capacity. Less carbon emissions. All possible. All sexy.
Yesterday's primaries were a strong indicator, once again, that voters are ready for common sense government approaches that are accountable to taxpayers, get real results, and keep communities and individuals safe.
No more chemistry set expirements on our cities. We demand public safety, clean streets and recovery for those struggling with addiction. Time to get on this train and end this madness. No more radicals.
