RTÈ NEWS AT SIX reporting how 12members of East Cork IRA Flying Column shot dead by Crown forces 101 years ago today. President Higgins honouring them and stressing the need to ‘remember the mens’ courage and values’ . A speck of irony in there somewhere ?
Doug Beattie, leader of the UUP, is outraged at Ireland soccer team singing “OO aah, up the Rah!” Yet he appears unperturbed by his own description of sticking a bayonet into a human being in the Middle East. Is there a moral contradiction here?
William Crawley just now: “There was a time when you couldn’t get Sinn Féin and the DUP in the one room!” How do such remarks never get followed by the illuminating addition “SF were v willing but the DUP refused point blank”?The whole truth is always so much more enlightening…
My beloved brother Paddy died in Auckland New Zealand today (Christmas Eve here, Christmas Day there). He was an intelligent, good and generous man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis - May he rest in peace.
If critics are instantly appalled 10/10 re John Finucane and his emergency leak, what is their appalled level re his having to watch his father murdered when he was eight years old? Or have they still not decided after 30 years?
Just listened on Talkback to a learned discussion on Ulster Scots. Either they were afraid to say or didn't know, but no one mentioned that Ulster Scots is a dialect, not a language...
“Even in the worst of the Troubles no funeral was ever stopped”- Fr Gary Donegal on suspect device disrupting a funeral today. Um- I seem to remember RUC attacking people with coffins of IRA volunteers. Was that all a bad dream I had??
Just heard Colum Eastwood explaining how he'd be staying at home on Paddy's Day, to register his protest at the US's policy on Israel. I guess that means he'll be staying away from Westminster too, in protest at the UK's policy on Israel. It's called consistency...
"Loyalist paramilitaries today told the Prime Minister..." - Rose Neill on UTV yesterday evening. EH?? Isn't being a loyalist paramilitary illegal any more?
So all that stuff about choosing to identify as Irish or British or both was just old guff. What other parts of the GFA are makey- uppy - the bit about 50%+1?
I heard W Crawley talk about the Ulster Museum and the vexed question of things stolen or taken from a colonial past, and whether they should be returned. I'm just wondering: would this include land??
'if the nationalist community continues to grow and if there is a poll we could well be outvoted on it...Where does that leave the unionists pushed into a united Ireland?' -Iain Carlisle chief executive of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.
Democracy - what a bummer!
The Irish Times in its editorial today urges FF+ FG to form a government, iand adds t "Both parties have, for valid reasons, ruled out a deal with SF". EH? What reasons? How are they valid? We deserve to know...
Just listened on Raidio Uladh to Michéal Murphy, who's written a book critical of🤓 the UDR. The man who was on to defend the UDR said that in the early days, the UDR was "a bit like Dad's Army". You get the idea - they were funny, fumbling, loveable. That was the UDR. Right?😉
Astonishing tripe being talked on Talkback: anguished outcry about the stripping away of unionist identity. They’d need 10,000 wrecking balls to strip Belfast of its British symbolism - the city is stiff withstatues, buildings, roads, institutions. This is paranoia on steroids
J Allister and R Beggs sternly disapproving on UTV LIVE of G Kelly and the wheel clamp liberation. SHOCKING! ! And Gary Haggarty killing Catholics with state aid? The sound of unionist silence...
"All the Protestant/unionist/loyalist community want is “for things to stay the same”, says Valerie Quinn, chair of the Ulster Bands Forum. And sure why wouldn't they?
Heart-breaking account of Aidan McAnespie's killing by a British soldier 30 years ago on Miriam O'Callaghan RTE radio. Irish government: release the Crowley Report on his death NOW. Regina Doherty: would you say Aidan brought it all on himself?
William Crawley talking about serial killer Dennis Nilsen and the “dark shadowy “ world of such people. Did I miss the bit where he discussed’Unquiet Graves’ which is on TV tonight?
I'm pleased to report that my publishers (Mercier Press) have sold out their first print run of 'Martin McGuinnness: The Man I Knew' (4,000 copies) and have ordered a second print run.
David McNarry on NOLAN this morning, championing free speech for loyalist paramilitaries and their right to express an opinion on Brexit. Oddly he went a bit berserk + called me every name in his limited vocab when I said I believed the OO was an anti-Catholic organisation.
I've a book about Martin McGuinness coming out later this month. See the pic for details. ALL are welcome, and I'll be happy to sign on whatever part of your anatomy you point to ...
Here’s DUP MLA William Humphreys in the middle of a large crowd last week. Will the DUP be asking him to stand aside pending a policing investigation?

The GAA need to take steps to reciprocate Mrs Foster’s gesture, and do things to make the organisation more inclusive.” - Jim Wells
“We reaffirm our opposition to the introduction of any form of legislation for the Irish language." - Orange Order resolution for Twelfth
Paisley case clear - he broke rules governing expenses. McElduff case was one of interpretation of fact: he fooled about with loaf so MUST have been acting in a sectarian manner. Everyone who knows McElduff - incl unionist politicians - know he's the opposite of sectarian.
Barry McElduff significantly lowered the bar in terms of political resignations in NI. Very difficult to see how the DUP can support Ian Paisley staying on as MP or as the party’s candidate in a bye-election.
Can you believe it? People's lives are being put at risk by UK government's insistence on doing it It's Way - and some journalists have a fit of the vapours because the word 'bastards' is used. FFS...
Lisa Chambers of Fianna Fail figures if votes in a border poll came out 50% +l in favour of Irish unity, that just wouldn't work. If 50% +1 voted to stay in the union with Britain, would that not work either?
Norma Foley nominated Micheál Martin for Taoiseach, quoting Shakespeare’s ‘To thine own self be true’ . Shakespeare put these words into the mouth of Polonius to show what a clichéd old fool he was. Should Michéal be told???
“It seems oddly fitting to the people of Ireland,” he says finally, “that Brexit is coming down to the backstop. The suggestion that the British government is making – that they won’t fuck us over – is laughable. That’s what they have done for 800 years.” - Chris O’Dowd...
What does Newton Emerson's "Sinn Féin still need house-training" mean? And what about John Finucane MP being told where he can and can't go in his constituency? Pat McArt and myself will be grappling with both issues mid-afternoon today. No prisoners taken...
Paul Givan as possible First Minister? The same Paul Givan who whipped away Gaeltacht bursaries from children and then said "Happy Christmas"? It's as if the DUP was working on losing friends and annoying people...
'Some of IRA's victims mistakenly killed as 'informers', files show'. -Guardian headline today.
Maybe more appropriate to check out the cover-and lies at Ballymurphy, Bloody Sunday and the like. Odd to condemn a neighbour's house-odour when you live in a veritable pig-stye.
Now that the Declan Kearney letter has caught fire and burned those keen on using it in TV debate, will anti-Shinners dig deep for a final last-minute dirt-ball to fire at Michelle O’Neill, or will weary resignation set in???
Let’s be clear, this shire of bastards are using everyone of us in some form of twisted medical experiment. Do you honestly believe the rest of Europe is wrong & this balloon and his ilk are right. If you are not angry it’s time to get angry, we are on the brink of disaster!
Mike Nesbitt on RTÉ's Marian Finucane Show just now: "We need to be very careful how we deal with our past". Too right, Mike. Otherwise a true picture of what actually happened might emerge - appalling vista, that.
Why wasn’t there a sense of disgust and outrage expressed on ‘The View’when John ODowd mentioned the slaughter of his relatives (among others) the day before the horror of Kingsmills? Or is that BBC balance?
Irish News headline: "Banner targeting Sinn Féin Lord Mayor John Finucane appears on the Shankill Road". If this happened in any other part of the Uk, it would be top of the news. Will that happen with BBC News at 6.30 pm, let alone 6.00pm tonight?
What is an unelected member of the OO doing in Westminster talking about democracy and the willof the people? Has he heard about the Remain majority in the six counties?
I seem to remember, when the DUP first announced that they’d be hooking up with the Tories, Gerry Adams tweeted that it would all end in tears... maybe Nigel and Co should have.listened ...

We deserve better- wasn’t that what civil rights movement was all about? Irish Language Act, Bill of Rights - who’s blocking those? Ah yes, the same old gang. Call it out, Arlene....
Much tut-tutting on Talkback just now about a gun-salute in Derry marking 40 years since death of INLA hunger-striker Mickey Devine. Wasn't there a 42-gun salute fired at the funeral of Prince Philip?
The Irish Freedom party advocating Irexit will meet today. Public are warned not to approach them but instead to contact the police. Or a psychiatrist. Or their mammies.
I hear a former DUP special adviser on Talkback, commenting as calls come in. Can we expect the impartial BBC to have a former Sinn Féin special adviser on Talkback next week?
So Jeremy Corbyn is suspended from Labour Party because he said claims of anti-Semitism were "drastically over-stated". From the day and hour he became leader, Corbyn has been undermined by colleagues - this is the culmination of that. Expelled for professing an opinion??
Some people see the wave of outrage in unionism over Bobby Storey's funeral as springing from arrogance. I don't agree. I think that insecurity is a more likely source...
After police reject bid to halt investigation,
@trevorbirney
