My new essay in @nybooks argues that sustained, transideological Dem partisanship is essential. 'The Meaning of Partisanship' by Jonathan White and @lea_ypi --a brilliant book--clarified my thinking.

Perhaps the most powerful element of Biden's speech is the unspoken message to the Republican Party that the era of Democratic cowering is over. That is a very important step in the termination of an abusive relationship.

However the Biden crisis ends, it should be beyond dispute that the Democratic Party needs to be reimagined, restaffed, and rebuilt as a party whose #1 goal is to defeat (and not appease) a Republican Party that is extraordinarily weak, unpopular, and dangerous.

New York City has millions of fired-up partisans from across the ideological spectrum, waiting for a NY leader of integrity and purpose to get behind. Hochul would seem no have conception of, or interest in, their existence or their strength of feeling. They are *in her way.*

Another way to view this: if Dems locked up the political loyalty of under 45s, GOP would very soon have nowhere to run. Extraordinary that this isn't a priority.

I’d be less condescending to young voters if I were you. 18-29 year olds are the reason Biden is president. They made up 17% of the electorate.

As the GOP's push to one-party rule intensifies, there seems no escaping the conclusion that a number of senior Democrats, disoriented and traumatized by years of compromise and defeat, need to stand down in favor of new faces who are ready and able to do partisan battle.

Every indication that the media is preparing to celebrate, explicitly or tacitly, an authoritarian Trump term. The concept of the Fourth Estate feels like it's about to collapse. All the J-school homiliies, all the Press Correspondents Dinners, all the Tocqueville quotes...

How does this work in practice? 1. You adopt a master narrative: "the Republican Party has gone crazy & extreme. At all costs vote D" 2. You verify the narrative with the torrent of batshit stuff that comes out every day 3. You mercilessly repeat the narrative.
