Fio:
Lisbon drivers will look you right in the eye while you're crossing the street on a pedestrian crossing and just straight out hit the gas. It's that stone cold "today I just really feel like killing someone" face that sends shivers down my spine.
Things about the Portuguese climate that are hard to explain to anyone not familiar with it: inside my department it's so cold that you need to wear a winter coat. Meanwhile, some 10 km from here, my gf is sunbathing at the beach in her bikini. The only difference? The sun.
Spain is already having a major wildfire - and it’s just March. Of course the public have little idea of what is happening to us because the media can’t see past Donald Trump, Boris Johnson or Gwyneth Paltrow’s skiing trip. Brace yourself for 2023

"You apparently know so much about Portuguese law, but you don't even now you need to take a copy with you", e deu-me a

Corona story from a friend here in Lisbon: he had contact with an infected friend of his. The next day, the national health service called, told him to stay at home and report on his physical state daily though an online questionnaire for two weeks. He forgot to fill it out 1/
once, was immediately called and reminded to fill it out. His infected friend didn't have anyone to walk her dog or get groceries, so the municipality sent volunteers to do it for her. Seriously, if this level of efficiency is possible in Portugal, why not in the Netherlands? 2/2
The written law says pedestrians have priority on pedestrian crossings. The unwritten law says that priority is a favor that generous drivers who are so inclined bestow upon the lowly pedestrian. But if they aren't so inclined, and you dare claim your priority, you're dead meat.
A homeless person found themselves an iglo to sleep in. So what do the police do? They destroy the iglo with the person still in it. And then they complain that people criticize the police 🤦🏻♂️.

You have those in Lisbon too. I call it 'mobility-washing', just paint a couple of bike symbols and a 30 km/h sign with no capacity to enforce any of that and call it a bike street.
In Portugal, you have to pay to defend your PhD thesis (€350 in my case), even when you are on a scholarship. Is this normal in other countries? It feels like a penalty for achievement.

set up a relocation service, Lisbon is the new agreed upon best place ever. So I came to check it out.

You don't think Southern Europeans have those problems too? For example, in Portugal the minimum wage is €600 and many people work 60 hours a week. And even then they don't go online to insult other countries.
I really wish Portuguese distinguished the contrast between open and closed vowels, one of the hardest things for non-natives to learn, through its orthography. Like in the IPA, the open vowels could be written as ɛ and ɔ and the closed ones as e and o. Take for instance the >

Happy to announce that I got funding from the Portuguese government for my PhD project on coalitional politics in presidential systems, focusing on Indonesia as a case study. I waited for a long time (like the other applicants) but now the agony is finally over!

At the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815-1830), there were two major dividing lines: one religious, the other linguistic. When Belgium seceded, NL was left with the religious divide and BE with the linguistic one. The former was resolved but the latter wasn't.

Being back in the Netherlands for a bit reminds me of how dependent you are here on an app called 'rain alarm' to do literally anything outside, even doing groceries. One minute the sun is shining and the next the heavens could very well burst.

This statement says a whole lot. Restoring nature = human extinction, meaning humans aren't part of nature. And that idea is again closely linked to the idea that we are immune to climate change.

Reminds me of the difference between northern and southern Europe when it comes to alcohol. Alcohol is more a part of everyday life in the south, considered part of meals and used casually, while in the north it's something people use to ascend to another dimension.
Súil is the Irish word for 'eye'.
However, at a prehistoric point, the word used to mean 'sun', developing its later meaning through metaphor.
It's part of a big family of 'sun'-words, which also includes Latin sōl, Ancient Greek hḗlios, Russian solnce and Welsh haul.

Couple things worth pointing out here:
- Portuguese and Romanian words for 'I' are both 'eu'.
- Dumneavoastra, with 'dumnea' deriving from Latin dominus, is quite literally the same thing as 'vos senhores', better known, in its contracted form, as 'você'.
Many of the personal pronouns (I, you, etc.) of Romanian will look familiar if you know some Italian, French or Portuguese.
The ones that may be new are the long, polite forms that start with dumnea-.
These aren't too unfamiliar though - they come from Latin dominus 'master'.

Interesting to see that in the Dutch province of Flevoland car ownership is markedly higher than in the rest of the country. That must have something to do with the fact that it was reclaimed from the sea in the 2nd half of the last century and planned in a more car-dependent way

The name of the Portuguese city of Braga is likely etymologically related to the Dutch word 'broek' (pants). The name of the city comes from the Celtic tribe Bracari, which were in turn named after the 'braca', shorts, they wore. That's also the likely origin of the Dutch word.
