Interesting! Something similar happens with Spanish, where Argentinians use “vos” as the informal second person (instead of “tu”, used as far as I can tell everywhere else), but it sounds very formal to people from Spain, where it used to be used to address nobles (vosa Magestad)

Have you heard about Boolos' dissertation defense? Putnam (his advisor) asked about the relationship between his thesis and the rest of philosophy, and Boolos' answer was the same as the one you report. Or at least so I've been told. What you say makes me doubt both stories.

Oh, interesting. 2 seconds of googling doesn’t turn out anything. A lifetime ago I wrote a book (in Spanish) on informal fallacies, and the main line running through it is that, to a first approximation, there aren’t any. But “begging the question” is the worst by a lot.
