I got way too excited during this and talked
@oheyspun
's ear off for a whole hour 😂😂
This will be my first interview ever about the world of
@playSUPERVIVE
!!
I am so excited to announce that next week I will be sharing with the world
@playSUPERVIVE
's FIRST ever LORE interview.
👉I had the opportunity to sit down with
@JustinGroot3
and discuss everything from Voice Acting to Narrative and Lore. (its over 45 minutes long)
Sound on.
you should see the chain hook script bro. it looks like every subway map in the world layered on top of itself. it is legendary . a butterfly flaps its wings in that script and you get this scenario 2,000 visual scripting nodes away
THEY SAID THE NUMBER ON STREAM SO I CAN FINALLY SAY IT HERE
We've written . . . 25,000 !! new voice lines ,, for Overwatch 2 ✍️💥 !!!!!!!!!!!!! twenty five thousand twenty five thousand twenty five ThOuSaND
A lot of my proudest contributions to Overwatch 2 are little spontaneous impulses like this... ☺️
"What if Announcer Roadhog tries to introduce the heroes, but he doesn't know most of their names, so he has to make stuff up?"
THREAD TIME BUCKLE UP
One thing that's NEW about narrative design in Overwatch 2 is greatly increased "reactivity"--aka, very specific voice lines that respond to very specific gameplay events.
The goal? Reward players for their coolest accomplishments with special VO!

We have several of these "reflex" elimination lines scattered across the cast.👟👟 The window to trigger them is VERY small. Predicting--or reacting to--a Tracer blink, Sombra relocate, Genji dash etc. feels awesome, and we wanted your hero to celebrate it with you!
Overwatch 2 is finally out and i just feel so proud of my whole team... the last few years were not easy but we pushed through and made a great game 🥹🥹
One small thing we did in the Overwatch 2 beta, not sure if anyone caught it:
Pharah's Concussive Blast voice lines are now contextual. 💥 She'll say stuff like "Repositioning!" if she only moved herself and no enemies; "Move!" etc. if she moved an enemy...
(1/2)
so many people have left during my time on the team that i can't even sign the kudoboards any more . i hate the very sight of an email with "kudoboard" in the title field
Thought about making this one only trigger on King's Row but I was worried it would be a little TOO obscure... 😂 y'all are starting to find the really derangedly specific ones...
look i'm biased but I think Overwatch 2 gameplay is actually extremely fun & polished & massively improved over the original game & when this thing launches on october 4 I think it's going to POP OFF 🦾🦍🐹⚡️🪐☄️✨✨
retweet if you 🧐agree 🤔 that we wrote 25,000 new voice lines for Overwatch 2, 😱😲many of them new interactions between our characters and/or contextual to the exact stuff happening in your gameplay 💯🎮✨✨😱🙏👟🤯🤔🤔
...and stuff like "Concussive out!" if the ability hasn't hit anyone by the time the line plays.
Might seem like a tiny change, but polish like this is part of our goal to make the moment-to-moment VO experience in Overwatch 2 as "smart" and responsive as possible. 😊

look that's life. you get ur friends together & do your best. sometimes people give u a high five. sometimes 86,000 people call u an idiot for stuff outside ur control. u gotta focus on the high fives man that's the secret
Everybody I work with pushed so hard to do something substantial for Pride this year!! Really proud to be part of this team!! It's about damn time!!! 🏳️🌈
As this trailer hints, all 7 of the new Greek Mythology skins have a whole bunch of custom VO lines, including special kill lines, respawn lines, nano boost lines, etc.! ⚡️⚡️
I had so much fun writing these... definitely one of my favorite assignments ever 😊😊
Honored and thrilled to announce that I'm joining the
@PlayOverwatch
team as a narrative designer!
This is an incredible opportunity. Can't express what it means to me. The team is amazing. I'm going to work my butt off... there's so much to learn...
OVERWATCH 2⃣ , AWARD-WINNING FPS VIDEOGAME W/ SOME OF THE BEST CHARACTERS IN THA INDUSTRY😱😱😱, comes to STEAM on AUGUST 10 🤯🤯🤯, w/ CO-OP PvE STORY MISSIONS, new very epic core game mode FLASHPOINT 🔥🔥, amazing new SUPPORT HERO 😱😱, bazillion VOICE LINES--
Overwatch 2 is my dream job. I love my work & my team.
But I'm finding all the hostility from exec leadership incredibly discouraging. Shredding HR docs? Forcing victims under NDAs?
How are we supposed to feel good about working for these guys?
"I believe it is likely that Overwatch 2 has more voice lines, contextual to more situations, than any multiplayer shooter in history."
~ me, in this interview:
look all i'm saying is that 55,000 reviews of any kind is an accomplishment. You're telling me at least 55,000 people know about the game??? Teenage me, making stuff in Game Maker 6.0, could never have dreamed 😂
In Overwatch 1 most "rare" lines simply had a low probability to play, like 1 in 100 times a given type of line triggered.
In Overwatch 2, we've added more of those, but we've also added lots of lines that are rare because they only trigger in rare gameplay situations.
2/6
ty everybody for being nice. the job is still extremely cool my teammates are extremely cool and overwatch itself is extremely cool. and we have the most extremely cool fans. BROADCASTING MUCH LOVE INTO THE UNIVERSE 🌌🪐🛰️🚀
IMO killing a hero during their ultimate is one of the most satisfying plays in Overwatch... lines like this are an attempt to celebrate players for pulling it off!!😊
There are other rare achievements we're trying to celebrate too... e.g. the long-range kill lines popping up...
cannot believe that my most iconic overwatch line is going to be "Wait till you see me on my bike." I miss when it was "I will eat more dumplings than anyone has ever eaten" and the brief period of time during beta when it was "Good looks are not enough"
Contextual respawn lines seem like a cool design space so we've been experimenting with them a little bit! 🖥️ Let us know what you think esp. if you get them in real-game situations! 🧑💻🤔
Hey so, Ramattra has a respawn specific line that plays ONLY if you die immediately after getting a multi-elim. He says, “they paid a high price to delay me” and then does a villainous laugh. I screamed!!
As in Overwatch 1, we have tons of lines for killing or interacting with specific heroes, but we've taken it a step further this time.
So e.g., in Overwatch 2, Junkrat says something special when he kills an ulting Reaper at very long range...

@talontheraptor
yeah, unfortunately i didn't have time to come up with something for everyone... it was basically one quick brainstorming hour before our deadline... maybe in the future we'll complete the cast ^_^
Lead narrative designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyrhie, directing his calm, leonine gaze into my eyeballs after receiving yet another excel document full of my proposed Overwatch 2 voice lines: "Very stupid. However--we can go stupider."
The Overwatch narrative design team has added a lot of subtle character work and details into OW2, and also, some of the dumbest jokes you can possibly imagine.
I’m very proud of us.
...but overall we hope all the new reactivity will make the heroes feel more alive, so that they celebrate your greatest accomplishments along with you, and continue to surprise you game after game!
6/6
We've done a ton of work on the backend to detect rare situations, and to centralize & prioritize our VO system so that we can play the coolest possible line at any given moment...
5/6
I don't want to spoil all the new types of situation we're accounting for, but here's an example that was already available in the last beta: Hanzo's lines for getting a kill with Sonic Arrow --

it's my 31st birthday & everything is honestly going great. 🎂 feeling blessed blessed blessed blessed. btw play Overwatch 2 when it launches on October 4!!!!
i think this is all natural: you get a bunch of creative and passionate developers in a room, they're going to have a tendency to bite off more than they can chew.
But the challenge is prioritization & controlling scope, not getting people to work harder. 🫡💪🌈✨
(6/6)
glad y'all finally found this one. i'm almost positive it was in there at release😂 ...just extremely, EXTREMELY rare. It's also an ad-lib by
@FredTatasciore
btw !!!!
even with marvelous producers like ours, there are always so many things that feel like they need to be done RIGHT NOW, and never enough people to do them
(2/6)
jeff kaplan could actually write a mean fantastic 4 movie if he wanted to. this is a man with writing experience & excellent taste in short story collections (one morning we discussed Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson for like 2 hrs)
most of the devs I know also find the work extremely engaging and couldn't imagine doing anything else. if anything there's a risk that the job takes over your life
(3/6)
@ClearTogether
this actually played because kiriko killed a nano-boosted target . . . might need a rewrite since this clip demonstrates it could be pretty confusing in context 😂
it's also tempting to look at some specific feature and assume it's a whole person's job to build & maintain it. But it's likely that the person who owns that feature has a lot of other responsibilities too
(5/6)
When cassidy sticks someone with a grenade, 1 of his lines is "Got a burr in your side." However, if he sticks someone with a grenade while NANO-BOOSTED, about 1 in 10 times he will say -- get this -- "Got a NANO-burr in your side."
i will accept my pulitzer now 🫴
fwiw i would mind working in an office a lot less if that office were located in a place where it didn't cost 9 billion dollars to rent a studio apartment
going private for a little bit :^) if you're reading this, you are now in a very selective "Elite Few" of uh (checks notes) three thousand, seven hundred and thirty-one,
I have received word that
@A_Seagull
, in a recent video, described the Overwatch narrative design team as follows: "they're actually just god-tier. I don't know how they're so good." 🥹 kind words chief thank u
every day i feel so grateful to work on something people care so much about 🥹 all i have ever wanted to do is make stuff that made people happy. whole team is like this. we are very grateful for everybody who gets some joy out of what we make, frfrfr
.
@ZhangJoshi
led narrative design for Illari--came up with her backstory, wrote all her lines, etc.--and did such a fantastic job!!! Can't wait for y'all to play this hero, she is SO COOL!!! ☀️☀️☀️
i had so much fun writing dialogue for the Gothenburg story mission btw!!!! Such fun characters, such a fun mission. It was awesome working with all the other folks who contributed. If you try it out, I hope you have a blast !!!
forgot to ask if y'all liked Cyber Demon Genji's voice lines. ⚡️⚔️ i think that's the most custom voice lines we've ever added to a skin? feel free to tell me i am wrong about this?
other stuff in this category:
- Winston says "Nano Jump!"/"Power Jump!" when he uses leap while nano-boosted (what a dork)
- Heroes have special lines for eliminating an enemy version of themselves
- Lucio asks everybody their favorite animal (plus a lot of the responses)
@EskayOW
im afraid 2 say because people will yell at me 🫣 however i will point out, apropos of nothing, that Soldier: 76 is a vigilante whose showering opportunities are likely few and far between, & no amount of athletic-scented aerosol deodorant is likely to compensate for this😬
cannot believe that the videogame i work on is entering beta in 9 days. idk if u are excited but i am about to explode. whole team has poured their hearts into this thing and i just want everybody to love it as much as we do !!!!!!
ONE really cool thing is when a friend messages me like DUDE did this voice line in Overwatch 2 play because of X really specific circumstance?? , and I'm like NO but the fact that you THOUGHT it did means the rest of 'em are working 😈😈😈
We're hiring an Associate Narrative Designer on the Overwatch 2 team! We want to hear from diverse voices! Please share and if you're excited about the opportunity, APPLY!
@JasperBoerstra
extremely well said 😔 we have already experienced this a lot on my team over the past few years. it's frustrating that leadership doesn't understand what a challenge it's been to pick up the pieces. and now it seems like we're going to have another round of departures.
SO MANY incredibly talented people have spent SO MUCH time working on Overwatch 2 PvP and it is SO fresh in terms of gameplay design & sound design & narrative design & art & & & & & & .. . . . . I just think people are going to like it ok !?!?!?!!! 🙏🫣
btw "Mr. Nanners" and "The Bavarian Buffet" were suggestions from VO Director Extraordinaire
@KalElBogdanove
during our voice session with
@CrankyJ
... love working with these guys!!!😂🫡
