Sadly, the City of Burien added to this toll last night. A man overdosed in the City Hall/Library bathroom. We continue to have the County Executive and County Sheriff not enforce any of our public camping laws, leading to continued deaths on the street.
Look at the three states leading the way in drug deaths: OR, WA, and CA. Those same three states have toyed with decriminalization of drugs and permissive harm reduction policies.

While the state of WA needs to create a million homes over the next decade, this is not only a housing crisis. It is, by far and away, a substance abuse and mental health crisis. King County electeds and appointed officials have essentially said it's not their problem.
Homelessness in Seattle and King County reached record levels in the 2024 Point-In-Time count. Government officials say a housing shortage is to blame.

Hey Rep. Fitzgibbon, it's Mayor Kevin Schilling of Burien. As a matter of fact, Burien has permitted and approved and will be building 657 units of PSH and low income affordable housing this year and into next year, reaching half our regional housing goal.

Wait a second: Executive Constantine praised the SCOTUS decision on homelessness? Then why on Earth is he and his Sheriff suing the City of Burien over a law squarely in line with the Constitution, a law that now he's praising the foundational/ Constitutional merits of and for?
The effects that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling will have on Washington cities remain to be seen as different jurisdictions start to interpret it.

I love this too. As someone who started his higher education at a community college (South Seattle Community College) while working full time at a grocery store, I know that community college students work incredibly hard to earn credentials. Go community colleges!
Community colleges deserve way more attention, and it’s incredibly cool to see a Senator taking the time recognize them by giving the commencement address at one.

This is the third overdose death on the streets and adds to the already 337 overdoses across the county. We need the Sheriff to start enforcing our public camping ordinance, and we need the county to actually provide services that get folks off of drugs and off the streets.

Far past time for KCRHA to be reformed entirely by the King County Council. The longer the wait, the less gets done. While staff get paid, folks stay on the street. We need a regional org that actually does outreach and shelter operations. Not just wasting time and tax dollars.
King County Regional Homelessness Authority's interim CEO withdrew his candidacy for the permanent job, writing a letter about the many problems with the job.

From KCRHA:
Burien spends 2.2% of our budget on homelessness services, which accounts for $19 per capita.
Renton - only 0.3% of its budget and $7 per capita.
Sitting on the exec board for the South King Housing & Homelessness Partners (SKHHP), this is what it’s about: a regional, collaborative approach to housing & homelessness. Other cities could take note rather than act like their city is too good for this regional issue

For years we've heard from the police about the short comings of county service providers and the need to get drugs and public camping under control. Then, with a council that wants to do that in place, we're now in this scenario where the Sheriff is not enforcing those laws.

Two other quick stats. I'm glad the legislature funded 72 behavorial health beds at Cascade Hospital (across the street from Burien) and 96 behavorial health beds at NAVOS right in Burien. Burien is doing quite a bit for the region and state. Happy to discuss more.

Yesterday's primaries were a strong indicator, once again, that voters are ready for common sense government approaches that are accountable to taxpayers, get real results, and keep communities and individuals safe.

we're about to hire a new outreach service provider to get folks off the street, we've invested in our Co-Responder public safety model, and we're bringing in new employers.
Burien is doing everything in those categories I mentioned. The County has to pick up the pace.
