@BestForBritain Oops
FYI, I've now had a chance to read the Frontier Economics report (for @BestForBritain) which modelled the effects of closer UK-EU 'cooperation', and here is what it actually says... 1⃣ even taking the results at face value, the most ambitious proposals for 'deep alignment in goods and services' with the EU would boost UK GDP by less than 0.4% in the short term (one year). My view: every little helps, but to get this small gain the UK would have to accept EU rules, foregoing any Brexit benefits from smarter regulation and making it harder to do new trade deals. 2⃣ the headline-grabbing figure of 'up to 2.2%' for the boost to UK growth is the upper end of the 1.7% to 2.2% range for the 'long-term impact'; the report does not specify the horizon here, but the OBR usually takes the 'long term' to mean 15 years. My views: these bigger numbers rely on the same questionable assumptions about the link between small changes in trade openness and productivity as the OBR's analysis; in reality, there is unlikely to be much impact in an advanced economy like the UK which will remain relatively open. Moreover, and again even taking the results at face value, an additional 2.2% in total growth over 15 years is not a big deal. For example, the economy might otherwise grow by 25% over this period, based on compounding annual growth of 1.5%, so we are talking here about the (small) difference between growth of 25% and growth of just over 27%. My takeaway: the Frontier Economics report has helpfully demonstrated that any potential benefits from closer UK-EU 'cooperation' are a sideshow when compared with the much bigger challenges and opportunities facing the UK economy!
