The reason for this (as in how we got here) is pretty simple: for over a generation, Evangelical churches said the opposite. A vote was a clear endorsement and reflection on your own character as much as the candidates’. It’s telling that this narrative has shifted when it has.

To be fair, Cost of Discipleship is far closer to Campbell than Metaxas. The latter kinda hijacked Bonhoeffer to back a theology that is the antithesis of CoD. Though admittedly, I’ve not yet read Campbell’s latest & I’m no Bonhoeffer expert.
