I have news! When 10 Pillars came out on Audible I got lots of lovely emails asking for a print version. So...
@AllenAndUnwinUK
will be bringing it out on 25th August! Same content & fab interviewees but now with worksheets & tools. You can pre-order at:
Attacked in the pool this morning for overtaking a fragile male ego. Grabbed my feet and held me underwater. Then starts yelling. Lifeguards lovely but of course it is me that has to leave as I can’t risk swimming with an aggressive man far stronger than I.
Thanks to the support and encouragement of everyone on here I reported pool grabbing man to the Met police this morning - and they phoned within an hour to arrange a statement. Very impressed.
@katehelencarter
Thanks. They are going to get the cctv of it for me. But the guy admitted it - said how else was he supposed to communicate with me when I didn’t stop swimming. I was doing a timed set in the fast lane. Hate safe spaces becoming scary ones.
Overtook a family running at Parkrun this morning. The littlest one said: “Daddy, I know we are near the back but I think we are doing brilliantly.” So so cool to hear.
This is so frustrating. A global health pandemic, obesity increase risks, and we put up barriers to exercise. The alternative route for runners & cyclists is along the A4.
Returned to the pool. Shaking. Swam my set. But realised I was holding back so as not to risk upsetting anyone. Hate that we end up modifying our behaviour through fear.
Can't even start to reply to all the lovely support from you guys today but so so appreciated to be reassured that what happened was not ok. Thank you to the men calling out despicable behaviour. So sorry to the other women with similar stories to share.
Today’s

tip. Grab your gels, some white stickers and a pen. Ask those who matter to you to write a message. Really nice to read at tough moments.
Exercise isn’t for ‘running off food’. Exercise has many many benefits but every time we connect it to food we make it feel negative and like a punishment.
Looked up some of
@EmmaRaducanu
quotes for a radio interview this morning. So much good stuff: no comparing, self-trust, controlling the controllables, process driven, big picture perspective and gratitude. 🤩
Love using an emotional wheel with clients. We get really lazy and use just a few words to describe our feelings (and so don't have good coping mechanisms to handle) using words from the outside of the wheel means we can be more specific and better able to find a helpful solution
A mumsnet thread on a parent wondering if it is ok to let her ‘elite athlete’ daughter miss training for a party. The child is 8!! No 8 year old is elite. And even the few who make it to elite level need fun and friends as much as sport and training.
Can we channel all our energy reserves and determination and love of running and send it over the sea to Tennessee to

A (cheating evil) boyfriend told me I wasn’t capable of triathlon. A year later (after finally dumping him) I got a bronze medal at the world champs and he was asked to hand over his GB flag so I could go on stage to get my medal. Full on karma. 😀
If you have extra time during lockdown and want to expand your knowledge of sport, exercise or psychology I've hunted down some completely free courses you can take...

Me: I'm completely over marathon running. My body is not strong enough. Gonna get good at 5ks instead. Also Me: Oh look London Marathon ballot opening - enters. Sometimes you need less motivation and more realism!
Mike Dean the mastermind caddie! 🎉
The Premier League referee, who also caddies on the Ladies European Tour, celebrates a hole-in-one for Whitney Hillier at the Estrella Damn Mediterranean Ladies Open.
Athletes / sporty peeps: if i put on a free zoom session of ‘psych tools you can learn to stay mentally fit over lockdown’ would there be any interest?
Why do we make this so complicated? Eat tonnes of fruit and veg. Exercise every day. Drink lots of water. Sleep loads. Have a purpose. Spend time with lovely people. Use gratitude. That is what will bring good health.
Look at all her rivals cheering her on and showing such support. 😍 Sport doesn’t have to be about beating others. The original definition of competition was ‘to strive after together’
Ran a workshop tonight where the girls had to explain what was brilliant about each of their team mates. Everyone’s faces lit up and they left with at least 3 of their strengths highlighted. Everyone needs to hear they are awesome occasionally.
If a goal for 2022 is to up your CPD or to explore the science behind sport and exercise more here are 27 free courses you can take in sport, psychology, coaching or mental health.
A few weeks ago a pervy man in a car on a quiet road was yelling at me. Today, same car, same man shouting again. Ran round corner straight into a policeman. He went to have word for me. 😀
Survived train, found out I won my age group at the triathlon on Saturday and the owner of our holiday accommodation asked for a selfie as he is currently listening to 10 Pillars of Success. 😍 Feel like I have won Monday.
If I ran the free ‘10 tools for building mental fitness over lockdown’ workshop again in the next week or so would anyone find it helpful?

A message to gym instructors - please don’t finish classes by getting people to check how many calories they have burnt. It implies that exercise is about becoming less of yourself rather than more.
My race wasn’t great (asthma) but oh my
@LondonMarathon
reminds you why London is the best city in the world. The support & cheers & high fives & jelly babies are out of this world. Felt so so proud to call this city home.
A Level results day is the annual reminder that when all the way back in 1995 when ITV News were looking for a student to highlight that not everyone does well they filmed me. Sitting on the curb. Sobbing.
Lady walks up to my daughter and I in a cafe, looks at her plate and tells her “that is a lot of food for a little girl”. It is never ok to judge another’s food - or to express that - but to try to food shame a 4 year old… 😖😖😖
After working on a piece around ego in sport yesterday spent most of today’s Parkrun running with a guy who cut all the corners. The psych side of me was dying to ask why him why. I genuinely don’t see why you would cheat at Parkrun?
So so chuffed to have been awarded chartered sport psychologist status. It has taken 5 years (which includes hundreds of reflections, 4 case studies, 3 research projects, 2 MSCs & 1 Baby)! Thanks to
@TimHolderPsych
for mentoring
@Paulperrytri
for calming!
May I be chancellor next? I'd have free school meals for all kids. A risk assessment of mental health impact on every policy and 95% tax levels for those who swim too slow in the fast lane. 😉
The goal was to thank at least 3 marshals a km and smile the whole way round. Achieved - and got a post injury PB. Gratitude is an awesome sporting strategy.
Not advertising that having a sports psych definitely improves performance... but little one took nearly 10 minutes off her parkrun PB with me (instead of hubby) today... we used chunking (run to the next marshall), distraction (spotting blue cones) and bribery (cake obvs).
Little one just asked: why do you always go for a run? Replied: Makes me a nicer mummy, makes me cleverer, more creative, less grumpy and i get to make friends. Realised I’d summarised my 35,000 word (psychology of exercise) book in a sentence!
This just arrived! While it was my slowest ever marathon I think maybe the one I’m proudest of. My goal was to cheer every other runner I spotted and to arrive home smiling. Achieved both. Thank you
@LondonMarathon
for helping us push ourselves.
Saw my cardiologist. Mentioned their ‘how to get here info’ didn’t mention riding routes or bike parking & he took me in to see clinic manager who is now going to update it. Hurrah.

Been a while before I could use a race to show a great sports psych tactic. Here is my confidence booster for Sunday’s triathlon. These are great to create a few days before a race to remind you of what is important and how hard you’ve worked.
Really frustrating to see our local

Will never forget the stat I heard studying psychology of injury: 70% of us don’t do our physio exercises. After 2 days of mine can see why! Going to pull out all the psych tools to stick with it: goal setting, accountability, treats (basically self-bribery) & habit building.
As the start of triathlon. Little one dancing away being adorable. Reflecting on just how lucky I am - and abusive ex-boyfriend walks past. Perfect karma. To anyone feeling trapped - if they tell you you can’t do better - you can. And you deserve that happiness.
Fab stat just found for my exercise psych book: the children of parents who both exercise are 5.8 times more likely to be active than those who don’t. We really can be amazing role models.
When your publisher messages you to say there is nothing more to do on your manuscript and it is off to the technical people to make it into a book. 😍😍🤩🤩😀👍🏼 Just put some Pinot Grigio into the fridge! 📚

Totally agree with the outcome here - but the language is incredibly confusing so no wonder the policies have been mangled to date. Female is sex based. Woman is gender. So female transgender athletes would be ftm & there’s not a women’s category but ‘female’ and ‘open’.
Bus to school with my 5 year old today. Man gets on, sits next to her and starts stroking her head. I freak. Yell at him to stop. He carries on. I yell again and we move. Discover later he is known for this. Why is this tolerated? Heartbreaking at 5 she's not safe from creeps.
Loving the irony that the nursery manager just emailed all 100+ parents to tell us due to GDPR we are banned from taking photos at Christmas party - but forgot to use bcc & so shared everyone’s details!
If you are looking to do some learning for personal development in 2021 here is the most popular blog post I've ever written: Free courses in sport and psychology:
So for 7 hours tomorrow we are completely blocked in by
@RideLondon
and I can’t think of anything better. Roads being overrun by cyclists is fantastic. Hope everyone has an awesome ride. We will be cheering at Hogarth Roundabout.
Interesting response mix: sportsmanship or stupid to wait? Do you need a win by all means mentality to be a pro or is winning in the right way most important?
“Mummy I can’t sleep - I have sparkles in my foot”. An investigation has discovered she meant pins and needles. But they shall now be forever known as ‘sparkles’ 😍😍😍✨✨✨
The joy of a call asking for me to give at least 3 hours work towards a PR project for a £350million company and when I ask the fee get told: oh we don’t pay. Well you should. That is absolutely disgraceful.
Stayed on my bike, made it to the finish line, got hugs from my little one (yuck mummy you’re all wet!) and came 4th lady with a time I’m dead proud off. Pretty good morning!

This is what I think makes Andy Murray great - focusing on the input rather than the output gives you a mastery mindset so you never stop learning, improving & can find pride in every performance.
My usual Tuesday morning involves wrestling a 1 year old into nursery clothes. Today was a little bit different. And lots of fun. Thanks
@BBCBreakfast
A sport psych today on here mentioned that it can be hard to find good quality, cost effective CPD courses. So I asked my sport psych colleagues and put together a list of the places we love to get training from.
Last year I interviewed a lady in her late 80s for a happiness project. She now emails me monthly with what cool activities she's been up to and has a magical ability to send them at just the moment I'm most in need of some perspective. We need more of these people in the world.
Really excited to be talking at this event. Will be offering up 10 Sports Psych tools to help you be a more successful coach - it is free and online on June 7th.
When we focus on all the brilliant benefits of exercise we get fitter and healthier. When we focus on burning off calories it feels like a punishment. Gyms need some exercise psychologists in the marketing team.
Her goal? Or her dad’s? We need to let kids be kids - training 7 days a week to run a 2:48 marathon at 12 is asking for all sorts of mental misery in the future. “She's 12. She runs an under-3-hour marathon. And she's prepping for the 2028 Olympics”
