The Catholic Church is an important moral force, critical humanitarian actor and will play an essential role in shaping humane migration policy. Here my contribution in @americamag on three ways the church can rise to the occasion in a time of trial.

"We are motivated by the Gospel of Jesus Christ to cherish, preserve and uphold the sacredness and dignity of all human life, foster charity and justice, and embody Catholic social and moral teaching..." @CatholicRelief mission statement
JD Vance speaking at the International Religious Freedom Summit, saying the US has been sending "thousands of taxpayer dollars abroad to NGOs dedicated to spreading atheism." That may(?) be a USAID reference, but the #1 recipient of USAID funding is Catholic Relief Services.

There’s no distinction. Catholic Charities is at the heart of the US Catholic Church. Catholics work in, volunteer for, give to, and pray for Catholic Charities and those it serves, in communities large and small across the United States. Many parts, one body. @CCharitiesUSA
@KDaniels8 No, the vice president accused Catholic Charities, not Catholics in general, of enabling child trafficking, and serving migrants and refugees in order to improve their bottom line.

Vance's attack on the Catholic Church over its care of immigrants isn't out of the blue. For years, GOP leaders have levied similar attacks. It's part of the ongoing assault on and distrust of US institutions. And the deep divisions in Christianity.

@becketfund It all comes down to an old strategy: politicians targeting Catholics for political gain. /end
