@jdmccafferty Thanks for the Interesting stuff about Waller junior anyway. Waller senior is currently on my mind as I'll be in Winchester Cathedral tomorrow and will be looking at what his troops got up to in 1642.

@jdmccafferty Hi. I think I was confused by the picture which is, I think, of William Waller senior who died in the late 1660s.

Today should always be a day of celebration - the anniversary of our departure from the EU. While we have not yet taken full advantage of all the opportunities, Brexit still gives hope for the future.  To find out why, read or listen to my article this week:

@BLMedieval @Castles4kids1 This I love! I think that Froissart mentions something similar during the Hundred Years War.

@SoultonHall Interesting. Where can I read more about their relationship? PS I must come on one of your guided visits, if I can make the dates work.

@SoultonHall Many thanks. I initially looked at the Gate of Honour as primarily the splendid culmination of a student's journey through the other symbolic gates in the college but I'll take a closer look at the detail and design when I'm up there next week.

@DrFrancisYoung @beatricegroves1 It is indeed. And add to that Keys's interest in creating a healthy environment by specifically avoiding having an enclosed court. I don't think Keys lived to see the building of the Gate of Honour though I think it was built to his specifications.

@beatricegroves1 I'm glad I didn't have to write that! I can see that both college and Fairie Queene symbolise virtues but I wouldn't know what else to say

I rather like the variations in the spellings of the royal motto at Hampton Court Palace. We have the traditional 'Dieu et mon droit' but we also have 'Deo et mun droit' and, my absolute favorite, ' Deo et mun drit' #tudors #hamptoncourtpalace #heraldry #motto

Taking advantage of the break in the weather and having a wander round Hampton Court Palace. Here are some standard shots. Some quirkier stuff will follow... #tudors #hamptoncourtpalace #blueskythinking #brick

Tucked away in a corner of Holy Trinity Church in Guildford is the slightly disturbing tomb of Archbishop of Canterbury George Abbot. In 1621 Abbot found himself at the centre of some controversy when he accidentally shot dead a gamekeeper with his crossbow while out hunting.

@AlfieHouseEcho That 1 was me. And I wish I hadn't gone. Honestly, watching Saints at the moment is like visiting a sick relative.
